St. James Catholic Church Seguin, TX March 13, 2016
Notes from the Pastor
Congratulations to the St. James School elementary
students on winning 1st place and the middle school
students placing 3rd in the PSIA Competition on March 5,
2016. Thanks to all the teachers and staff for their dedica-
tion and commitment in making the PSIA Competition a
great experience.
—————————————————–————
During the month of March, I ask that every parishioner,
family and organization focus on “To bear wrongs
patiently, to forgive injuries.” Ephesians 4:31-32 says “Let
all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander
be put away from you, with all malice and be kind to one
another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in
Christ forgave you.” We can be less critical of others, offer
positive comments, let go of grudges, overlook minor
flaws and mistakes, pray for those who have wronged us.
Please see the “Mercy Minute” on page 5 of this bulletin.

I will be helping with the Men’s ACTS retreat at
Cathedral Oaks near Hallettsville. This is a great Lenten
opportunity for men to grow in their Catholic Faith with
other men. There is still room available. Registration
forms are available at the parish office and scholarships are
available. Retreat is March 31-April 3, 2016.

Mark your calendar: Holy Thursday Adoration on
March 24th. I would like the following groups to be
present for the following hours of adoration in the hall:
Youth 8:30-9:30; St Ann’s and Catholic Daughters 9:30
-10:30; Knights of Columbus, ACTS Men and Women
and Adoration Adorers 10:30-Midnight. ———————————————————————
Please continue to read Rediscovering Jesus. March 13th
through 20th are chapter 33 to 40. Continue to read one
chapter a day and grow with the book.
—————————————————————
We are planning a parish picture directory. I encourage
every family to be included in this directory. The pastoral
council and youth are helping organize this project. Please
call Ginger Bolton (830) 303-5855.
Mercy This Week
How fitting that the first Sunday Angelus of Pope
Francis, who has made mercy his papacy’s theme,
took place when this Gospel about Jesus’ encounter
with the adulterous woman was proclaimed. “Jesus’
attitude is striking,” Francis declared. “We do not
hear words of scorn or condemnation, only words of
love, of mercy, an invitation to conversion: ‘Neither
do I condemn you’ ” (John 8:11). Francis contin-
ued: “God’s face is the face of a merciful father
who is always patient. Have you thought about
God’s patience, the patience [God] has with each
one of us? That is [God’s] mercy. [God] always has
patience, patience with us . . . understands us . . .
waits for us . . . does not tire of forgiving us”
if we return ‘with a contrite heart” (Pope Francis,
Angelus address, March 17, 2013). Parishes
preparing catechumens may proclaim Jesus’ raising
of Lazarus. Referring to Lazarus, and all those
“raised” from the “death” of sin, Jesus defines the
community’s “mission of mercy”— “Untie him and
let him go” (John 11:44).

Reflection question:
When you put people down by ridiculing their ideas,
their mistakes or their ethnic traditions, do they perhaps
feel that you are casting stones? How can you register
judgment and show respectful mercy when you
disapprove of someone?

Please notice the bulletin board in the narthex (entrance) of the church. This month our parish is focusing on the Spiritual Works of Mercy “Bear Wrongs Patiently” and “Forgive Injuries.” Thank you to St. James School second grade teacher Johann Spencer for creating the March bulletin board.
FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT
Mercy Minute This month we focus our attention on bearing wrongs patiently and forgiving injuries. These Works of Mercy may be the most difficult to live. Here are a few
ideas to help us be more like Christ, to “Bear Wrongs Patiently” and
to “Forgive All Injuries.”
Read the Book of Psalms, which is filled with moments of bearing wrongs patiently and moments of forgiveness.
With faith in God, accept that there is saving grace in a wrong or injury that we have suffered.
Patience is a virtue and a fruit of the Holy Spirit. Practice making the choice to be patient and to forgive.
In moments of anger, try reciting this short prayer: “O Sacred Heart of Jesus, make my heart like unto Thine.”
Pray for the person whom you feel has wronged or hurt you.

Lent calls us to metanoia. Lent invites us to repent
and change our way of life.
Pope Francis wrote a letter addressing how we
interact with the planet Earth. Perhaps this letter
can lead us to a transformation of mind and heart.
Want to know what the letter really says?
Sr. Linda Gibler, a theology professor, author and
engaging speaker, will
give a clear explanation
and shed light on how our
response may bring us to
deeper conversion to our
Creator God.

ACTS Community: The Seguin ACTS Core team
is the “behind the scenes” support group for every
retreat. Each Core member serves a 3-year term and
each member is instrumental to ensure a retreat experi-
ence is special, not just for the Retreatants, but for the
Team also.
A person is eligible to serve on Core if the person has
been on an adult ACTS Retreat, served on an adults
ACTS team, and displayed leadership abilities with a
servant’s heart.
If you are that person, are willing to put your hat “in
the ring” to be a Core member, want to see retreatants

to see the ACTS ministry continue, we need you!
