The National Education (NE) Show is an annual event that aims to provide the primary 5 pupils with an experience to immerse the cohort ‘live’ in the full spectacle of the National Day Parade (NDP). This year, there was an added significance to the NE show as it was the last year that the NDP would be held at The Float@Marina Bay.

| SEPTEMBER 2014

Enthusiasm bubbled among the primary 5 pupils as they gathered in the school hall on the afternoon of 19 July. For many of them, it was the first time they had the opportunity to soak in the live atmosphere of an NDP.

The show started at 5.30 p.m. with four lively hosts from Mediacorp entertaining and pumping up the atmosphere with interactive activities, such as doing the Singapore ‘Kallang’ wave and using the various items in the Fun Pack. Some of the highlights of the NE show included the impressive march-past by the different uniform groups as well as the spectacular interjection of the fireworks at different intervals of the show. Many pupils were awestruck as they whipped out their digital devices to capture these magnificent sights. The NE show had definitely evoked a sense of pride and patriotism in the pupils when they stood up to sing the National Anthem and recite the National Pledge.

Besides bringing home the Fun Packs as mementoes, the pupils also took home with them a better understanding of the significance of National Day. The NE show was a memorable experience for our pupils indeed.

RACIAL HARMONY DAY COMMEMORATION 2014

On 21 July each year, schools in Singapore commemorate Racial Harmony Day (RHD) to mark the anniversary of the 1964 racial riots. Since its inception in 1998, RHD has helped to promote inter-racial understanding among our pupils and is an important part of our national education. The learning objectives of the RHD commemoration for the pupils are to:

• Make friends with people of other races and religions. • Learn that in Singapore, people are treated equally regardless of their race and religion.• Appreciate the different cultures that make up Singapore.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the riots. “Harmony from the Heart” was the theme for the commemoration. It served to impart the notion that genuine and sincere harmony stemmed from the common values and aspirations we share, and the ties which bind us together.

Over a span of 3 weeks, our pupils participated in a series of engaging learning experiences planned by the Character & Citizenship Education (CCE) department. The pre-RHD experiences included lessons on Singapore’s pre-independence days and the various cultures of the different ethnic groups. One of the main highlights on the com-memoration day was the construction of a traditional kampong named, ‘The NVPS Kampong’. Pupils were invited to the kampong to participate in traditional games as well as savour traditional food of various races. There was also a photo-taking booth set up to capture our very own NVPS pupils and staff in their traditional costumes. Most staff and pupils were decked in colourful costumes that day and the commemoration peaked with the ‘Best Dressed Traditional Costume’ competition for both pupils and teachers. It was indeed a fun-filled and meaningful learning experience for everyone and we look forward to RHD 2015!

To enthuse and encourage our pupils to become proficient users of their Mother Tongue Languages (MTL) beyond the classroom, the MTL department organised a series of interactive activities for the pupils over a span of 2 weeks right after the June holidays.

Primary 1 and 2 pupils taking the Chinese Language were given the opportunity to purchase a variety of items in a simulated market. Through this practical experience, pupils had the opportunity to learn to communicate effectively in Mandarin with the ‘stall vendors’.

The primary 4 pupils on the other hand participated in the Cultural Amazing Race which comprised the following 6 stations:• Chinese Culture(华族文化)

• Riddles(猜谜语)

• Guess the Word(猜字谜)

• Guess the Chinese Character(猜汉字)

• Tongue Twister(绕口令)

• Guess the Idioms(猜成语)

The pupils collected stamps at the different stations and were rewarded with fabulous prizes upon completing the 6 stations. Besides using the language, they also had the opportunity to learn more about the Chinese culture in these activities.

For the Malay pupils, activities were planned and designed to deepen their knowledge of the Malay language and poetry as well as to under-stand the stories that the different poems depict. Besides introducing pupils to the different forms of Malay poetry, pupils also learnt to create their own poems during lessons. To consolidate their learning, the pupils participated in a quiz on the different types of poetry forms (pantun, sajak, syair and gurindam) in class. These fun and engaging activities have indeed enhanced pupils’ interest in learning their MTL.

PRIMARY ONE AND TWO CHINESE SPEECH AND DRAMA

Using drama to teach language to children is an effective strategy as children learn chiefly by exploring their world using their imagination and engaging in ‘pretend play’. By encouraging self-expression, drama also motivates children to use the language confidently and creatively.

Since Term 2 this year, Speech and Drama lessons have been conducted for primary 1 and 2 pupils taking the Chinese language. This programme aimed to develop our young pupils into confident speakers by creating an interactive environment for them to build up oral skills such as voice projection, articulation of words and appropriate expression in voice.

The pupils learnt simple dramatization, mime and movement. They also picked up rhymes, poetry recitation skills and drama techniques for simple character portrayal over a span of 10 weeks. At the last session, pupils were given a platform to showcase the drama skills they have acquired. They took to the stage with zest and kept the audience enthralled throughout the whole performance.

The Chinese Speech and Drama has definitely helped to cultivate the pupils’ interest and love for the Chinese language and equipped them with listening and speaking skills to be well-versed in Mandarin.

NATIONAL DAY CELEBRATION 2014

‘Our People, Our Home’, this year’s National Day theme, is about celebrating our people who have the will to stand up for our independence and who care for others. It is also about celebrating the achievements of Singa-poreans who have worked together to build Singapore, a conducive home to raise our children, a place where we truly belong.

During the week leading up to the observance of National Day, the pupils had sing-along sessions during pre-assembly periods to rehearse the National Day theme songs that they were going to sing during the National Day celebration. Form teachers also conducted a lesson to explain the significance of National Day.

Everyone was clearly in exuberant spirit on 8 August as pupils and staff arrived in school, donning red shirts and humming the tunes from the National Day theme songs. For the first half of the day, the pupils were taken through by their teachers, the journey of Singapore’s birth to independence in 1965. Throughout the session, the pupils were encouraged to reflect on the hardships and events that the pioneers in Singapore underwent in the pre-independence years, which enabled Singaporeans to enjoy the fruits of what they had laboured today. The pupils then gathered in the hall to witness the Observance ceremony, sing the National anthem and recited the pledge. Mrs Tan shared the National Day message, which reminded all of us to take pride in our country’s accomplishment and at the same time not take them for granted. The National Day celebration ended on a high note as everyone sang their hearts out, the endearing National Day theme songs.

1. Fully developed pupils

2. Fully engaged pupils

3. Fully empathetic pupils

At our school’s Open House which took place on 23 May 2014, the school publicity team provided parents with information that enabled them to realise that North View Primary School is the choice school to enrol their children. The Open House was opened to all parents of K2 children. The programme included visits to respective English, Mathematics and Calligraphy lessons and even CCA sessions; showcasing to our guests the myriad of distinctive learning experiences at North View to engage and develop the whole child.

The programme concluded with a dialogue session with the school leaders and key personnel. Feedback from the parents was encouraging. They found the tour around the school informative and the learning environment vibrant and conducive for learning.

1. GAMES CARNIVAL 2014

“Talent wins games but Teamwork wins championships,” a quote shared by a famous basketball player of all times saw this spirit of teamwork prevalently displayed at the much anticipated Games Carnival held on Monday, 26 May 2014. More than just the fun and sweat pitting at the various parts of the school compound, the event was organised to create a platform for our pupils to apply their skills and knowledge learnt from their Physical Education lessons in a competitive environment. This year’s new format of inter-class competition allowed the pupils to encourage and cheer their classmates on especially when the competitive heat turned up. It also created the opportunity for them to accept each other’s differences and find the best way to play together.

It was a fun-filled day for the pupils as they engaged in various inter-class game competitions such as floor-ball, captain’s ball, Frisbee and handball. The pupils truly put the school’s core values of integrity and resil-ience into action. They learned to play by the rules and many displayed remarkable sportsmanship by giving their best in the games.

At the end of the event, a sense of achievement and camaraderie forged through the participation in the various matches summed up the essence of the carni-val. This invaluable experience reinforced their class-room learning that good teamwork and skills are essential for success. Although some pupils expressed disappointment for not winning or perform-ing to their expectations, most of them went home in high spirits as they renewed their determination to improve their performance in future sports events. Andfor those who were spectators, they were cheering their hearts out for their friends who represented their class in the matches. What an awesome way to wrap up a school’s term!

Into its tenth year now, the annual Mother Tongue Language (MTL) Cultural Camps held at the school are aimed at promoting MTL through creative and engaging programmes. This year’s theme underscores the importance of providing an immersive and vibrant language environment in helping children develop their MTL proficiency.

Primary 3 Malay Language Cultural Camp

This year the Chinese Language Department’s focus for their camp is on the effective use and appreciation of the Chinese Language and culture. Held on 27 May 2014, the non-residential camp started off with the speaker of the day sharing tips with the students on how to captivate their audience with an effective presentation. These included appropriate voice projection and portrayal of feelings. Through role-playing and storytelling activities, pupils learnt techniques to improve fluency, expressive-ness, and intonation. They were given the opportunity to apply their learning by using their voices to depict the different characters in the short stories introduced. To enhance the quality of the language experience, pupils were also taught the art of making the cultural handicraft, Mian Su (面塑), where they were given clay to mould into different interesting characters.

The Chinese Language Cultural Camp had definitely created a memorable learning experience for the Primary 3 students.

For pupils taking the Malay Language, it was also a full-day non-residential camp that exposed them to the different facets of the language and culture, specifically the use of Malay language in daily school life, Malay literature and performing arts. For the first part of the camp, the pupils were introduced to Malay folklore followed by a skit based on the story, ‘Sang Kancil Menipu Buaya’. The characters in the story were portrayed by the pupils. During the second part of the camp, the pupils used the iPad as a tool to help them navigate on a language trail in school. This activity was then followed by a Dikir Barat workshop. The pupils were very engaged throughout the whole camp and had fun learning about the Malay language and culture.

Primary 3 - 5 Tamil Language Cultural Camp

At the Tamil Language Cultural Camp, the pupils from primary 3 to 5 participated in a wide array of activities; they learnt how to play Tamil traditional board games such as “Dhadi” and “Kattam Vilayaattu”. They also had a chance to sample an Indian delicacy called “Vadai”. The language experience was followed by a hands-on activity of making their own “Idiyappam”, commonly known as string hoppers in English. The gratification on the children’s faces when they saw the string hoppers emerging from the dough mould made the teachers’ day.

Another key feature of the camp was puppetry. The objective of this activity was to immerse students in the characters they are portraying and at the same time develop and improve pupils’ fluency, expressive-ness, intonation, and inflection through these role-playing activities. Pupils learnt to use their voice to depict the various animal characters in short stories through appropriate voice projection and portrayal of feelings.

Yet another highlight of the camp was painting the Agal Vilaku (Oil Lamp) which allowed pupils to showcase their aesthetic skills by creating different designs with colours.

Finally, while enjoying a scrumptious vegetarian Indian Banana leaf meal for lunch, the pupils also acquired the knowledge of how food is being served on a banana leaf. Through these various engaging activities, the pupils had not only gained an appreciation for the Tamil Language but also grew more confident in expressing themselves in it. Kudos to the teachers in the Tamil Language Department who designed the camp activities and implemented them themselves!

The NVPS Aesthetics Extravaganza was graced by our Guest-of-Honour, Mrs Rebecca Chew, Principal of the Singapore Teachers’ Academy for the Arts (STAR). In her speech, she reminded the pupils to always dream and strive to achieve for the best. She also engaged the pupils with a lot of her personal stories, inspiring all to continue learning and develop their unique talents in the different domains of development.

The Guzheng Ensemble opened the event with two mesmerizing scores; “Battle Against the Typhoon” and “The Flying Apsaras”. These musical numbers clearly attested to their dexterity as they played through the fast-paced tunes. The Indian Dancers piqued our senses with their energetic dance, entitled “Murathin Sirappu”.

The Chinese Dancers enthralled us with their item, “Daughters of the Grasslands”, flavoured with Mongolian influence. Last but not least, the International Dance group received a rousing applause for their energetic dance item, “We Are A Team”. This futuristic dance featured several gravity defying moves by our very talented dancers.

Besides watching the performances, the pupils were also actively engaged throughout the event. They learnt about the different genres of music, they sang and made music through body percussion. A favourite and high point of the event was when the whole school stood on their feet and danced to the tune of ‘Happy’. Congratulations again to all the performing arts groups for their success!

5. LAUNCH OF THE BOX PROJECT 2014

Feature Stories

NVPS NOTIFICATION9

Since the start of this year, the school has embarked on various programmes to develop the metacognition of our pupils, in particular, their critical thinking capacity. Through a broad based approach, we seek to create opportunities for our pupils to develop the disposition of a well-cultivated critical thinker. With the changing global landscape, there is a necessary demand for schools to develop skillsets such as the ability for critical and creative thinking, the ability for self-directed and collaborative learning, the ability to learn formally and informally, and the ability for both competition and cooperation in our pupils.

The Future Problem Solving, also known as FPS, programme, is one such programme that the school has piloted with our pupils in primary 4 Joy this year. FPS has been an elective module for the Gifted Education Programme pupils in Singapore. During the FPS programme, our pupils in primary 4 Joy were taken through a 6-steps problem solving process and to apply the FPS protocol to an authentic community problem.

In our pupils’ search for a collaboration opportunity, Nee Soon South Community Centre responded and thus making the Box Project possible. So on 14 July 2014, The Box Project was launched at North View Primary School. Our Guest-of-Honour, Dr Lee Bee Wah, Grassroots Advisor to Nee Soon South GROs, our principal, Mrs Evelyn Tan, representatives from P4 Joy and their FPS teachers, Mdm Lyanna Ng, Ms Jasavelle Ting and Ms Vanessa Lee, proudly unveiled the gift boxes, the products of the project.

The beneficiaries of The Box Project were NVPS very own Primary 6 students. The products of the project will come in a series of 3 gift boxes. Each gift box is thematically designed with specially selected items to capture the needs of our primary 6 pupils. With ideas proudly contributed by our primary 4 juniors, these gift boxes will be a channel for the community to address the struggles and needs of primary 6 pupils. More importantly, they intervene at a critical juncture of the pupils’ lives, and have them experience the PSLE as a rite of passage that is supported by many people who believe in them.

1. TEACHER-PARENT-PUPIL CONFERENCE 2014

Feature Stories

NVPS NOTIFICATION10

Most children have two main educators in their lives – their parents and their teachers. Parents are the prime educators until the child attends pre-school or begins formal education. They remain a major influence on their children’s learning throughout school and beyond. A large number of research studies have produced convergent findings that an effective parent-teacher partnership can make a significant difference in a child’s education. The school held a Teacher-Parent-Pupil Conference (TPPC) at the mid-year mark to provide an avenue for parents and teachers to redefine and strengthen their partnership as well as discuss ways to refine pupils’ individual learning plan so as to bring out the best in each pupil.

OUR PARTNERS IN EDUCATION

The TPPC for the primary 1 to 6 was held on 29 May and 30 May 2014. Our school adopted a more structured approach for the conference this time, providing equal opportunities for parents, teachers and pupils to share their feedback and concerns. Parents and pupils were therefore engaged in a meaningful and in-depth discussion with the teachers as they reviewed the pupils’ achievement of their goals and targets set at the beginning of the year. Based on parents’ feedback, the exchange of information during the TPPC was useful in enabling them to render follow-up support for their child’s development and progress. It was heartening to observe the good attendance at the TPPC, as it was a testimony that parents took a great interest in the holistic development of the child.

2. NVPS FAMILY DAY 2014 - ‘WE ARE FAMILY’

Albert Einstein once said, “Rejoice with your family in the beautiful land of life!” There are many sentiments associated with family - fun, laughter, bonding, to name a few. North View Primary School under-stands the importance of family and the great influence it has on our children’s development. At the same time, we also embrace the significance of partnership between school and home. Our children’s development is set primarily at home and in school, and when these two environments are attuned to each other, they benefit the most. With this in mind, the idea of an NVPS Family Day was mooted.

It will be a biennial event with its first held this year on 31 May. The main objective of the event is to create a platform for bonding and the development of relationships amongst pupils, their families and our staff at a deeper level. The theme for this year's NVPS Family Day was 'We Are Family'.

I would like to reiterate the guidelines on Leave of Absence from school and Absence during Assessment as previously communicated to all parents:

The attendance of your children at school is really important on a daily basis as each lesson and unique learning experience designed for the day contribute to the bigger development plan and the learning outcomes that they have to achieve for the year. I would like to emphasize that the school strongly discourages leave of absence during the school term unless there is a critical need for your child to stay at home or leave Singapore.

If your child is sick and is unable to attend school on a particular day, you are required to produce a medical certificate which is to be given to his/her Form Teacher by the next day that your child returns to school.

For special approved cases in which your child needs to leave Singapore, you will be required to declare your child’s travel plan through the Pupil Travel Declaration form that may be obtainable through your child’s Form Teacher. This declaration is to facilitate contact tracing in the event of an emergency.

ABSENCE DURING ASSESSMENTWe would also like to remind you that during assessment days, if your child is sick and is unable to sit for the assessment, a medical certificate must also be given to his/her Form Teacher by the next day that your child returns to school. A letter of excuse would not be accepted.

Make up assessment will only be conducted for English and Mother Tongue Oral.

I thank you for your understanding.

The primary 3 pupils visited The NEWater Visitor Centre while the primary 4 pupils visited the National Museum. The primary 5 and 6 pupils visited the Maritime Experiential Museum and the Asian Civilisation Museum respectively.

The pupils clearly enjoyed the FBL and were enriched with not just the knowledge of the artefacts, their origin and culture, but also developed an appreciation of the accomplishments of our forefathers and how the different civilisations in the past have affected the world we live in today.

It was a refreshing learning experience as pupils were given the opportu-nity to view historical artefacts up-close in the museums.

“I can save water at home and in school by using water wisely. For example, I will turn off the tap when I am rubbing my hands with soap.”

Joven, 3 Faith

“My future trip to museum will be more meaningful as I have learnt to look at artefacts in depth, like the era that the statue was from, and the culture of the civilization. This will help me learn and know more about the past.”

Tan Ching, 6 Faith

“Our forefathers were very determined. They had to endure many hardships when they first migrated to Singapore. However, they did not give up hope and strive to make their lives better, thus creating a better Singapore in the process.”

4. AESTHETICS EXTRAVAGANZA 2014

In celebration of our school’s Performing Arts groups’ outstanding achievements in the recent Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Arts Presentation, with all teams receiving the highest accolade of the Certificate of Distinction, the school organized an inaugural NVPS Aesthetics Extravaganza on 4 July 2014 for all the pupils to enjoy the winning performances. Members from the different Performing Arts groups i.e. the Indian Dance, Chinese Dance, International Dance and Guzheng Ensemble showcased their talents on stage.

In addition to affirming and acknowledging these pupils and their teachers’ achievements and commendable hardwork, this event also served to highlight how members of the performing groups have developed their char-acter through their involvement in their respective co-curricular activities (CCAs).
