ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

We are fortunate to provide an outstanding Indonesian program at the school and both students and staff are learning more about the language and culture of one of our closest neighbours. The six children who participated in the State-wide Indonesian competition had an enjoyable experience with three students progressing to the finals. I would like to thank Ms Alex Douros for providing this opportunity for our students. Don’t forget that you can join the Indonesian classes for parents on Monday mornings in the Stadium – selamat pagi! We have had an excellent response to our Book Fair which has been set up in the Library throughout the week. Tomorrow is the final day and thank you to all staff who set up and ran the Fair and all parents who assisted. Remember to return all Fun Run money to the school by tomorrow. At this stage we have raised in excess of $3ooo which will go towards the installation of a fitness circuit along the lower perimeter of the school oval as a part of our

Learnscapes initiative.

EDUCATION MAINTENANCE ALLOWANCE

Do you have a valid Health Care Card, Pension Card or are a Foster Parent, then you may

be eligible to apply for the Education Maintenance Allowance.

If you lodged your form at the start of 2014 and are still eligible, your instalment will be automatically processed and it will not be necessary for you to complete a new form. If you have received a new Card recently, we request that you bring this to the Office so we can photocopy and advise the Department of your new expiry date.

If you have RECENTLY become the Holder of one of these Cards and would like to apply for the EMA, then you can obtain an Application form at the Office. It will be necessary for the school to photocopy your card when the Application form is processed.

Applications must be lodged at the school by the 1st August 2014

WALK SAFELY TO SCHOOL DAY, Friday 23RD May Walk to School Day is an annual, national event when all Primary School children are encouraged to walk safely to school. It is a Community Event seeking to promote Road Safely, Health, Public Transport and the Environment. Regular exercise like walking with your child not only helps you and your child to beat chronic problems like obesity, heart disease, behavioural and mental health issues. It also gives you a great opportunity to teach your child safe ways to behave around roads and traffic. Designated meeting places have been arranged so teachers, parents/carers and students can walk to school together. Please meet at your chosen point at 8.25 am to start walking at 8.30 am promptly. For those who have to drive, we are asking you to leave the car a reasonable distance from the school and walk the rest of the way. Students who have walked to school, may collect a piece of fruit from the Junior School Council outside the hall. Thank you to the PFA for providing the fruit.

INDONESIAN NEWS Berita Bahasa Indonesia! Sayembara Lisan – Indonesian Language Competition Congratulations to three of our Years 5 & 6 students who have made it through to the state finals! We wish Roan, Nicki and Camilia all the very best for this Saturday’s Competition. Interesting Fact #3 Did you know that there is a very smelly flower called the Rafflesia that is found in the rainforests of Indonesia? It smells 100 times worse than rotten eggs and 1000 times worse than smelly socks! If you stretch your arms out to the side, the Rafflesia flower is as big as that! Now that’s BIG! FROM THE HEALTH CENTRE Headlice

Please take the time to read the attached information provided in this week’s newsletter re Headlice. There appears to be quite a few new cases of head lice and I ask that you take the time to look and treat your child accordingly so we can hopefully eliminate these. Strategies such as tying long hair up in pony tails or plaits and regular home checking with the comb and conditioner method described in the information attached are effective in minimising the spread of headlice. If you want any further information or advice, please ring Julie in the Health Centre.

PARENTS & FRIENDS ‘NEWS’ Second Hand Uniform Sale A second hand uniform stall will be held next Tuesday 27th May in the stadium from 8:30 am until 9:15 am. If anyone is available to help it would be greatly appreciated. In addition to the usual donated and unclaimed secondhand uniforms, there will be a limited number of new uniforms for sale at half list price. Once this stock is sold, there will be no more new uniforms for sale from at school. Uniforms will only then be available to purchase from our new supplier, PSW,at 288-290 Stephensons Road, Mt. BASC The program has started it Active After Care Program this term. If you want to have fun while getting fit and learning new skills come along.

Next week the program will be doing the following activities; Paper folding, Active after care, disappearing water, and story reading. On Friday students from Deakin will be coming to the program to do some cool science experiments with the children.

Walk Safely to School Day Friday May 23rd 2014

Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is an annual, national event when all Primary School children are encouraged to walk and commute safely to school. It is a Community Event seeking to promote Road Safety, Health, Public Transport and the Environment. Designated meeting places have been arranged (see below) so teachers, parents/carers and students can walk to school together. Please meet at your chosen point at 8.25 am, to start walking at 8.30 am promptly. For those parents/carers who have to drive, we are asking you to leave the car a reasonable distance from the school and walk the rest of the way. Students who have walked to school may collect a piece of fruit from the Junior School Council outside the hall. Thank you to the PFA for providing the fruit. Walk Safely to School Day asks that we all consider our transport habits and try to incorporate more walking as part of a healthy, active way to get around. And although walking all the way to school isn’t realistic for many of us, it’s quite easy to figure out how you can build a walk into your family’s daily routine. You can teach your child the healthy habit of walking more by:

If you have to drive, park the car a few blocks away from the school and walk the rest of the way. Regular exercise like walking with your child not only helps them (and you!) beat chronic problems like obesity, heart disease, behavioural and mental health issues and diabetes. It also gives you a great opportunity to teach your child safe ways to behave around roads and traffic.

Remember, Active Kids are Healthy Kids.

Just for the Boys Lunchtime Dance

A Lunchtime Dance class will be offered later this term exclusively for boys. They will learn dance warm ups, create their own movements and learn a dance routine inspired by martial arts. The class will be offered to boys from Years 1 - 6. This program is a great way to get boys involved and interested in dance. The cost for this program is $35 for 6 half an hour sessions. The classes will run at lunchtimes in the hall on Mondays and Wednesdays. The first class will be on Wednesday 11

th June and the final session will be the first Monday back in

Term 3, Monday 14th

July. On Monday 14th

July the boys will perform their routine at assembly. If you would like your child to participate in this activity, please obtain a registration form from the school office or visit creativedanceanddrama.com and request a form via the contact page.
