NOAH AND THE ARK

BffiLE BASIS

Genesis 6:1 - 9:17

LESSON AIM

That the child will learn that God was with Noah and the animals during the rain and that God is with·himduring the rain ..

SCRIPTURE INSIGHT

In addition to being a historical account of God's protection during a period of judgment, the story of Noahand the Ark presents a beautiful picture of salvation in Jesus Christ. Just as Noah was given a way to escapejudgment, we are given a similar opportunity. For Noah, the Ark was the only means of escape; for us, JesusChrist is the only way Oohn 3:36). The door on the Ark (Genesis 6:16b) through which Noah and his family enteredrepresents Jesus, who said, "I am the door; by me, if any man enter in, he shall be saved ... " Oohn 10:9). Thefact that God Himself closed the door to the Ark after they had entered (Genesis 7:16b) reminds us that Godseals us into Christ (II Corinthians 1:22). The decision to enter the Ark was made by each member of Noah'sfamily, and our family members must each choose to enter into Christ in order to be saved. God warned Noal).about the flood (Genesis 6:13), and God warns us today about anotherimpending judgement (Matthew 24: 36-41,II Peter 3:3-7). Will you be ready? If you are in Jesus, you will be saved, just as Noah was saved in the Ark (IIPeter 3:10-13).

GREETING

As each child enters the room, give him a smiley rain drop. As you place it in his hand, havethe following conversation: "Good morning, (child's name) • This is a smiley raindrop. Can Iput him in your hand? He says God was with Noah and the animals when it rained, and God iswith you when it rains. Would you like to take smiley raindrop over to one of the table?" (Directthe child to a center table with fewer children. Refer to the teacher supervising the table by nameif possible) ..

Tape a piece of white butcher paper to the wall. Tape or color a strip of green grass onto the paper, and tapethe boat onto the grass. (The boat will need a flap cut out of the center bottom for a door.) Encourage the childrenthat are going to work on the mural to sit in chairs around the mural so they can watch each other. Open yourBible and tell the children that the story of Noah is from the Bible. Tape pieces onto the butcher paper as you·tell the story~(See craft patterns). (1) Noah - "Noah built the big boat because God told him to do it." (2) Animals- "Then God told Noah to put the animals in the boat because the rain was coming." Let several children tapethe animals On top of the boat and inside the door of the boat. (Leave the flap up by pressing it back.) (3) Cloudsand Raindrops - "The Bible tells us that God sent the rain." Let the children tape the raindrops anywhere theyplease~ (If you have younger children, you may want to limit the number of pieces to be taped and leave off theclouds.) (4) Water - "The rain made so much water if began to cover up the grass and the boat began to float"(tape the strip of water over the green grass) "in the water. But Noah and the animals were safe and dry in theboat. It was time to go and the Bible says that God closed the door." (Place a small piece of tape at the bottomof the door, and let the children take turns closing the door.) "God was with Noah and the animals during therain. Noah was not afraid because Noah knew God was with him!"

If you have time, let each child re-tell the story by answering you as you ask, "What happened first, second, etc.?"You can end your center time in prayer, thanking God for being with Noah in the rain.

2. Noah And Me

The purpose of this activity is to relate the fact that God was with Noah during the rain and the fact that Godis with the child dun'ng the rain. Knowing that God is with him during a stann can help a child not to be afraid.

. Using the craft patterns, cut out a boat, two animals and Noah. You will also need to make two raindrops,a"simple house (cut, the door so that it will open) and a smiley face ...

*NpYE - If you have a plastic Noah and the Ark set, you can use it instead of the craft pieces. Choose onlytwo animals from the set and put the others away.

Draw two large circles on your table. One circle will be for the Noah pieces, and the other circle will be forthe house pieces. Give each child at your table one of the pieces that you have cut out of construction paper.Have the following conversation: (Open your Bible to Genesis. If you have a children's picture Bible, it shouldhave a picture of Noah.)• "The Bible tells us that God told Noah to build a big boat because a lot of rain was going to come. Who has

Noah's boat? Please put it in the circle." (Point to the first circle.) "Who was Noah? Put him in the boat."• "God told Noah to put some animals in the boat. Who has the animals? Put them in the boat."

• ''Then, after Noah put the animals in the boat, it started raining, just as God had said. Who has some raindrops?Put one of them up above the circle with Noah in it and let some fall onto the animals."

• "Now, this is our circle for Noah. It rained and rained on Noah, but God was with Noah and the animals. Hekept them safe. Noah could pray to God anytime he was afraid."

·"Let's make a circle for us. We don't live in a boat, do we? Who has the house? Put it in this circle." (Point tothe second circle.)

• "Who has our smiley face? Let's pretend he is (child's name) ." (Child who has the smiley.) "Let's pretend helives in this house. Open the door, put (child's name) inside. Close the door because it is about to rain."

• "Who has the rest ofthe raindrops? Put them on and around the house."• "When it rains on our house, sometimes w~ are afraid. God is with you when it rains, just as he was with Noah;

If you are afraid when it rains, you can pray to God. God is with you when it rains."You may want to repeat the activity. Then, if possible, end your time in prayer, thanking God for being with

the children when it rains.

3. Children And Animals Of The Lord, Place four to six chairs in a non-traffic part of the room. Arrange the chairs in pairs, one pair behind the

other. Wrap a long strip of butcher paper around the entire group of chairs. (This will be the outside of your"ark.") Leave an opening in the butcher paper to enable the children to get in and out of the Ark. Youmay wantto have an extra strip of butcher paper to tape over the opening after everyone is "on board."

You will also need four to six different stuffed animals, a towel for Noah's headdress and an umbrella.Set the animals near the boat. Then invite the children to come over and sit by an animal friend. After they

are seated, open your Bible and tell them that the Bible says that God told Noah (the teacher will be Noah onthe "trip") to build an ark (point to the "ark"). God also told Noah to put animals on the ark because it wouldsoon rain. Explain to the children that they are going to pretend to take a trip on the ark with Noah. Have thefollowing conversation:

Page 4: NOAH AND THE ARK - mail.indepres.orgmail.indepres.org/media/littlelambs/Noah and the Ark.pdf · NOAH AND THE ARK BffiLE BASIS Genesis 6: 1 - 9: 17 LESSON AIM That the child will learn

\.

• "The ark is all finished." (Pretend to hammer in the last nail.) "It's time for all my friends to come aboard."(Guide the children in choosing an animal friend, getting into the ark and being seated. Noah gets into the ark, too.)

• "Is everyone here? Is (animail here? Is . (animal) here?" (Have a "roll call" of all the animals aboard.)• "After all the animals were on the boat, God closed the door." (Teacher tapes the butcher paper door closed.)• (Hold out your hand, palm up.) "I think it is beginning to rain! I must put up my umbrella." (Put up your um

brella.) "Let's get under my umbrella. We don't want to get wet!" (sing "Pitter, Patter.")• "It rained and rained. The water began to get higher and higher. It covered all the grass. The boat began to

float. But Noah and the animals were safe and dry in the boat. God took care of them."

• (Hold out your hand again.) "It has stopped raining!" (Put down your umbrella.) "The water is going away,I can see the grass again. The boat stopped floating. It is on dry ground. We can get out!" (Open the doorand guide the children and their animal friends in getting out of the ark.)

• "Now, let's thank God for keeping tis safe and dry while it rai.ned." (Teacher and the children get down ontheir knees and say a short prayer.) .

Repeat this activity, allowing a child to be Noah. (He will need some guidance from the teacher.) The teacherwill narrate.

FOR CHILDREN 24 MONTHS OLD AND UNDER

I. Mr. Noah Mural

The purpose of this activity is to teach the children the Bible Story of Noah while they are placing theanimals in the boat,

Tape a piece of butcher paper to the wall. (Refer to the "And God Closed The Door" center forolder children if you need a picture.) Place a strip of blue water (or draw it) onto the butcher paper. You will tape the boat across the center in order to form a shallow pocket. Then animals will be ableto "stand" in the boat. (Your boat will not have a door.) Cut out six to eight animals. (You will haveseveral of the same animal. See craft patterns.) Cut out six to eight large raindrops. (Large raindropsare easier to handle.)Cut out Noah (see craft pattern) and tape him to a stick. Place all the animals in a bowl.

As each child approaches, hold Noah up and have the following conversation: (with Bible in yourlap) "This is Noah. Can you say Noah? God told Noah to put all the animals in the boat." (Point tothe boat.) " (Child', name) , would you help Noah put some animals into the boat?" (Let the child reachinto the bowl and pick two or three animals to put into the pocket of the boat.) "God watched overNoah. God loved Noah and the animals."

Let the children take turns placing the animals in and taking them out of the boat. Some childrenmay want to hold Noah and make Noah say, "It's time to get into the boat, elephant!", etc.

After the children have put the animals in and out of the ark, let the children tape large raindropson and around the ark. Remind them that God watched over the animals and kept them safe duringthe rain, "Thank you, God." (You may want to sing, "Pitter, Patter" after all the raindrops are tapedonto the paper.)

If possible, have the children [old their hands in prayer as you thank God for keeping Noah safeduring the rain ..

2. Our HouseThe purpose of this center is teach the children that God is with them when it storms.

Make a large house from butcher paper, a long piece of construction paper or a sheet of posterboard. Cut five or six window flaps and a door that will open and close (by cutting only three sidesto form a flap). Cut out six to eight large raindrops and six to eight smiley faces.

Lay the house on the table. Youwill want to tape the house at several points to keep it from moving.Give each child at your table a smiley face and begin your conversation (with open Bible): "The

Bible says that God is with me when it rains. Do you ever get afraid when it rains? (Child's name) ,

would you put your smiley into the house? Close the window. The rain is coming." (Repeat the aboveconversation until all the children at your table have put their smileys into the house and closed thewindows.) "Here comes the rain!" (Let the children help lay raindrops on top of the house.)" (Child's name)

do you think your smiley is afraid when it rains? Open your window and see." (Guide the child in opening

*NafE - Place a "Bible basket" in a special spot in your room. Begin to encourage your children to bringa Bible. As the children enter the room, they should place their Bible in the basket where is should stay untilstory time, when they can be passed out. After you have concluded the part of the story where the children havetheir Bibles open, they should then place the Bibles on the floor under their chairs.

Encourage your children to pray for the other children by starting a prayer basket. Use any basket and tiea ribbon on it to make it attractive. Place four or five praying hands (see praying hands pattern in the lessonon "I Love To Pray") into the basket. You may want to glitter the hands. Make a chart out of posterboard (seediagram) and place it on the wall or lean jt against the wall near your story circle. The chart should have all thechildren's names on it with a "pocket" made from a square of construction paper under each name. The "praying hands" should be able to slip down into the pocket.

\\'f"\\~S. m~R\()t.JoAs the children come in today, ask them if they have someone they want to pray for. You will need to offer

some suggestions until the children understand. This will take several weeks. If the child expresses a prayer need, guide the child in placing the "praying" hands into the pocket under his name. Before storytime call attentionto the prayer chart; then pray for each child's need. You should only have four or five "praying" hands. Placethe prayer basket near the door on your worship table or in a special comer of your room. Remind the childrenabout the prayer basket each week as they come· into the room.

*NafE - The story will require more time today. Please plan your time spent in each center accordingly.

CENTER TIME

1. And The Ark Floated

(please read Genesis 6, 7 and 8 to prepare for this center.) The purpose of this center is to remind the childrenthat God was with Noah and the animals. You will need some Playdo, a large pan, a Plastic container or any shape .with a top, or anything that will serve as a boat, a watering pot filled with water, a lunch sack with several rocks, stickswith leaves attached for trees and some dirt and grass.

Have your Bible open to Genesis 7. Place the large pan in the center of the table. Give each child some Playdo. You may need to give suggestions for making different animals. A picture of Noah and the ark would help. You

Page 9: NOAH AND THE ARK - mail.indepres.orgmail.indepres.org/media/littlelambs/Noah and the Ark.pdf · NOAH AND THE ARK BffiLE BASIS Genesis 6: 1 - 9: 17 LESSON AIM That the child will learn

will want to talk about the following points as the children work:

1. God's unhappiness with all the people because they were not obeying God.2. God's happiness with Noah because he was obeying God.3. God took care of Noah because Noah obeyed God.4. God told Noah exactly how to build the ark.

After the children finish the animals, guide the children in making their own "Noah scene" as if might haVElooked before and after the flood. Have the children place "trees" (sticks with leaves attached) in small ball~of Playdo and place them into the pan. The rocks and grass can also be put into the pan.

Have the children "walk" their animals up to the ark as you remind t,he children that God told Noah whento put the animals on the boat. Place the Playdo animals into the bowl. Put a lid over the bowl. Tape a squareof construction paper on top of the lid for the door. The children can take turns closing the door as you remindthem that the Bible says that God closed the door, and Noah and the animals sat on the boat. Pour water ontothe pan from a watering pot until the "boat" begins to float. Remind the children that God made the rain comefor 40 days, and God took care of Noah and the animals. Empty the water from the pan as you tell the childrenthat God stopped the rain .. Let the children remove the animals from the "boat." Remind the children that the Bible says that Noah

prayed to God when he got off of the boat.2. Because The Bible Tells Me So

Bring some items from home that will remind the children of times that God is with them as He was withNoah. Some items you may want to bring are as follows:car keys, pajamas, urpbrella, thermometer and a lunch box.

'. Let five children hold one of the above items as they sit in chairs facing the other children. Pass a pretendmicrophone from child to child as you ask each child about his item. Draw in the rest of the children as you askquestions such as, "How do you know that God is with you in the car?" End your time in prayer thanking Godfor being with Noah and us. Perhaps several children would like to pray.

STORY TIME

1. Supplies NeededBible; animal patterns (see storytime patterns for 4 & 5's); 2 large arks cut from any color butcher paper

(see diagram); crayons; a large Noah (see curriculum craft pattern); extra paperdolls for Noah's family.

2. Preparation For StoryEase the children to your story circle by singing your transition song. Once the children are seated, sing "Where

is ?'., act out monthly rhyme, say monthly Bible verse, begin with prayer.

*BIBLE LEADER - Have one child come up and read (repeat after you while he is holding the open Bible),"God was with Noah and the animals in the rain." Genesis 6:1 - 9:17.

*NOTE - The story will be done differently today and will require more time. Youmay want to use the storyas a center and story together. Youwill want to place your tables together facing the butcher paper. The childrenwill need to sit around the table. Seven or eight children will color a pair of animals. Two children can trace overthe dotted lines drawn on one of the arks. The ark should already be taped onto a larger sheet of butcher paperon the wall. The other ark will be used a.s the door of the ark. The dotted lines on the ark divide the ark intothe rooms where the children will place the animals. Severa.l children can color the water around the ark. Onechild will color Noah .

You may have as many animalrooms as you want. The purposeis to show the child that Godwas organized and caring.

in opening their Bibles to Genesis 6. You will read several key verses together from the Bible. You will read theverse first, then let the children repeat it with you one or two times. You will want to stop and make a brief ex

planation of the verse. "Read" together, Genesis 6:6, "God was very unhappy with all the people because theywere bad."

*NarE - The children do not need to fine! each verse. They only need to have their Bibles open as you read.

• Genesis 6:8 - "But Noah found favor in the eyes of God." You will want to explain this verse to the children.

• Genesis 6:13 - "God told Noah that He would send a flood of water to destroy the earth."

• Genesis 6:14 - "God told Noah to build an ark." You will want to explain to the children that God told Noahexactly how to build the boat. (See verse 16.)
