New environmental education resources New food waste prevention educational

with several other counties and cities in

the Twin Cities are currently supporting

the national Save the Food campaign to

raise awareness about the problem of food

waste. More than 40 percent of food is

wasted in the U.S., resulting in wasted

energy, fertilizer, cropland and money.

In addition to the resources available from

Save the Food, the county has developed the following

materials to help you educate others about reducing food

waste:

TENANT FEATURE This month we interviewed NorthMarq Capital. They have

been at Northland Center since early 1980’s and are located

on the 5th floor of the 3500 building. Please take a moment

to learn about what they do and how they have enjoyed their

time at Northland Center so far.

What does NorthMarq Capital (NMC) do?

NMC: NorthMarq Capital, the largest privately held

commercial real estate financial intermediary in the U.S.,

provides debt, equity and commercial loan servicing through

its 36 offices nationwide. The company has built long-term

relationships with life companies, CMBS platforms and local,

regional and national banks, with a long track record of

multifamily loan origination through Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae

and FHA/HUD. The company closes commercial real estate

loans on behalf of its customers totaling more than $12.5

billion annually and services a loan portfolio of more than

$50 billion.

NC: How long has NorthMarq Capital been in

business?

NMC: NorthMarq Capital started as Northland Mortgage

Company in St. Paul in1962. During our history, we’ve

acquired more than 10 different firms across the country,

with our most recent acquisition of Amerisphere Multifamily

Finance headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska.

NC: How many employees are located at

Northland Center?

NMC: In Northland Center, we have almost 200 employees

who are primarily loan servicing, corporate management and

administrative personnel. Across the country, we have an

additional 300 employees, bringing our national total to 500

employees.

NC: What made NorthMarq Capital locate to

Northland Center?

NMC: Our sister company is United Properties and at one

point, both firms were owned by the Hamm Family. (Both

are now owned by the Pohlad Companies.) When United

Properties developed this complex, we moved from St.

Paul in the early 80’s to support the occupancy of the new

project.

NC: What types of community involvement

does NorthMarq Capital do/have?

NMC: We support many non-profit organizations, but

focus much of our financial commitments for support of

affordable housing initiatives. We support both Aeon and

CommonBond Communities in the Twin Cities and

support Open Doors, a non-profit arm of the Mortgage

Banking Association. Our employees also organize local

fundraising efforts each month, with the May fundraiser

dedicated to the Animal Humane Society.

In addition, we partner with other Pohlad Companies

annually for a week-long giving event benefitting five local

non-profits: Community Health Charities, Community

Shares of Minnesota, Greater Twin Cities United Way and

Minnesota Environmental Fund. As part of that event, we

celebrate Pohlad Polka Dot Day on August 23, which was

Carl Pohlad’s birthday and recognizes his love for polka

dots and giving back to the community. The company

donates $10 dollars to the Federated Funds for each

employee who wears Polka Dots that day.

NC: Any other interesting facts or information

would you like to share about your company?

NMC: Since the Pohlad Companies own us, we named all

of our conference rooms to honor retired Minnesota

Twins players – including Harmon Killebrew, Kirby Puckett

and Tony Oliva.
