Life with Collies in North RanchBy Irene Marshall

Diane Palumbo is a lucky lady! Not only does she live in what she considers to be a little slice of heaven, beautiful North Ranch; but her next door neighbor is also her sister, Eileen. While working for Amgen in 1991, Diane made the move from Encino to North Ranch. The mountain terrain, wide open spaces, and well maintained homes truly make North Ranch a uniquely magnificent community.

In April of 2009, Diane tied the knot with Walt Balinski in a beautiful service at the Vineyards in Simi Valley. Their home is always full of family, friends and of course, their three canine pals, Pumpkin, Joey and Sunny. They are a close knit Italian family, originally from the East Coast. They love to hang out in the kitchen, making wonderful home cooked Italian dishes. And everyone knows, a family that cooks together stays together! Walt and Diane also demonstrate that you don't need to be a kid to play with your toys! They love their two Corvettes, a red 2008 Z06 and a black 2009 ZR1. They are even members of the Thousand Oaks Red Line Corvette Club! They also enjoy many adventures in their RV to the mountains, lakes, beaches,

and National Parks of the Pacific Northwest and California. For Walt and Diane though, there is no contest, Priest Lake in Ida-ho takes the gold for favorite vacation spot. They love the crystal clear water and the peaceful and rustic community atmosphere.

These days, Diane is the Corporate Vice President of Human Resources for a biotechnology/pharmaceutical company. If Diane did not have enough on her very full plate already, she is also the acting chairperson for the Southern California Biomed-ical Workforce Development Committee and on the executive board for the California State University Professional Science Master's Program. She is taking classes in Animal Communi-cations, and is a long time supporter of the Southland Collie Rescue. Diane delights in her next door neighbors, her sister Eileen, Eileen's 17-year-old twins, Sam and Angie, and their loving dog, Winnie. It is very clear how proud Aunt Diane is as she informs us that her nephew and niece will be graduating from high school this year and headed off to college. Sam was accepted to California Lutheran University to study Criminal Justice and Angie was accepted to UCLA for pre med.

As a child, Diane had a lasting fixation on the movie Lassie. Today, Collies and all kinds of dogs are Diane's passion. So much that, even on her wedding day, Diane's friends and family confessed that although Diane and Walt looked fabulous, it was Princess Rose, Diane's precious Collie that stole the show. With her level of intel-ligence, Princess Rose could have been a show dog, but that was not the life that Diane wanted for her beloved pet. Princess Rose arrived in Diane's life at the perfect time and offered her the love and happiness that she needed at a difficult time. All of Diane's dogs have brought her tremendous joy over the years, but the recent loss of Princess Rose was devastating. Diane continues to support her favorite charity, the Southland Collie Rescue and even added another rescue to the family last year. Someday, when Diane retires, she hopes to become an Animal Communicator and send all pro-ceeds directly to her favorite charity in loving memory of all her Collies: Major, Honey, Polkie, Lady Di, Lad, Pumpkin, Joey, Sunny and the beloved Princess Rose.

Countless students come through the doors at Mathnasium with an innate phobia of math; but, they don't really “hate math.” What they hate is being frustrated, embar-rassed and confused by math. Rangu Mandyam worked in the biotech industry for many years in addition to teaching biology. Her children were fortunate enough to get a good educa-tion, so Rangu wanted to give back to

the schools. Her passion for teaching, her need to make something of her own, and her desire to give back to the community resulted in the dawning of the Thousand Oaks Mathnasium. Rangu's children graduated from Agoura High School, so it was her desire was to open an educa-tional franchise in the area. According to Rangu, “After doing some research, I was very impressed with the Mathnasium method, and became the owner of the Thousand Oaks location in 2008.”

They offer one on one instruction in a group setting, private lessons, SAT, ACT and ISEE preparation, help with home-work and test preparation, summer power math workout and First Steps. They specialize in math and use a proprietary curriculum perfected over 30 years of ser-

National Charity League-Conejo Valley Modelette program is an event put on annually by the 10th grade Ticktockers and their mothers. The event features a fashion show by the 10th grade girls, as well as an opportunity for them to hone their skills of public speaking. Modelette is also a community ser-vice project with proceeds benefitting one of our philanthropies selected by the girls. This year’s proceeds from the event bene-fitted Manna Food Bank and guests were asked to bring canned

goods. In addition, we honor our Senior Ticktockers by having them participate in the event modeling long gowns.

This year's event was held on a very rainy Sunday, March 20th at The First Neighborhood Community Center at 2:00pm.

HealthWellness&Refined sugar: It’s not your grandma's sweetenerBy Dr. Lindsay Erickson

Your doctor should be dedicated to educating and treating patients using physical, nutritional and emotional therapies in order to help patients live a healthy lifestyle. Using the gentle touch of Applied Kinesiology, they can identify where your system is out of balance. You need to adjust your body and opti-mize your nutrition to redirect information to the right place so that you can regain balance.

An example of this loss of balance is ingestion of refined sugars. Refined sugar is not a nutritional essential. In fact, it and its “cousin” white flour are primary causes of the leaching of health-ful nutrients from our bodies-while at the same time leading to many unfavorable conditions such as diabetes, predisposition to heart disease, hypertension, sluggishness, brain fatigue, over-weight, irritability, mental depression, impairs the assimilation of calcium and destroys vital amino acids if they are cooked in its presence.

How do refined carbohydrates and sugars cause so many problems? The body is like a factory that needs all the “parts” to complete its purpose of maintaining health. Nature provides nutrients in complexes such as vitamin complexes, minerals, trace minerals, fats, enzymes, and coenzymes, making available all the “parts” needed to metabolize food and to complete important health building functions. When the refined forms of these “foods” are ingested, the body attempts to gather all of the missing nutrients from other food you have eaten or from your body tissues to make them com-plete before assimilating them. These foods literally suck the vital nutrients out of your body. The nutritional deficiency that remains leads to health problems.

If you don’t have any of the diseases mentioned above- why should you care? For a disease condition to develop many stages of degeneration must exist. First the body must become deplet-ed of the nutritional essentials for health. Once this occurs, organs and glands begin to struggle to maintain health and symptoms begin. Symptoms are a warning sign that the body is losing its ability to keep you healthy. Over time this degenera-tion leads to disease and sometimes death. In rare occasions, the first symptom experienced is severe. For example, in 1/3 of people who suffer heart attacks, their first symptom of heart disease is death.

What are some important symptoms that are usually dismissed as random to watch out for? Fatigue-- the feeling of needing the boost that sugar brings. Dizziness upon standing up, aller-gies, lightheadedness if meals are delayed, craving of sweets, afternoon headaches which eating relieves, emotional instability, heart palpitations, headaches, nervousness, depression, and/or anxiety, leg cramps after exercising, indigestion, joint stiffness and more.

May is National BBQ Month, so ladies, there’s no time like the present to “man up” on your grilling skills this Memorial Day.

Stock Your Tool Belt. Having the essential cooking tools will help you work more efficiently.

•Twotongs– Wrap one with red tape (for raw food) and the other with green to avoid food poisoning.•Instantreadthermometer– Piercing with a fork, or pressing with a spatula only lets out juices that keep the meat tender. Poke it once and just let it cook.•Grilllight–No more turning the food too quickly or tucking the flashlight under your armpit because you have to remove it fast to keep it from burning.•Baskets– Don’t let all your sweat and hard work slip through the cracks, literally. Keep vegetables, seafood and the like on the grates with grill baskets that allow for easy turning.

Give it a Man’s Touch. You can have the best grill and tools available, but if your tech-nique isn’t up to par, then the final product won’t be either.

James B. Stockdale stated in a speech in 1981, that from his 8-year POW horrific experience, he distilled one all-purpose unoriginal idea. This came about as a result of the extreme con-ditions of internment, torture, and long term and intense pres-sure he and his fellow prisoners endured.

It is a simple idea, an idea as old as the scriptures, an idea that is the epitome of high-mindedness, and an idea that naturally and spontaneously comes to men under pressure. If the pressure is intense enough or of long enough duration, this idea spreads without even the need for its enunciation…that idea is you are yourbrother’skeeper.

This excerpt leads to one of his favorite quotes by Francis Bacon, “Adversity doth best induce virtue…while luxury doth best induce vice.” Then Stockdale follows-up with, “That’s the flip side of what’s in it for me.”

Unfortunately, many families confuse these concepts, usu-ally from lack of attention, lack of priority, or lack of harmony. However, an epiphany resulting from torture or tragedy should not be necessary to bring clarity. Likewise, the corollary thought of Bacon’s eloquent quote should not be a foregone conclusion, nor should adversity and luxury necessarily need be mutually exclusive or in opposition when discussing virtue.

Producer states, "The grapes for this wine were selected from mature vineyards in Northern California.” The wines were fermented separately and aged in once used French and American oak barrels for 15 months. Zinfandel 86%, Petite Sirah 14%. The aromas and flavors are of dark berries, mocha, black pepper and spices. This is an excel-lent value, so drink it!
