Reflections for Year 11Last month brought numerous holidays however, for Year 11 these ‘holidays’ were seen as opportunities to add in some more hours of revision for exams, which are rapidly approaching. The day of revision for Year 11 on the previous timetable Break-in Day was very successful. Many Year 11 students responded enthusiastically to the day, implying that the activities and advice has aided their revision over Easter and confidence about the exams. Moreover, we would like to thank all teachers that have organised and led revision sessions throughout the Easter holidays, at lunch times and after school, giving us their time and support.

Although May will be a time of exams, it will also be a period of farewells to our teachers and friends as we officially leave school on 27 May.. Undoubtedly, there will be tears as memories are shared of our last five years at Notley and we all hope that this month will be productive as well as leaving us with positive memories of our last few weeks at school.

As always, we are grateful for your interest in the latest news of Year 11 and we hope you have enjoyed reading all of our reflections. Now, we wish you all the best and hand over the role of keeping you up to date to the future students. Once again, thank you to all staff and students who encourage and support our learning. Jake Gage, Head Boy and Bethany Mill, Head Girl.

Uniform Donation

Year 11s, are you wondering what to do with your uniform when you leave school? Rather than letting it take up valuable space in your wardrobe, why not donate it back to the school? We are collecting any uniform and PE kit that is clean and in good condition. The uniform will then available to buy from the school office for a nominal fee.

Tesco and Sainsbury’s VouchersWe are still collecting both Tesco and Sainbury’s vouchers for schools. Tesco vouchers have now ended in store, so please bring in any that you may have at home. Sainsbury’s vouchers are available in stores until 31 May 2011 so please keep collecting them and bringing them into school.

Collection boxes for both vouchers can be found in the library.

Zak Farmer 10N has become Essex University ABC’S first Junior Boxing Champion. Zak has only been boxing for 23 months and before entering this huge championship in Hutton, Brentwood on Saturday 7 May he had only

had 4 carded fights, the first two of which he unfortunately lost so ultimately he had only won 2 previous fights before taking on this challenge. As you will see from the write up from his coach (below), he stepped up to the challenge. Zak won on points, scoring 18 to Zak and only 8 to his opponent.

This also makes Zak the first and only ABA championship winner that the University of Essex has ever had.

Zak’s coach writes “14 year old Zak Farmer became Essex University ABC’S first junior boxing champion when he won a decisive point’s verdict over gateway’s L. Shilling at Brentwood on Saturday 7 May.

This is Zak’s first boxing season and with a run of three wins, his confidence was high. Straight from the first bell Farmer went onto the attack using his southpaw stance to confuse his opponent. Connecting with rights and lefts, the Essex University boxer took the first round. Shilling mounted an attack in the second, but Zak kept his hands high and weathered the storm coming back with combinations that backed the Gateway boxer against the ropes. Both boxers rained in punches before Farmer moved out of trouble and connected with a one-two to take the second round. Farmer knew he would have to stay on top and immediately did this landing three and four punch combinations when in close, to take a well-deserved verdict and be crowned the Essex and Essex Metropolitan Junior Class 4 Champion”.

Well done to Zak from all at Notley High School, what a fantastic achievement.

Zak Farmer is a Boxing Champion Friday 10 June – Non-Uniform DayWe are fast approaching our final non-uniform day of this academic year and again, we are fundraising for Little Havens Children’s Hospice. As a school, we have been raising money for this fantastic charity for 8 years and have donated many thousands of pounds to assist in the support of young children, who tragically, will have short lives. The hospice also supports the families of these children by giving them respite care. The medical equipment, expert specialist staff and play facilities combine to give these special children the treatment, comfort, care and attention they deserve.

Student Voice members have already had a visit from the local fundraiser for the hospice and will be taking part in the Essex regional event ‘Brew, Bake and Celebrate’ on the day. The hospice hopes that schools and businesses will take part in this event and raise funds through selling hot drinks and cakes. Please buy some of the delicious cakes Student Voice will be selling at Break and Lunch. www.havenshospices.org.uk/fund_raising/brew-bake-celebrate

So, on Friday 10 June, when students and staff come into school in casual clothes, please make sure £1 is donated for the privilege of not wearing uniform/work clothes. If all staff and students donated £1 each, we should expect to raise money in the region of £1,100. If you can donate more than £1, that would be fantastic.

Bongos Go Off With A Band! The African Drumming Group go to Notley Green

On Tuesday 10 May, the African Drumming Group (Abigail Hart 7O, Holly Everett 7N, Jade Ratoff 7L, Megan Willett 7N, Megan Marsh 7N, Megan Lane 7N, Ryan Kelly 7O, Gregory Mansfield 7N and Isobel Elward 7Y) went to Notley Green Primary School to perform for the students.

The African Drumming Group repeated the performance that they did at the Spring Concert. They were sure they were going to be a success as at the Spring Concert, they received a standing ovation. The thing that drew the most attention was the clacking noise that Ryan Kelly amazingly performed.

The African Drumming Group were right, they did go off with a bang. They performed their piece with no mistakes, thanks to their director, Mrs Green. They made some of the students laugh which was a positive sign. Some of the students were even trying to drum along. They clearly all enjoyed the performance.

None of this would have been possible without their wonderful director, Mrs Green, who is sadly leaving at the end of this term. She will be missed immensely.

It is such a shame that this is their last concert with Mrs Green. Hopefully a willing Year 11 will take over so that they can continue.

Also, special thanks to Mrs Hanna and Mr Harris for making this concert successful.

Student Voice Update

Blue Voice UpdateBlue Voice students have been working on a new initiative over the last term called ‘Student Observers’. Students felt that they would like the opportunity to have some input into the structure and delivery of their own lessons. Students will be focusing on student engagement within the lesson, as well as ‘what helps them to learn’. Several members of staff across a range of subjects volunteered to be a part of this scheme. Observations are currently taking place and will continue to do so during this half-term. So far feedback has been really positive from both students and staff. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of staff and students that have taken part.

Miss Smith

Student observers are a great way to help teachers develop towards being ‘better’ teachers from a student’s point of view. The course was so interesting and the actual taking part was just as great. I find student observers a great way for students and teachers to communicate and help each other to develop skills. It is also a good way to help other students develop their learning so it will help them understand the lesson better and find it easier to take part in. After all the effort preparing for it, it is worth the time and is also useful if you are interested in becoming a teacher.

Rhyse Crook 9B

Green Voice UpdateThis term Green Voice students have been conducted a whole school survey on how everyone travels to school. All surveys are now completed and we are working hard to compile the data so we can see where improvements could be made. A small group of students have also been working to turn an area of donated land into an allotment. We have cleared the area and over the last couple of weeks have built and painted a shed! The

Painting the shed

Preparing the base for the shed

off if you are the last to leave the room.

next task is to build a poly tunnel and some raised beds.

All students are welcome along to gardening club, after school on a Wednesday. Over the next couple of weeks we’ll be spending time in both the allotment and the quads around the school, making sure everything get some much needed tlc.

Green voice students especially want to remind everyone to walk or bike to school where possible, and to turn electrical equipment off, rather than leaving it on stand by!

Jack Petchey Achievement Award Winners – April And MayWe are publishing the names of two winners this month. As Easter break meant we were not in school to choose the April winner, we have pleasure in announcing that Hannah West, 9O, and Steven Dunn, 11H, are the April and May winners respectively.

Hannah has been a member of Braintree Karate club since the age of 6. She has achieved much in her sport since then,

her big achievement having qualified for the England Karate team. Karate is currently not an Olympic sport, so unfortunately Hannah will not be competing in the London 2012 Olympics. However, if funding can be found, it is hoped that karate will be reinstated in time for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Recently, Hannah returned from Portugal with a gold medal, when she had competed against other European countries. Fantastic news Hannah! At Easter Hannah competed in Turkey for the England team; all her costs were paid for by the Turkish karate organisation. However, next month sees Hannah in selections to be picked to go to Malaysia, but she has to fund this trip herself. She needs over £1,000, so if anyone or any organisation would like to contribute, please contact her via the school. Hannah fights in two forms of karate – Shotokan and Tangsodoo, which is a performance karate. As well as training hard herself, she finds time to train beginners in karate on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Hannah is obviously at the top of her game, showing incredible dedication and commitment, not only to herself, but to supporting youngsters too. She wishes her £200 cheque from the Jack Petchey Foundation to be awarded to the Braintree Karate club. Congratulations on your achievements Hannah – and best wishes for your future in the sport.

Steven plays indoor bowls for Falcon Bowls Club in Chelmsford, where he recently won the junior trophy, called The Loible Cup. Due to his talent in bowls, Steven plays in the Division 3 Mens’ League team, helping them win the division and gaining promotion to the next level. Steven has

been playing indoor bowls for five years and began playing outdoor bowls last year. The season for outdoor bowls has just begun and ends in September. Steven has played for the Essex county junior team four times, reaching the semi-finals as an individual. His ambition is to play in the Division 1 Men’s League, which we are sure he will do at his current rate of progress! Steven wishes his £200 cheque from the Jack Petchey Foundation to be sent to Falcon Club’s young junior section, so that children from the ages of 8-13 years can benefit from new woods, club shirts and entry fees to competitions. Congratulations on your successes so far Steven and good luck in achieving your ambition.

We are now using text and email messaging to communicate school news, updates, reminders, events and other important communication. Text and email messaging is a discreet, convenient, secure and reliable method of communication, which will save the school time and money by reducing the burden on

our busy administration team, allowing us to focus on learning.

We understand the importance of working in partnership with the families of our children to ensure that each child receives the best education that the school can offer. Text and email messaging will help us to keep you informed at all times so that together we can offer the best support for your child.

From time to time you will receive a text message or email from the school.

It is important that you please only respond to absence and late messages received via Schoolcomms. For all other messages, please contact the school in the usual way.
