Line is an element of art that is the path
of a moving point through space.
Artists use line to lead your eyes through a
work of art. When you see a line, your eyes usually follow its movement.

There are lines all around us.
Eddward Hopper. Early Sunday Morning, and The NightHawks Cave. 1930. Oil on canvas. Strong horizontal lines create a sense of calm on this empty street. As you look at this painting, you get the feeling that
everyone is sleeping peacefully.
Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959). Falling Water(Kaufmann House), 1936. Bear Run,
Pennsylvania. He used construction materials that blend well with nature.
1.Vertical lines move straight up and down. They do not lean at all. A vertical
line is perpendicular to the top and bottom of the page.
2. Horizontal lines are parallel to the horizon. The red line is the
horizon.
3. Diagonal lines slant either direction.
5 Basic Kinds of Lines

4. Curved lines change direction gradually.
5. Zigzag lines are made from connected diagonal lines that change direction suddenly.

STRUCTURE LINES Structural lines are the lines that hold a design together.

Implied Lines
Implied lines are lines that are not there, that our mind can create.
In Matisse's The Desert Harmony in Red - he played with the notion of implied line by leaving out
the edges of the table.

Sketch Lines Sketch lines can be drawn veryquickly, but they sometimes have a finished
appearance.
Try doing a quick sketch of something small like a persons eye.
