Priceless MemoriesAs the summer comes to an end, I'd like to share a very

special memory with my friends in Northlake. This past August,my family and I took a trip to the East coast for a familyreunion. It was great to catch up with family who you don't seevery often. On our way home, my daughters insisted we stop in

Washington D.C., so that I could visit the Korean WarMemorial, a war in which I served in 1951 and 1952. It waschilling to see the life size figures of our soldiers during that timeof war. I was deeply moved by this tremendous honor I sawdisplayed. Perhaps more so, were the people whom I have nevermet, and will never see again, come shake my hand and say"Thank you, for your service to our great country". As we left,we stopped at the WWII memorial. Never have I been so proudand felt so much love for this great country we live in. To all ourmen and women who continue to fight for our freedom and forthis great land, I say Thank you to you and may God Bless usall.

Respectfully Submitted,Fred J. Paul, City Treasurer

Message from 77th District StateRepresentative Kathleen Willis

State and federal laws offer health care assistance and tax breaks forseniors, along with providing crucial protections from identity theft andelder abuse, but knowing where to even begin sorting everything out canbe a tall order. Getting all this information can be a challenge, andmaking sense of complex laws and endless options can be frustrating.

Further, our region is fortunate to be home to many great communityhealthcare providers and non-profit organizations aimed at providing greatresources to working families facing difficult times.

To assist our community, I am hosting my first annual Community Fairthis November in Melrose Park. The event will bring together state andlocal agencies, health care providers, senior service organizations andadvocates who will be available to provide information about theirservices and answer questions that local families may have about issuessuch as available resources they can utilize relating t]o health and wellness.

The First Annual Community Health Fair will take place on Saturday,November 2nd, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Melrose Park VillageHall Gymnasium, located at 1000 N. 25th Ave.

replace the smaller recycling bins have been asuccess. Many people have commented that thecommunity looks neater and cleaner.

To keep Northlake’s recycling program on asuccessful track, we are asking that you your part.Household waste should never be placed in therecycling carts. Doing so contaminates recyclablematerials and the recycling cart will not beemptied.

CFL Safety andDisposal

Compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs)consumer much less power and last much longerthan comparable incandescent bulbs. CFLs,

however, contain a small amount of toxic mercury, sealed within the glass tubing. No mercury isreleased when the bulbs are intact or in use, butthey should be handled carefully while beingremoved from packaging and installed or replaced.Always screw and unscrew the bulb by its baserather than by the glass. Never forcefully twist aCFL into a light socket. When a CFL breaks, someof the mercury is released as mercury vapor. Tominimize exposure, follow these EPA-recommended clean up steps. Before clean up, haveall people and pets leave the room. Ventilate theroom by opening a window or door for at least 15minutes. Shut off your central air conditioning orheating. When it is safe to return to the room, puton protective gloves and thoroughly scrape upbroken glass and visible powder using stiff paperor cardboard. Use sticky tape to pick up remainingfragments or powder. Never use a vacuum to cleanup debris from a broken bulb. Seal the glass andpowder tightly in a glass jar or plastic bag. Washyour hands with soap and water after clean up.Broken CFLs are legally considered a hazardousmaterial and may not be disposed of with regularrefuse. Burned out, unbroken CFLs are acceptedfor recycling at Home Depot.

Outdoor FireplacesThe Northlake Municipal Code places certain restrictions on open burning

and portable outdoor fireplaces in order to protect lives and property. Therestrictions summarized below do not apply to outdoor fireplaces, charcoalgrills, burners or similar devices when used solely for cooking food.

- Outdoor or portable fireplaces may be used only with approved fuel:propane, natural gas, charcoal or seasoned logs. It is illegal to burn yardwaste, leaves, lumber, paper, cardboard, unseasoned logs or garbage.

- An outdoor or portable fireplace must be located and used at least 15feet from any structure. The firebox must be located above ground level.

- The outdoor or portable fireplace must be constantly attended by aperson over the age of 17 until the fire is extinguished. An adequateamount of sand, dirt or water, or a portable fire extinguisher with aminimum rating of 4-A must be on hand for immediate use.

- No outdoor or portable fireplace may be used in such a way as to emitoffensive or objectionable smoke or odors, or when atmosphericconditions or other circumstances make such fires hazardous.

Observing these simple precautions will help keep you, your family andyour neighbors safe and happy.

Uses for MulchThere may be different types of mulch, but they all perform at least three

basic functions: they reduce soil water losses, suppress weeds and protectagainst temperature extremes. In several studies, soil moisture percentages inareas that received mulch were twice as high, the temperatures of the soilwere 8 to 13 degrees less and the amount of time required to remove weedswas reduced by two thirds.

It can be used as ground covering in a flower garden to prevent weeds. Itprotects the roots and bark of the trees when put around a tree base, and itcan also be decorative, cover areas that may not grow anything because ofshade.

Mulch is available at no charge through Public Works Department. Youcan call to request it be delivered to your home at 708-562-0940.

Mustang Baseball Wins theTourney

The 2013 Northlake Baseball Mustang Team won the Westdale summerHeat Tourney by knocking out powerhouse teams such as Roselle,

Arlington Heights, Rival Westdale and Elmwood Park in the championshipgame. Northlake, who beat Elmwood Park by a score of 3-2, was led bypitcher/catcher Kayley Reith, who went 5-10 in the tourney while pitching10 scoreless innings. Northlake was also powered by the bats of RoccoRodriguez, who’s 2 run single in the 2nd inning put Northlake ahead forgood in the championship game. A steal of home by Elijah Diblic was theinsurance run needed as the game ended with a play at the plate thatHollywood can’t even write. A perfect 2 man cut by Jordan Tokarz to TylerOlsen to Reith was the tourney highlight. Also participating on the teamwas Reno Dugo, Ricky Rawski, Danny Flores, Carlos Vasquez and JasonO’Donnell who led the team with 9 RBI’s during the 6 game stretch.

Northlake Knights Finish Up 49-10The Northlake Knights part time travel team finished the season with a

49-10 record. Starting winter workouts in early January, this dedicated

group of 9 year olds proved that you can keep your talent in house and besuccessful outside against bigger towns and stronger competition. Winningtheir own April kickoff tourney by defeating the Elmhurst Cougars, theKnights pushed forward as they knocked off big power towns such asHomer Glenn, Oak Brook, Lockport, Will County elite and more. Theyparticipated in the “A” League of the high powered WSBL League andmade it to the final four before losing to a high powered baseball academyRhinos Baseball 10-5. “One bad inning was all it was as we shut them outfor the other 5 innings,” said manager Jeff Reith. The Knights alsoparticipated in the All Suburban League, run by Westdale. A league with 9and 10 year olds, the Knights finished 2nd overall and making it to thechampionship game against a strong 10 year old team from Elmwood Park.

Northlake would get their revenge on Elmwood Park as they would knockthem off in the Westdale Heat Tourney. Maybe the highlight of the year wasgetting the chance to play on the grounds of the Milwaukee Brewers where theywould play Will County Elite on the famous Halfaer Field. Leading the Knightson the mound was Kayley Reith, throwing 53.1 innings while striking out 129batters and walking only 17 with an ERA of 1.29. Also on the mound wasRicky Rawski who came up big for the Knights as well.

Leading the way at the plate were Jordan Tokarz, who led the team with a635 batting average, Rocco Rodriguez, who lead the team in slugging at 931 aswell as handling 1st base. Elijah Diblich and Tyler Olsen manned the middle ofthe infield all year, flashing leather that is not seen by most 9 year olds. Elijahled the team in stolen bases and runs scored as well for the Knights. Alsoparticipating were Frankie Chadiez, Jayden Ramirez, Daniel Garcia who, as theonly 8 year old, showed flashes of great mess, Vince Gallo and Jason ODonnel, who let the team in numerous defensive categories as well as extra base hits.
