Acoustic Sand detection, Sand management and Corrosion/Erosion monitoring

Abstract

Acoustic sand monitoring is essential to keep sand production under control. Compared to intrusive type erosion probes, acoustic sand monitors will give an instant real-time reading of sand production. The sensitivity is also much greater then what erosion probes can achieve.

Another benefit is that being non-intrusive there is no risk involved and the instruments are more or less maintenance free.

ClampOn has manufactured and installed over 10 000 instruments worldwide, we have never stopped developing our technology and are now supplying our fourth generation instruments which are superior when it comes to filtering capabilities and accuracy.

In addition to being an instrument manufacturer, ClampOn also provide best in class sand management. We are remotely monitoring more than 700 wells worldwide, and provide the

operators with daily to monthly reports, which consist of details of sand production, advice on well operation, etc. We have more than 10 support engineers working on different assets on daily basis and 15 service engineers on schedule for onshore and offshore operations.

As a supplement to our acoustic sand detector, our non-intrusive CEM (Corrosion-Erosion Monitor) can be installed to continually monitor the wall thickens off the pipe.

This presentation will give an insight to:

- Sand detector working principle

- History and development

- How the instrument best can be utilized

- Challenges and solutions

ClampOn DSP Well Collision Detector

Abstract

The DSP Well Collision Detector is designed to prevent collisions involving sidetrack drilling within the proximity of existing wells. ClampOn DSP Well Collision Detectors provide operators with real time data so that collision risk analysis calculations are not the only factor

determining the bit’s proximity to existing wells.

ClampOn’s experience with this procedure began at the request of a major operator in the

Gulf of Mexico. The operator was involved in a side track drilling operation which would require the bit to travel in close proximity to existing wells. The operator believed topside sensors could possibly detect the ultrasonic signal generated by the drill string and thus help

to divert a possible collision with an existing well.

The process involves ClampOn DSP Well Collision Detectors being installed topside on all

existing wells in close proximity to the well being drilled. The drill string’s approach to existing wells will create an increase in the ultrasonic signal being observed topside. When

dramatic ultrasonic increases are observed, drilling will be halted and data analyzed. After analysis is complete, the drill string can be diverted or drilling can resume with the confidence that a collision has been avoided or that initial calculations were confirmed.

Glamox lighting solutions for industrial harsh environment and hazardous areas

Abstract

Focus on LED technology, its challenges, advantages and influences on maintenance & environment.

A high quality LED with proper heat management offers significant reductions in installation, operations and maintenance costs, as well as superior light quality. Glamox have combined advantages of the LED technology with application knowledge and installation requirements,

and developed virtually maintenance-free solutions for lighting requirements in oil and Gas industry. Our engineers have designed LED system with new, advanced driver technology,

offering extremely long system lifetime and ease of installation design. The solutions may offer increased maintenance intervals by 5 times or more compared to a conventional

solution. Under optimal conditions the Glamox LED lighting solutions will even last the lifetime of the installation itself. As lighting equipment often is installed in inaccessible places, difficult to reach without scaffolding or industrial climbers the increase in

maintenance intervals means substantial savings in money and manpower. The energy consumption, CO² and NOX emission fee reductions are in a range from 30 up to 80%

compared to conventional lighting.

Furthermore the increased maintenance intervals will reduce the risk of injuries to workers accessing the lighting under difficult conditions.

Markleen – Oil Spill Response – Shaping The Future

Abstract

We all remember reading about the early infamous spill incidents of the Torrey Canyon in 1967 or the Amoco Cadiz in 1978, with the former being set alight by the Royal Airforce

using petroleum jelly! The oil spill response industry was born and grew rapidly in reaction to these incidents. For the first time, dedicated equipment was designed for the two key

aspects of spill control: containment & recovery. Oil booms were first seen following the Torrey Canyon spill. Typically, these were constructed using inflatable cylinders which kept the oil barrier floating. They had a short length of material hanging from the underside called

a skirt which limited the oil from escaping underneath the barrier, normally held down by a ballast chain, with the main material being anything available to hand! The first skimmers

developed were rotating disc skimmers where the oil “stuck” to the surface of the disc and was removed by scrapers, then pumped away to a ship's tank or similar device for temporary storage using primitive pumps prone to blocking & cavitation. Today, we use the same basic

principles that were developed back then; we still do our best to contain and recover using booms and skimmers, but there are some things that have changed.

Materials used for manufacturing booms and skimmers have improved over the years. Markleen now manufacture booms from alloy material which is a special mix of a number of base materials, producing a hybrid that gives excellent properties required for oil

containment booms (resistant to hydrocarbons and ultra violet rays etc) and our skimmers are now made from aluminium and composite materials making them robust, lightweight and

easy to repair. You can see from library pictures that response historically involved many people onsite, people getting very oily, dirty and contaminated, sometimes causing secondary contamination and potential hazards to health. Deployment of equipment also

required extensive man power. People were required to physically get in the water and oil to position the booms and skimmers. Markleen is working with advanced robotics to remove the

human element wherever possible and bring exciting technological advances to the oil spill response sector - a far cry from the rudimentary equipment designed in the early days of the industry. Markleen are focused on the future and have many new advancing technologies on

the drawing board, with which we intend to rejuvenate the entire portfolio of oil spill response equipment we operate today.

The “Flight Simulator” of Drilling. New ways of training drilling crew

Abstract

Drilling crew training programs has traditionally been accredited by IWCF or IADC depending

on the region they operate in. A driller may be certified as driller in a one week training course, and he/she must be re-certified every two years. The drillers certifying program to a large extent is based on the knowledge of the basic well control. This of course is the basic

and has to be part of the “primary school”.

Further, as the advanced automated driller’s chairs with their even more advanced Drilling Control and Data Acquisition systems came on the market, there were needs to train people to operate the new equipment. Over the past two decades these training programs has been

developed to be full scale (replica) of the drill floor and full copy of the machinery software.

However, still we have not learned to “fly the machine” in the context; “from the top of the Derrick to the Drillbit” in a Global virtual environment like the aviation industry is doing. Majority of the Drillers out there does not know how to act if a critical situation is developing

to a potential disaster. They may know in theory, but very few have trained on their particular rig or well.

I would like to share with the audience how Statoil and other major players with more than 1.000 students and 70 different cases are training their offshore teams on their everyday

operational environment.

Reservoir Evaluation and Monitoring

Abstract

An acoustic array installed permanently in a well near the reservoir, can detect smaller seismic activity in the reservoir. The new PRM system, PerForM™, encompassing a data-

acquisition system, a high-capacity digital optical telemetry system and down-hole multi-component acoustic sensor nodes, allows for permanently installing up to 120-level 4C acoustic sensors with 480 individual sensors. The system can be used on its own or be

combined with receivers on the surface.

The industry has been slow to accept PRM systems. However, the modular design of PerForM™ makes it possible to combine the acoustics with other sensors or equipment,

measuring, e.g., pressure, temperature or flow-rate. When a PRM system is combined with measurements that are already accepted, and sometimes required, by well managers, it may improve the cost-efficiency of the combined system and may make acceptance easier.

Unlocking reservoir insight to improve recovery – ‘’A reliable means of achieving Quantified Inflow Distribution by Wireless Reservoir Surveillance’’

Abstract

The high cost and risks of acquiring reservoir surveillance information using conventional technology, such as production logging tools, is forcing operators to manage these fields

without the knowledge of the inflow distribution across the reservoir interval. In addition, permanent reservoir surveillance solutions based on optical or electronic sensors require major modifications of the completion design and installation procedure. Intelligent

chemically based inflow tracer systems developed by RESMAN are an emerging technology that consists of engineered polymers and unique, proprietary chemical compounds that are

combined into a product that resembles strips of plastic. The Intelligent Tracer SystemsTM are designed to react to either oil or water. For example, when water sensitive intelligent tracer

system (RES•H2OTM) is contacted by water, the intelligent tracer system releases its unique chemical ID (inflow tracer) at a prescribed release rate, irrespective of the flowing conditions. The water sensitive intelligent tracer system is dormant when contacted by oil, gas or air.

The oil sensitive intelligent tracer system (RES•OILTM) behaves similarly as the intelligent tracer is released only when it comes in contact with oil. Strips of RESMAN intelligent tracer

system are readily integrated into almost any completion configuration including conventional sand screens, ICD sand screens, multi-stage frac systems, OHGP, pup joints and intelligent completions. RESMAN has reliably provided its technology to dozens of operators worldwide,

as a tool to allow the operators to better understand the dynamics of their assets reservoirs and to better understand how to optimize drainage and ultimate recovery. All of this is done

without additional risk and allows the operators to gain wireless (pseudo) production logging data for several years, thus optimizing the reservoir models and production processes. It also helps support the determination of infill drilling locations. Understanding ‘’what flows

from where, and how much’’.

Integrated reservoir modeling and monitoring, geosteering and uncertainty evaluation as one of the building blocks of Intelligent field

Abstract

The age of "easy to recover" hydrocarbon assets is approaching to its end. Development of complex fields require extensive highly qualified workforce. The degree of technological

complexity as well as safety and environmental risks will rise, and that will in turn require faster decision making and detailed risk assessment. Progressing production decline on existing fields raises the need for more efficient replacement of recoverable reserves. High

capital expenses required for the new fields make operators to reduce the time to first oil. All that makes Intelligent field technologies important for both existing and new assets.

Reservoir modeling is vital part of Intellectual filed concept.

Roxar, member of Emerson group, is a world leader in the automation of upstream processes

and reservoir management systems. The presentation will describe Roxar’s technologies and vision for either whole Intelligent field concept and the role of permanently updated reservoir models in particular. As examples illustrating the effect of using such technologies, we will

describe real-time geosteering and drilling monitoring, uncertainty analyses and risk assessment, integrated monitoring of permanently updated reservoir models.
