UP AND COMING

News from University of Missouri Extension 4-H Youth Development

Through Clover Kids clubs, children learn how to get along, share and work in groups, explore their interests and build self-confidence. Each Clover Kids Corner provides an activity, information or other materials that Clover Kids leaders can use in planning and implementing experiences that introduce 5- to 7-year-olds to the 4-H concept of learning by doing.

A Doorstep Garden Turn an old boot into a stylish planter.

Materials

• Old boot (Lace-up type works best or child's size cowboy boot.)

• Pebbles or aquarium gravel

• Potting soil or loam

• Small bunch of annual flowers

What you do:

1. Remove the lace from the boot or loosen it enough to allow tongue to be pulled forward. Or if using a cowboy boot you will need to smash down the shaft of the boot.

2. Fill the bottom of the boot with a layer of pebbles or aquarium gravel to provide drainage.

3. Pack in a 2-inch layer of potting soil or loam.

4. Fit in the root base of annual flowers (pansies, marigolds, or impatiens work well).

5. Gently pack more soil around and on the top of the roots.

Tips:

Remember to water the flowers regularly because, unlike those that are planted in the ground, these blooms cannot draw moisture from the surrounding soil.

2013 ARBOR DAY, EARTH DAY AND THE 4‐H MILLION TREE PROJECT

Gerry Snapp

4-H clubs, project groups, members or families are encouraged take action for the environment in April. It’s been a late and extended winter but spring will come. April is a great time to par-ticipate in the 4-H Million Tree pro-ject in conjunction with celebrations of Earth Day and/or Arbor Day. Plant one tree, a dozen or a hundred – but do something to benefit our environ-ment. As you plant your trees please enroll in the 4-H Million Tree Project and record your tree planting online.

Go to the Missouri 4-H Million Tree website for details. http://4h.missouri.edu/programs/milliontrees

As you prepare for spring events, keep these suggestions in mind:

1. Keep members informed of upcoming events and the importance of participation

2. Remind members again of requirements for completion and eligibility for exhibiting at fairs and shows.

3. Inform members about application deadlines for camps, State 4-H Congress, state spring contests, Missouri Citizen Youth Forum, etc. Youth are our best recruiters, so have them share experiences and recruit others to engage in these events and opportunities.

4. Will your club provide some financial help to members who attend events such as, camps, State 4-H Congress, state spring contests, Missouri Citizen Youth Forum, etc.? Work with members on making families aware of assistance that your club or county provides.

5. Remind horse project members that horse enrollment form is due to the MU Extension center by May 1. You may want to encourage the horse project leaders to offer time to answer specific questions concerning this enrollment.

6. Work with officer team and program planning committee about planning and scheduling a local club achievement day prior to county achievement day. This will encourage project leaders and members to complete their projects earlier.

7. Make sure new family mentors are helping new families understand how these contests and events fit into the 4-H Club and what they need to do to participate.

Project Leader Tips: Prepare for achievement day and fairs

LEADER LOOKOUT April club leader tips

Many projects are in full swing as we prepare members for achievement day or the county fair. The project may be almost complete, but is the 4-H member ready? If your county provides a conference judging experience at your fair or achievement day, how can you help your members prepare for this experience? Reflection at the end of each project meeting is a sure way to prepare them for questions a judge may ask them. Also, do you ask them how they will use what they have learned at your project meetings?

Your club leader or the club officer team may have asked for help in providing hands-on activities at the county achievement day or club meeting. Don’t forget that there are resources at your fingertips for coordinating skill-a-thon stations, judging classes, demonstrations ideas, speech topics, etc. Many of these great resources can be found in your project curriculum or on the University of Missouri Extension 4-H Web site at www.4h.missouri.edu.

MISSOURI 4-H YOUTH FEEDING COMMUNITIES

Steve Henness

Missouri farmers are working hard to produce food for their fellow citizens but sometimes it is not evenly distributed or affordable for everyone. 4-Hers of all ages are encouraged to join the Revolution of Responsibility by starting or doing something that contributes to hunger awareness, hunger relief, or food security in their communities. Missouri 4-H will focus community service in 2013 on reducing hunger and ensuring everyone has enough to eat. The goal is 10,000 hours of youth and adult volunteer service against hunger by the end of 2013.

Another part of Missouri 4-H Youth Feeding Communities is 4-H members are encouraged to ask farmers in their area to participate in the Invest an Acre program. ADM, The Howard G. Buffett Foundation, Monsanto, and Feeding America have partnered to launch Invest an Acre program to give farmers across the country a way to donate one acre or more of crop proceeds to help fight hunger in their own communities. Visit www.investanacre.com for more information. 4-H hats will be provided for the first 100 farmers who pledge a part of their harvest to Invest An Acre.

There are many ways you can help. Get your club together and start a large hunger fighting project. Volunteer at your local food bank. Visit with farmers about the Invest an Acre program. Inform others in your community about the effects of hunger. The possibilities are endless! Visit http://4h.missouri.edu/programs/hunger/ for more information and volunteering project ideas. On the 4-H project page is a link to record your volunteering hours. By joining the Revolution of Responsibility you can make a difference in your community.

Nodaway County Shooting Sports Invitational to be held Annette Deering, Youth Specialist The Nodaway County 4-H Shooting Sports Invitational will be held Saturday, May 4, at the Noel Miller Range in Ravenwood, starting promptly at 9:00 a.m. All participants must be pre-registered with the Nodaway County Extension Office by 4:30 p.m., Friday, April 26. Money and registrations will not be accepted the day of the Contest. In order to participate in the Contest, participants must be enrolled in 4-H Shooting Sports, and must have completed 740 Safety Training or Hunter Education Training, or must have attended one of the 4-H Shooting Sports Safety Clinics. If you have questions, or need special accommodations, please contact the Nodaway County Extension Office by April 26. While we will do our best, we cannot assign event squads to meet personal schedules that day. The Contest will start promptly at 9:00 a.m. and will move as quickly as possible. Lunch and snack items will be sold at a concession stand on the grounds. Proceeds will go to the Northeast Nodaway Bluejays 4-H Club. Again this year – the Nodaway County 4-H Shooting Sports Committee is selling 4-H Shooting Sports T-shirts. Proceeds will go to the Nodaway County 4-H Shooting Sports program, to help with equipment and upkeep. The shirts will be NW Region – not specific to Nodaway County. Please see the artwork on the reverse side of this letter. You may purchase shirts for family members, friends, leaders, etc., by pre-ordering. The shirts will be available to pick up at the Contest on May 4. Shirt orders must be received by April 26. Orders received after the 26th will be refunded.

This Contest will follow the 2013 State 4-H Contest Rules as closely as possible. It is the responsibility of each coach and youth participant to know these rules. The rules may be found at http://www.4h.missouri.edu or contact your 4-H Shooting Sports Leader or local Extension Office. Participants need to furnish their own equipment, including eye and ear protection, if required. Also, please note, Senior Shotgun will shoot 50; Intermediate Shotgun will shoot 25. Please read carefully –- DO NOT BRING AMMUNITION. The state contest rules indicate that participants may furnish their own ammunition at the State 4-H Contest. For our local logistics and safety reasons, we are NOT allowing ammunition to be brought to the Nodaway Contest. Target Grade A ammunition will be provided. Any participant bringing ammunition onto the grounds is subject to immediate dismissal. (One exception to the rule: Participants shooting in the .22 Rifle Peep Sites 50 Yard Intermediate and Senior divisions may bring their own ammunition. Those choosing to do so must check the ammunition in with an event leader immediately upon arriving at the grounds.) Examples of State 4-H Contest Rules to be aware of:

General Rule– While in the case and when brought to the firing line, air rifles and air pistols shall have a weed eater string (of bright color) in the barrel and protruding a minimum of 6 inches out of the muzzle and out of the action (Clear barrel indicator). Smallbore rifles and pistols should use Open Bolt Indicators. BB guns should use weed eater string, if possible.

General Rule– All firearms, air guns, and bows must be in a case at all times except when on the range and ready to participate in the event.

Shotgun Rule– Shotguns are to remain in a case until range official allows them to be racked (immediately prior to shooting). No handling is permitted until called to the field/station. Must be cased when moving between ranges.

Shotgun Rule– No resting muzzle on shoe or toe pad. Pad to rest muzzle on is permitted – but must be a pad on the ground…not any part of the body.

Archery Rule - All bows are to be in a case of some sort prior to being called to the line. Recurve bows are to be brought unstrung and will be strung when on the line.

BB and .22 participants – be aware of changes made in the 2013 rules regarding shooting positions.

We anticipate the T-shirts to be short sleeve, orange, with the following logo. Please realize artwork may change slightly at time of printing.
