It includes the Church Triumphant (the saints and angels in heaven) and the Church Suffering (the holy souls in purgatory). As a family we can help each other on our pilgrimage of faith. We do so by “offering up” works of charity, offering up inconveniences and sufferings, praying for one another, and finally, almsgiving. Through these small gestures we offer ourselves for those in need. ***************************************************** BAPTISM SEMINAR - Our next pre-Baptism Seminar will be held on Thursday, July 19th at 7:30 pm in the Rectory. Parents planning to have a baby baptized within the next few months must attend this seminar. Godparents are also invited but do not have to attend. REBORN IN CHRIST - Elijah David Hawkinberry was baptized in our parish this past week. We rejoice with his parents and thank God for the gift of new life in our midst. He was a faithful instrument of God who desired to decrease so that the power and love of Jesus at work in the lives of his people could increase. Since Christ has already come into the world we can’t be his forerunners, but we can prepare the way for him to enter into the hearts and lives of others. The witness of our prayer, the example of our lives and the encouragement of our words for others can turn their hearts to greater trust in God and his grace at work for them. THE NATIVITY OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST

CHRISTMAS IN JULY: In recent years our par ish has

celebrated “Christmas in July” with special gifts for our nursing

home parishioners and the homeless. Beginning next month there

will be baskets at the doors of the church to accept your gifts of

new t-shirts (sizes L, XL and XXL) for men and men’s (L,XL and

XXL) and women’s (M, L and XL) underwear. We also need

individual packs of tissues, body wash (medium size) and

shampoo (medium size) for men and women. Thank you for

getting into the Christmas spirit in July!

LADIES OF CHARITY AND COOKIES! Our Ladies of

Charity will be attending the Ladies of Charity National

Conference that will be held in Pittsburgh in September. We are

looking for anyone in the parish who loves to bake and would like

to contribute their favorite cookies to the “cookie table” at the

conference. They would be due September 19th. Call the Social

Ministry office if you can help!

ADDITIONAL LADIES OF CHARITY NEWS: Our next

trip to Bethlehem Haven is Monday, July 2nd and our next

meeting is Thursday, July 5th and we will be making sandwiches

for Shepherd’s Heart after the meeting. Cookies needed!

CONNECTING WITH OUR HOMEBOUND AND

NURSING HOME PARISHIONERS: As St. Sylvester ’s

works with our new group to strengthen our parish we want to

make sure that all our older parishioners are connected to the

parish. If you know of a parishioner who has not been able to get

to Mass because of illness or age please let the Rectory office

know and we can reach out to them. In addition, if you know of a

parishioner who is now in a nursing home or assisted living

facility and they are not already receiving a visit from our Ladies

of Charity, please let us know that as well. Thanks

BEGINNING EXPERIENCE IN PITTSBURGH: Beginning

Experience is a program intended to help widowed, divorced or

separated women and men who would like to pass through the

grief of these experiences and move forward with their lives.

There will be a Saturday Seminar on July 14th from 9AM-4PM at

the Martina Spiritual Renewal Center in West View, 15229. Cost

is $20 and includes lunch and all materials. Register on line by

SOCIAL MINISTRY INFO: June 2018 marks the third

anniversary of Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’in which he

called on all of humanity to change how we care for the Earth, our

“common home”. He urges all of us to Reduce, Reuse and

Recycle. Check out the organization Catholic Climate Covenant

to find out how others are marking the 3rd anniversary of this

encyclical and ways you can care for the Earth.

BE A HERO AND DONATE BLOOD: Summer is a cr itical

time for blood donations. And it is easy to donate. The Central

Blood Bank has a donation center in the Manor Building just

down the street at 4701 Baptist Rd. Call 1-866-366-6771 to make

an appointment. ***************************************************** WITH SYMPATHY AND PRAYERS - Joan Saldutte was

buried from our parish this past week. We express our deepest

sympathy to her family and offer them our prayers.

MEN’S FELLOWSHIP - We invite more men to join us for

prayer on Saturday morning after the 8:00am Mass. You need not

commit for every week but we ask you to try joining us for Lauds,

the morning prayer of the universal Church. For more

ST. SYLVESTER SCHOOL NEWS New families interested in discovering what St. Sylvester

School has to offer in PreK through 8th grade should call for

who have purchased a Lancer Loot Calendar Raffle ticket 6

pack! Regularly $5 a month, if you buy the July through

December 6 pack of tickets you save $5. You can select a single

number for the 6 months or ask for a random 6 pack (different

number each month). The cost will be 6@$25 until June 30,

2018. July only Lancer Loot Calendar Raffle tickets are available at

$5 each until June 30 also. Purchase at the rectory, call school

( 412-882-9900 ) or stop at the SCRIP table after all of the

week-end Masses.

GOLDEN WEDDING CELEBRATION - The Diocese of

Pittsburgh is once again planning its Golden Wedding

Celebration for couples celebrating their 50th wedding

anniversary this year. A special Mass will be celebrated by

Bishop Zubik on Sunday, October 7, at 2:30 PM at St. Paul

Cathedral. A light reception will follow in the Cathedral hall.

All couples celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary any

time this year and wishing to receive an invitation to this event

should call the rectory or drop a note in the collection basket

no later than Sunday, August 5.

DIOCESAN ABUSE HOTLINE

In the continuing effort to reach out to anyone

abused in the church, our diocesan church has a

who may have been abused to call for support and

healing.

FESTIVAL - AUGUST 20-25 SET-UP - Volunteers are needed for set-up on

drop all donations off at the rectory. BASKET OF CHEER - We are collecting Liquor only,

for our Basket of Cheer. We have reached our

quoted of wine thanks to those who have already

made many donations. Donations may be dropped

off at the Rectory. DO YOU KNOW OF A TALENTED SINGER OR

MUSICAL GROUP? We are currently scheduling

Entertainment for the festival. This is a great way

for hundreds of people to hear your music. Please

call the rectory for details. FLEA MARKET - Items will be accepted for our Flea

Market beginning Monday, June 18th. Please bring

all donated goods to the Willock Rd. entrance of the

Church Hall. The outside doors are open 24 hours.

We do not accept tires, mattresses, clothing, TV’s,

monitors, computers or stuffed animals.
