optimism is a characteristic many self-subscribe. som

    these people are wrong.

i realize this accusation may seem rather pessimistic,

drawing the l ine between pessimism and optimism.

i also submit that optimists are the most annoying pe

Fifteen years ago the four-acre property

located next to 2120 Payne Street (Mercy Sacred

Heart Vi l lage) was just an old Louisvi l le Paving

dumpsite, nothing but the remains of broken

buildings and a combined sewer pipeline. Thanks

to the hard work of several local Cl i fton community

members the old dump turned into the Cl i fton

Community Garden two years ago and was later

renamed the Bi l ly Goat Hi l l Garden, after the

original name of the area. This year, three Boy

Scouts (Jordan Bayens (11) Lucas Do (10) Charley

Nold (10) ) decided to do their Eagle Scout projects

at the Garden. The project is a requirement before

we can get our Eagle, which is the highest rank in

    Scouting, said Nold.

On May 22 2010, Bayens had gotten his

chance to take the next step in the gardens l i fe.

He built part of a walking path to be completed at

the end of al l three projects. The path is real ly l ike

laying down the foundations of a larger project.

It s the framework to , eventually and hopefully , lay

down a wheelchair-accessible path for the rehab

happens, the path wil l truly have made a huge

difference by letting seniors get back on the

one of the highest prides of the garden, the two beehives tucked

away in the corner of the f ield. A year ago the hives honey had won a

blue r ibbon at the State Fair . And on the 22 of May, they might have

even seen local Boy Scout Jordan Bayens (11) doing a demonstration

    with the bee caretaker, Elwood.

Bayens even got suited up in order to help with the

demonstration. At f irst I was a litt le bit nervous about helping

Elwood with the bee demonstration, because Ive never really enjoyed

the company of them, said Bayens. But once I got suited up I had a

    Going Ham- Wesley Bohn

    which provided a laugh to

all of the workers at the

    Billy Goat Hill Garden.

Jordan Bayenss (11) Eagle Scout Project had gone on peacefully, as it should. The boys were working hard, until about 11:00.

Hey! Everyone! Take a break, John Yarmuth is here, said Bayens. Congressman John Yarmuth (D) had come to the Billy Goat Hill G arden,

to vis it the Boy Scouts of Troop 40, and thank them for the work they were doing. I think that it was cool to see that Yarmuth showed up

because it shows his gratitude towards others who try and help out their community, said Bayens. Yarmuth was not the f irst to thank the

Charley Nold (10) , and a group of fr iends had been

sharing a lot of those moments over the last year

in the parking lot of Bel larmine College on Norris

    Place.

Nolds interest in the sport stemmed from

his fathers fondness for the University of Louisvi l le

mens basketball team. I started paying attention

in 1966 when I was 11, said James Chip Nold

Jr. Back then, we had Wesley Unseld, we were a

top f ive team, and the only team better than us

was UCLA, and they were unstoppable. It wasntlong before Nold Jr . began to take his son to the

games at Freedom Hall . From there Nold began to

play with some fr iends recreationally . I wouldnt

have even thought about playing i f my best fr iend

Wesley wasnt so into it also , said Nold. Wes

They had begun a routine of Basketb

    Nold.

Red one! said Jani Podlesney (11) Blue One! said Charley Nold (10) .Charley, thats a Toyota, not a Volkswagen, said Podlesney. This was a partof a game the two and their other fr iends were used to playing on their way

to Bellarmine College for their Basketball Wednesdays. The Game was played

with a very s imple rule: upon seeing a VW you must call out the color and hit

the nearest person to you. I was never that great at it , but I st ill play anyway.

It s just another competitive thing we do to pass the time, said Nold. Besides

Chip Nold Jr . A gift from Nolds mother of season tickets had brought them there. The love of the game kept them there. Watching

those games brought us so much closer together, said Nold. He attended s ix games with his father. He remembered one in particular .

The game against Notre Dame was definitely my favorite. It was the second to last game ever played at Freedom Hall. The energy was so

high, said Nold. It went into tr iple-overtime, and even though their best player was injured and couldnt play, it was still great to win.

they didnt . And the best part, we beat a Number 1 ranked team.

It s a dif ferent world there, you act

how you want to act, do what you want to

do, and say what you want t o say, said Nold.

He had attended four Y Conferences a year

    since 8th grade. But this one was different;

Nold had seen an inf lux of fr iends from outsideof his usual group of Y fr iends, and these

friends were ones from school, Boy Scouts,

and everywhere in between. At f i rst I was

apprehensive about a lot of them joining the

Y because I didnt think that they would feel

about it the way I did, said Nold, but I was

    definitely proven wrong, and I m glad I was. I m

so happy I got to share that side of me with my

    other fr iends.

Three of Nolds fr iends had jo ined his

inner circle of Y fr iends: Lucas Do (10) Ryan

    Simpson (10) and El i Fosl (10 ) . As soon as I

got there I real ized everyone was cool and

friendly, but at f i rst I was scared that I wouldnt

f it in . After a while I real ized that through al l

my fr iends from school, I could make fr iends

easi ly because they were part of the same

    community, said Fosl .

Nold seemed l ike he had looked

back on the experience with fondness, and

saw everything in a new l ight. Having them

become a part of my Y l i fe made me real ize,

there is no Y fr iends or Y l i fe, thats just an

excuse not to act that way outside of those
