NotePublisher’sDear Friends and Neighbors,

The other day while driving up north on Lindero Canyon early on a crystal clear morning around 8:30 am, I was struck yet once again by the beauty of North Ranch with the green hills in the back ground. There were so many people out jogging, speed walking and walking their dogs. The local coffee shops and shopping centers were already buzzing with people and their pets. What a beautiful way to start a weekend! I wanted to mention that when you visit or call our sponsor businesses, let them know you saw them in NRL. If they know the residents of North Ranch enjoy the publication and appreciate their par-ticipation, it helps them. Without these sponsorship of these businesses, we would not have NRL. And we have the sponsors to thank for the full color issues of NRL from now on. Please look us up on facebook under North Ranch Living and say you "Like" it and become part of the page.

Do you know a in North Ranch? special Dad

Dad might be the big strong guy who shows up to squash the bugs, fix whatever is broken and makes us feel protected. Other times he is the person who works hard and we wish we could spend more time with. Sometimes dad is the funny guy who makes us laugh and plays sports with us. Whatever type of male role model you have, they all need to be appreciated.

If you have a great dad or know a great dad, let us know about him. We have some tickets for you to treat him to MB2raceway or Muvico Theatre to show him how spe-cial he is. North Ranch FamilySpotlight: Zuhdi SardarThe artist next doorBy Jodai Saremi, DPM Photographed by Marvin Steindler

North Ranch Living recently caught up with Zuhdi Sardar, a long-time North Ranch resident and local artist, as he wrapped up a project for NBC studios. Although he considers himself retired, Sardar frequently does consulting work for the studios. Best known in the entertainment industry as a journeyman with an invaluable fund of knowledge, he has painted innumerable canvases for television scrims, and creates sets from Styrofoam, plaster of Paris and foam molds; his work also hangs in Jay Leno’s illustrious garage housing his extensive car collection. During an interview at his home, Sardar discussed his work and life philosophy that drives his creative explorations.

Wandering the halls and rooms of his home, Sardar narrates a timeline of his career as an artist, noting the various styles and “periods” of his artistic expression outside the entertainment industry’s sets, from brightly colored shaped canvases of the 70’s, to representational expressionism of his unique cheesecloth and fiberglass sculptures, and the realism of his molded fabric and polyurethane orchids series. The broad reach of his interests is remarkable, especially when one learns the story of the odys-sey that is his life.

A graduate of the school of fine arts in Baghdad, Iraq, Sardar was not allowed to portray his Kurdish ancestry in any of his work. Even as an art student in Paris for two years, directors at the American Center for Students and Artists in Paris banned him from saying he was a Kurdish artist. In Baghdad, at the Friends of the Middle East Cultural Center, Sardar’s paint-ings of Kurds in traditional costume were removed; he was only allowed to show landscapes. Everywhere he turned, he was blocked from freedom of expression.

But, fortune smiled on him as an émigré from Iraqi Kurdistan, when Sardar visited Washington D.C. in the late 1960’s. A rela-tive of his who worked for Hargrove, Inc. (specializing in events and displays), encouraged him to apply for a job. Unable to work freely as a Kurd under the Iraqi government’s relentless ethnic persecution, Sardar took him up on the offer. He was given his green card and residency in the U.S. through the company.

Crisscrossing the U.S., from D.C. to Monterrey, Calif. and then to Colorado and Minnesota (where his first wife, whom he mar-ried in 1971, had family ties), Sardar found work as an artist in

an assortment of places: He painted murals for General Electric and the Central City Opera and worked on sets for NBC and ABC studios. Even in the midst of his active life here with two children (a son and daughter), a divorce, and then marriage to Judith Cohen, the plight of his people was never far from his mind.

Employing many different types of media, his art reflects both the violence of men against each other (movingly represented in his sculptures of Kurdish torture victims from Sulamaniyah) and also the good things in life (such as the love of a father for his son, as portrayed in the sculpture, Father & Son). He catego-rizes the Sulamaniyah pieces as belonging to a Dark Side of the Elements series, but is currently working on a series of paintings that he calls the Bright Side of Elements. These paintings depict lithe dancers emerging from the centers of larger-than-life tulips and orchids. “The idea of connectedness motivates me because I feel good about people. My art is affected by the posi-tive things I see,” says Sardar. “Even the ugliness of life is inter-esting in art if it’s executed uniquely,” he says.

Though Sardar believes that a good artist’s work must be inno-vative, with the artist “standing with one foot in the future and one in the present,” he doesn’t believe art has to have a political or spiritual message all the time. “It can be entertaining, color-ful and pleasing too. The artist can open a door to something you’ve never seen or felt before.”

Essentially, he believes that art serves humanity and conveys a

message of awakening. “It makes you aware,” says Sardar, who also explores conveying his messages through photography and writing when he can’t find time to be in his studio. “If you have a cause, it [art] never ends—things come to you,” he says.

Visit www.ZuhdiSardar.com to view his body of work, includ-ing his most recent publication, Inspiration Out of the Blue (Ivy House Publishing, 2004). Or stop by 800 Gallery on Lanker-shim Boulevard in North Hollywood. To meet Sardar himself, if he isn’t in the gallery or studio at home, look for him puttering in his eclectic garden or exercising with his wife, Judith, at the Spectrum. Becoming acquainted with this gentle soul is a true pleasure!

Does Your Smiling Face Give Away More Than You Think?

security newsBy Scott Nelson

Geotags—bits of data added to electronic images that indicate where they were taken—are automatically embedded in smart phone images and pictures taken using certain digital cameras. Criminals and other unsavory characters can use this informa-tion in a number of ways, from stalking unsuspecting victims to casing homes for valuable items or vacationing owners before a burglary.

That’s the bad news. The good news is that you can turn off the global positioning system (GPS) function on your smart phone and digital camera and thwart the efforts of these savvy crooks. Websites such as “I Can Stalk You” (www.icanstalku.com) provide instructions for disabling this function on many popular devices. Also, take the time to educate your family and friends—if they do not take the same precautions, their pictures may inadvertently give away the information that you are trying so hard to protect.

Scott Nelson is the president of Security & Risk Management Group, LLC (SRMG) in Westlake Village, California, and an adjunct professor at the George Herbert Walker School of Business & Technology (SBT) at Webster University. He was previously a U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) officer; a senior execu-tive in the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI); and the vice president of security for both Warner Bros. Studios and Time Warner Inc. For more information, visit www.srmg-link.com or contact him directly at [email protected] or 818-482-0540.

Elyssa Parton’s talent for interior design has roots in her fam-ily’s affinity for creativity in the arts and home furnishings. Growing up on the sets of such films as The Pink Panther, Pil-low Talk and Operation Petticoat (all of which were authored by her father), and spending time with her grandparents at their furniture store, Parton was introduced to design concepts which honed her sense of style. Although she first started working in the fashion industry, where she gained experience in put-ting together chic, elegant clothing lines and accessories, the dream of opening a store began to germinate. With the help of friends and family, the idea morphed and developed into a fur-niture store. Along the way, Parton had become charmed by the “romantic, seductive quality” of Asian accessories and furniture. With Pacific Rim Home,Parton created an outlet for her love of all things Asian.

Providing quality Chinoiserie and oriental furnishings became the cornerstone of Parton’s business in 1984 when she opened her first Asian furniture store in Las Vegas. Twenty years later, after assisting her husband in establishing HP Associates con-struction and design, she moved her store closer to home and incorporated his work into her retail business. Today, in West-lake Village, she offers customers remodeling services along with design options for a complete home makeover.

“Every room needs a little Asian [influence],” says Parton who finds unique inventory through importers based in San Francisco. Most of her items come from China, Indonesia and Vietnam. In the past, she brought antiques in containers directly from China, but since this became increasingly diffi-cult, she opted to find other avenues for stocking the store. She also travels to New York, Atlanta and Las Vegas for gift shows where she purchases items such as Thai Rain Drums, beautiful

Teena Leonardi silk wall hangings, Parvez Michel Giglée paint-ings, and hand-carved Buddhas. Additionally, online, she offers unique Umano beads which are jewelry for the home made to “inspire the spirit” with messages of happiness, longevity or bliss. These items are made in California, as are one-of-a-kind custom furniture pieces including beds, dressers, coffee tables and dining tables. “There is no other design element that brings in beauty, serenity and sophistication like an Asian accent piece,” she says with conviction.

Parton actively uses her experience in the fashion and enter-tainment industries. “I do believe fashion and home design go hand in hand,” she says. “When planning out a client’s home, I definitely take into consideration the colors that they look good wearing; after all, you want to look good sitting on your sofa!”

Paying attention to color, textures, fabrics, line and each indi-vidual’s style ensures clients are satisfied with the results of her work. In fact, one client flew Parton on a Leer jet to lunch in Napa as a “thank you” for a job well done. In addition, Parton’s friendly demeanor and welcoming attitude puts people at ease. Not a day goes by without someone stopping by the store to just talk about life and how they can make the world a better place. “What started out as a retail store has become a place where my customers come to relax, share a piece of chocolate or a fortune cookie,” says Parton.

As a result, Parton feels fortunate to be part of “such a wonder-ful community.” So, when representatives of local organizations have approached her for contributions, she has been delighted to comply. She supports the Wellness Community, Habitat for

Humanity, Westlake Women’s Club, MG & J Outreach Pro-gram, and Relay for Life, and many others.

But her main goal continues to be helping people find perfect harmony through design. “I love being able to create a beauti-ful space that brings serenity to a home,” says Parton, who is currently redefining her showroom space to incorporate more design elements. Fabrics, wall coverings, upholstered pieces, along with a stunning collection of lamps, accessories and wall art, all at good prices, keep customers coming back. And during the remodel, selected items in Parton’s inventory are even being offered at reduced rates—which is a real treat, because although it’s always a bargain when shopping yields exclusive finds, being able to purchase them on sale is even better.

Fitness Can Be "CLASSy!"Hey all, it’s the Boss of Fitness, back with another article to help keep all of you empowered and educated in the confusing world of health and wellness. Let's talk about how fitness can be CLASSy. Fitness classes are very popular and for good rea-son. They generally offer a combination of cardiovascular and strength activities. Being in a group environment keeps people motivated. Since there is such a class variety, you can constantly mix it up, and variety of exercise is a key component for helping people avoid as well as break through exercise plateaus. Here are some quick explanations and benefits of some of the more popular classes available in the area. You can use this glossary to help you choose which class will suit you best! Cardio Kickboxing - Challenging! This martial arts-based class is a high intensity, high impact, full body workout. Plan on lots of sweat and high caloric burn! Advanced kickboxing classes take a decent amount of rhythm, and move at a fast pace. “Newbies” need to ease into this or find a beginning or intro-type class. It is a challenge, but the results are huge.

Barre Core - Lean! This is ballet, dance-based class. It is a lot of volume (reps) and uses props such as dumbbells, bands and bars. You get a lot of "burn" without a lot of impact, so you are ‘beat’ but not ‘beat up!’ This class is a great combination of cardio, core, strength and stretching.

Bootcamp - Strong! Bootcamp classes can vary, but are usually a well-rounded mix of calisthenics, cardio intervals and strength training. The difficulty level can change based upon the instruc-tor’s expertise and preferences. It is a great class for people of

all fitness levels because it is not rhythm-based, and it is easy to take breaks and/or pace yourself. Definitely a class that as your fitness level improves, you can put more into and get more out of it.

Zumba - FUN! This is a great class for people of all fitness levels and ages. It is a low-impact, non-stop energizing calorie burn. It does take a little bit of rhythm to do, but the choreog-raphy is fun and easy enough to pick up fairly quickly. The hour flies by and you sweat your butt off and burn a good amount of calories.

Yoga - Chill! Although yoga has many different levels, it is consistently a good workout of the mind and body. It can be slow-paced, and is great for posture, core and flexibility. You are in control of many stationary body positions, making it very easy to work at your own level. Don’t be fooled, however, by its calming atmosphere, you will feel it for days afterward! So use these descriptions to help select the class that is right for you. Or better yet, let these descriptions prepare you for what you’re getting into, and try them all. The more you mix it up, the better your results. Plus, with variation, you will avoid pla-teaus and boredom! So head to "Your Gym," and take a class today!

FinancialFitnessAlternative InvestmentsBy Mark Wendell

PlanMember Securities Corporation or Mark Wendell does not offer alternative invest-ments discussed in this article. This article is intended for educational purposes only and is not intended to provide specific investments advice or recommendations for any individual. Individuals interested in such investments are advised to consult a qualified advisor for investment and tax advice. This is not an invitation to subscribe to alterna-tive investments. To the extent permitted by law, no liability is accepted for any loss or damage as a result of any reliance on this information.

Wall Street, world events, occupation, and personal life are the sources of the daily bombardment of stresses. Will investing in “alternative investments” help reduce this debilitating barrage? No guarantee, but more meaningfully designed portfolios with greater diversification and fewer correlated assets in an investor’s portfolio should certainly help one sleep better at night. The reason is simple. Alternative investments provide the potential to profit in both rising and falling markets. The hard part is

finding the appropriate alternative investment managers. Cur-rently, there are over 6,000 companies and individuals who offer alternative strategies.

There are many examples of alternative assets: Art and Antiques, Precious Fine Wines, Rare Stamps and Coins, and Sports Cards and other collectibles. However, there are also more traditional alternative assets including Hedge Funds, Ven-ture Capital funds, REIT’s and Real Estate LP’s, Metals (Gold & Silver), Specialty ETF’s, Private Equity, Long/Short Equity, Managed Futures, Options, Commodities, Derivatives, Struc-tured Products and Life Settlements.

Investors seeking more stable and consistent returns may diver-sify into alternative assets to gain market exposure away from traditional investments. The real differentiating factor is not so much in what the investment funds may own, but in how they invest and manage their positions. Additionally, the real clear definition lies not in the name or category, but in how an investment behaves. Two tests to clarify the definition of alternative investments are: 1) Measurement of the lack of cor-relation of market movements of assets to mainstream stock and bond assets. 2) Measurement of the amount of alpha - the return obtained that cannot be explained solely by a market’s movement - that can be generated in a less efficient or less liquid market. The low correlation advantage is the reduction in exposure to systematic market risk factors. Portfolio invest-ment strategies seeking low correlations to systematic risks are frequently referred to as absolute return strategies. Their key objective is to attain relative independence from the per-formance of underlying traditional benchmarks. However, this strategy may limit the upside in bull markets, but may be desirable in negative market conditions due to a low correlation portfolio design strategy.

Some specific alternative assets may be less liquid than tradi-tional investments. Therefore, they may have longer invest-ment time horizon requirements and may add an element of risk. Many alternative asset investments require the investor to be an accredited investor, which defines minimum thresholds for income and net worth to participate. Finally, there may be

NeighborhoodNews

additional costs, taxes and reporting implications which tradi-tional investments do not possess.

While investing in ‘Alternative Assets’ traditionally have been the province of wealthy investors, the evolution of global finan-cial markets and the development of new hybrid securities has brought much more breadth and depth of investments for all investors. They may now be added to portfolios of all sizes to provide the benefit of meaningful portfolio design with optimal asset allocation, and therefore, meaningful portfolio returns resulting from a measurable degree of independence from cor-relating systematic market risk factors.

Wine BarBy Tim Ready

the

Fontanafredda Barbera d'Alba Briccotondo 2008, $15 list price

Always know that I have personally tasted these wines and I make sure my local wine supplier has them in stock. Email me at [email protected] if you need help finding it.

Always on the hunt for good wine values, I happened to stumble upon a very popu-lar grape from Italy known as Barbera, which tends to be on the less expensive side, but is great for everyday drink-ing. Barbera grapes are the third most grown type of grape in Italy. It tends to be on the less expensive side compared to a Nebbiolo grape since its vines have a higher yield. Since it is less expensive, it is generally grown in the cheaper, less desirable sites in Piedmont, northwest-ern Italy. In the area of Alba, not much Barbera is grown but rather the Nebbiolo grape is the largest under vine. My rec-ommendation is from the Alba area, so I thought it was a good story and after tasting, a good value for 11 dollars.

Tasting notes are: The nose is packed with black fruit, especially blackberries and plums, with slight spicy overtones hinting at black pepper and cinnamon. Sweet, soft tannins come together in a closely-woven texture that merges with the fruit, while a crisp freshness provides a long, tasty finish.

The thing that impressed us so much about the group was the deep friendships they have developed, all through Bunco. HOME-STYLEDFrom Trash to Household TreasuresBy Marsha Webster, The@Home Groupie

Convert a kitchen stool into a night-stand. If your feet have given your wood-en, step stool a beating, give it a paint job, then wrap and secure a tutu around the seat’s edge. It’s an encore performance for an outgrown costume, and an enchanting addition to a little girl’s room.

Turn old calendar pages into gift wrap. Make a birthday present more special by taking a page from that calendar month and circling the special day. To personal-ize it even more, write your favorite quote or inspirational saying in the space.

Make hooks out of old silverware. Leave spoon-bending tricks to psychics and magicians. For a more amazing feat, repurpose mismatched and old flatware by turning them into useful kitchen hooks to hang oven mitts, dishtowels and keys.

Repurpose wine glasses as candlehold-ers. To cast romantic shadows at the din-ner table, place a scented votive candle inside and anchor it in a bed of sand or small pebbles (it makes wax cleanup a snap). These make for nice hostess gifts as well.

Dress up your refrigerator with brooches. For most families, posting reminders on the fridge is commonplace. Instead of tossing out seldom worn or broken brooches, remove the pins with a wire cutter, glue a magnet to the back of each, and then use them to mount postcards, children’s artwork, or this week’s grocery list.

Lawn&Garden

Choose a Sunny LocationThere's no better way to start than by choosing a sunny spot for your garden. Most vegetables need six to eight hours of direct sun a day for best results. Leafy greens like spinach and lettuce can thrive with a bit less. The ideal garden location has loose soil that drains well. If your soil isn't perfect, you can improve it over time by adding organic matter such as compost.

Raise the BedsNext, measure and stake each garden bed, and outline the beds with string. To raise a bed, first loosen the soil in the bed using a shovel or a garden fork, then shovel soil from an adjacent path onto the bed. You can also stand in a pathway and use a rake to bring up soil from the next pathway. Smooth the soil on the surface of the bed by raking.

Feed the SoilI garden organically and try to address the soil's long-term needs by supplying plant nutrients with natural fertilizers and compost. Building soil takes time, and nutrients from most organic products are released into the soil slowly. As I build each bed, I broadcast several inches of compost or natural fertilizers like decom-posed chicken manure over the surface and work it into the soil with my rake.

Direct-SowIn early spring, a week or two before the last frost, I sow beets, carrots, parsnips, peas, radishes, Swiss chard and turnips, as well as the many delectable salad greens such as arugula, Asian mustards, cress and leaf lettuce directly in the garden. These greens grow particularly fast from seed. After the last frost, I direct-sow beans, corn and squash. Among herbs, dill and cilantro are sure bets from direct-sown seed.

TransplantsI always plant transplants of “cole crops” -- broccoli, Brussels sprouts, heading cab-bage and cauliflower, as well as eggplant, parsley, peppers and tomatoes. There are several vegetables, such as summer squash, lettuce and fall-planted broccoli, that grow and produce equally well from either seeds or transplants.

Easiest to GrowI've found that the most reliable crops to grow in much of the country are arugula, beets, Swiss chard, green beans, leaf let-tuce, parsley, peppers, radish, summer squash and tomatoes. All adapt unusually well to various regions if planted at the right time for your region.

Time it RightThe average date of frost in spring is the key date to use in garden planning. If you don't know the date for your region, check with your local extension service or a local nursery.

Planning aVegetable Garden

When I was young, my parents offered me a tiny plot of ground in our backyard for my own garden. That first season, I grew carnations, tomatoes and cucumbers. After 30 years, I con-tinue to learn about and experiment with new vegetable varieties and plant combinations. I make discoveries every season. But over the years I've settled on a garden layout that utilizes three-foot-wide raised beds. It is, I think, the key to beautiful and productive gardens.
