A Note from Fr. Quealy Wednesday is the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is a Holy Day of Obligation! It is a good time for us to reflect on the miracle of the Assumption. Mary was assumed body and soul into the glory of heaven. How blessed is she who bore the Son of God, cared for Him as a child and suffered at the foot of His cross. Wouldn’t it be great to attend Mass and pray that our patroness Mary may continue to intercede for us to the heavenly Father for all of our needs. God Bless, Fr. Quealy Mass Schedule for the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary -- a Holy Day of Obligation: Vigil Mass Tuesday, 8/14 at 7:30pm and on Wednesday, 8/15 at 8 and 9am and 12:05pm. History of the Assumption “The Feast of the Assumption is one of the oldest holy days in the Church, with accounts of celebrations going back to the sixth century. Christians in the East, both Catholic and Orthodox refer to it as the Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos, or "the falling asleep of the Mother of God." The earliest printed reference to the belief that Mary's body was assumed into Heaven dates from the fourth century, in a document entitled "The Falling Asleep of the Holy Mother of God." The document is written in the voice of the Apostle John, to whom Christ on the Cross had entrusted the care of His mother, and it recounts the death, laying in the tomb, and assumption of the Blessed Virgin. Tradition variously places Mary's death at Jerusalem or at Ephesus, where John was living.” www.thoughtco.com ~~~~~~~~ Religious Ed Teachers & Assistants Needed Will you help our children to learn and live their faith? A PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly

Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time - August 12, 2018

“Elijah prayed for death, saying: This is enough, O Lord. Take my life, for I am no better than my fathers. He lay down and fell asleep under the broom tree, but then an angel touched him and ordered him to get up and eat…for the angel of the Lord came back a second time, touched him and ordered ‘Get up and eat, else the journey will be too long for you.’ He got up, ate and drank…he walked forty days and nights to the mountain of God, Horeb.” We return to Capernaum and find Jesus telling us ‘I AM the bread of life.’ It is in the Eucharist we find Jesus present to accompany us on our journey. Elijah was awakened twice and was ordered to brace himself for the journey. Jesus is the bread of life for us. We often overlook how great, how important, how necessary is this gift for our spiritual survival. How many people in the world die each day of starvation? Too many, and we are called to assist them. How many people in the church take the gift of the Eucharist for granted? We speak of a priest shortage, while we should focus on the lack of appreciation for the gift of the Eucharist. Where in our world are people deprived of what is so essential, yet we sometimes take the priesthood, the mass and Eucharist for granted. If Jesus is the bread of life, I need to go to Him with renewed fervor and gratitude. ‘Get up and eat, else the journey will be too long for you.’
