NHIN TOUR IN VIETNAM
A COLLABORATION BETWEEN
SAMESTUFF AND SAOSOONG THEATRE
Project report by Phan Y Ly
I. BACKGROUND
The project is a remount of Mong into Vietnamese version (Nhin) and a co-operate workbetween SameStuff Theatre (Vietnam) and SaoSoong Theatre (Thailand).
Nhin was first devised by Nut Nualpang (Saosoong theatre) and Phan Y Ly in 1st
Mekong
Performing Arts Laboratory in Manila, Philippines, organized and hosted by thePhilippines Educational Theatre Association (PETA) in 2005. Under the name Mong, the performance marked the first collaboration between the two theatres of Vietnam and
Thailand.
The story of Mong is about one mans search for pleasure on the internet. He met anattractive woman and they shared childhood stories as well as sexual fantasies. The man
quickly fell in love with the woman and later found himself the victim of a sex web thatsells nude mens photos. Mong is a witty comedy piece with gentle warnings on the
consequences of cyber sex.
Following its success in the Philippines, Mong was then expanded into a collaborationtour in Thailand and Vietnam, which gave birth to this project. In June 2006, Phan Y Ly
of SameStuff Theatre came to Thailand to collaborate with Saosoong theatre to remountMong into Thai version. The dialogues, visual and audio effects were changed to suit
Thai audience. Mong was toured in 9 universities in Bangkok and Chiangmai andreceived great responses.
In October 2006, SameStuff and Saosoong theatres met together in Hanoi and Mong was
once again remounted into Nhin. The dialogues, audio, and visual aspects were onceagain revised to suit Vietnamese audience and culture. Nhin was performed 7 times in 1
public theatre and 3 universities in Hanoi and 3 universities in Ho Chi Minh city from 19
October 6 November 2006.
This report is an account of the achievements, observations, and evaluations of the
collaborative touring of Nhin in Vietnam.
II. KEY ACHIEVEMENTS

2
Building a production team
Following on PETAs volunteer initiative to support the 2nd
Mekong Performing Arts
Laboratory in Hanoi, Vietnam. Nhins team had been able to mobilize effectivevolunteers to assist its tour in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh cities. While sometimes
challenging in terms of team management, the contribution of the volunteers formed one
of the keystones for the success of the project.
The team itself is consisted of 23 members, including actor/director, mediadesigner/actress/ project manager, producer, stage manager, technical team, and co-
coordinators, among these the actor/director, producer, and stage manager are fromThailand. The rest are volunteers who are students from different universities in Hanoi
and Ho Chi Minh cities. Our volunteer group in Ho Chi Minh city, after the completionof the project, has decided to expand their partnership and became a well-known non-
profit tourist guiding group called Sai Gon Hotpot.
Strengthening the inter-country partnership between Saosoong and SameStuffTheatre
The partnership between Saosoong and SameStuff Theatre was once again strengthened, with significant gain in understanding our differences and commons of culture, working
styles, and artistic directions. For artists from Saosoong theatre, this was the 2nd
time theyworked in Vietnam. Despite of the language barrier and differences in cultures, the
collaboration between Thai and Vietnamese staff was kept at maximum level to ensuresuccess of the tour. Such particular collaborations can be seen between the actor/director
(Thai) and actress/media designer (Vietnam), the producer (Thai) and volunteers, tourcoordinators (Vietnam), the stage manager (Thai) and technical team (Vietnam).
Partnership with responsible authorities for approval of the performance
Within the overall institutional framework in Vietnam, all public performances arerequired to have approval from a competent authority. In order to have the performance
approved by the Ministry of Culture and Information, Nhin partnered with Vietnam StageArtist Association, a reputable organization that supports performing artists. In this case,
as a partner, the Association guaranteed the quality and content of the show andsponsored the whole process of submitting and obtaining permission for performance of
Nhin in Hanoi and Vietnam. SameStuff Theatre became one of the Associationsmembers as a result.
Partnerships with host institutions in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City
With Nhins touring, the project was able to establish partnerships with six universities inHanoi and Ho Chi Minh city. These partners played extremely important roles in
organizing rehearsal and performance venue, mobilizing audience and hosting the shows. The performances were taken as part of the educational program for their students in
Gender and Sexuality.
Other important informal partnerships
8/14/2019 Nhin Tour in Vietnam
3/16
3
Besides these major and official partnerships, Nhin had been able to link up with otherartists and personalities during its tour. These artists either helped the project team in
particular work (for example Vu Nam a theatre artist - who gave us extremely helpfuladvises on the Southern audience culture, and became the MC for one of our show) or
helped linking us with essential contacts (Youth Theatre, in search for a lighting team..,
Minh Ngoc, gave insight about the overall performing art industry in HCM city..)
Mobilizing the Target audience
The actual number of audience attending the show was more than our expectation. Whilethe original estimation was just 1200, Nhin could actually reach approximately 1940
audiences in its 7 performances in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh cities. Below is the detailcalculation for each venue:
Hanoi city
Hong Ha Theatre 350
Humanity and Social Science 900Cinema and Theatre college 70
Journalism college 200
HCM city:
RMIT University 150
Huflit University 200 Economic university 70
Total audience (7 performances) 1940 people
Approximately 70% of audience are college students, 25% are NGO representatives,
cultural officers, artists, social workers, and representatives of different cultural and artDepartments, college teachers makes up the remaining 5% of the total audiences that
Nhin had reached.
Lessons learnt in producing a collaborative performance tour
The experience gained during the organization of the tour has been invaluable for the
project manager, particularly in scouting resources and making connections with artists, authorities, and volunteers.
Lessons learnt in managing a project
The project manager also gained significant hand-on knowledge in effective projectmanagement strategy. Building a sufficient working team and keeping detail
documentation have been the biggest lessons learnt which are being applied effectively inour other projects.
Contributing to wider social impact and change: accessing indirect target groups
through the media
Besides 1940 audience members who benefited directly from the performance and post-
show discussion, there are numerous audiences who did not attend the show directly butexperienced aspects of the performance and related discussion within the wider
community through various media events and coverage of the production.

III. ANALYSIS OF EACH PERFORMANCE AND POST-SHOWDISCUSSION
HANOI
PERFORMANCE 1 - 20 AUGUST 2006
9PM HONG HA THEATRE
Audience attended: 350
Mong was honored to be the performance for the opening ceremony of the 2nd
MekongPerforming Arts Laboratory in Hanoi, Vietnam. Hong Ha theatre is a well-known public
venue and was hired by the organizers of the Laboratory. The audience was theorganizers invited guests. Permission for the show was arranged by the host of the
Laboratory. Under the guidance of the host, we decided to perform the Thai version ofMong. This was the first time Nhin performed in Vietnam for Vietnamese audience; we
considered it as a test to see the audiences reaction towards the performance.
The team:This was still an infancy stage for human resource and team mobilization of
Nhin tour in Vietnam. The team was very basic: Nut (Thailand) actor/ director, Ly(Vietnam) media designer/ actress, 1 sound operator and 1 laptop operator (Vietnam).
At the time of the performance we had Chert (Thailand)to help as stage manager.
Audience: Because of the natural of the over all function, Nhins audience at Hong Hatheatre included high ranking officers in governments culture and art department, arts for
development practitioners, NGO representatives and staff, artists, social workers, andstudents. The audience was multi-cultural and came from different background. It was
full-house and the estimated number of audience attended is 350 people. The audience -especially young people and those who understand English- responded well to the

performance. We had some feedback from the students and they all understood the jokesand the spirit of the performance in general. Old generation audience tends to be
confused at the jokes as the subtitles in Vietnamese were much more subtle to avoidinstead of exposing the true meaning. A young student commented It is such a funny
play, really fun, but somehow I still feel worried after watching the play, the ending gives
me some warnings.
The show: The performance was performed in English with little mixture of Vietnamese
dialogues. We also had Vietnamese sub-title projected on the wall for Vietnameseaudience. Our main concern was how the Vietnamese audience and authority will accept
the show, but the response from the audience gave us clear signal that they enjoy the styleand story of Mong.
Censorship: We had to remove some of the visual clips that were said to be too sexy
for Vietnam. Nut the Thai actor also had to changed some physical acting to reduce theimplication of sex. For example, we had to remove some clips in the video where the
girl and the boy fantasize each other, and Nut had to choose a much more subtle way toshow that the male character is sexually turned on by the female character. The
Vietnamese sub-title was also modified to make the dialogue sound less sexual.
Other issues: During the performance, we had lots of technical problems; largely due tothe inexperience of team members who were operation the sound system and laptop. We
had 2 hours run through before the actual performance and it was not a sufficient time topractice with new sound system, especially for inexperienced operator.

PERFORMANCE 2 - 23 OCTOBER 2006
8-9.30PM - ACADEMY OF JOURNALISM AND COMMUNICATION200 people attended
Two months after the first performance of Mong in Hong Ha Theatre, Hanoi, Vietnam. The tour began at the Academy of Journalism and Communication. At this point, we hadhad sufficient time preparing for promotional material (brochures, posters, Tshirts..) and
made significant changes in visual, sound, and script, based on the feedback we had inHong Ha theatre.
The team: Besides the director and media designer, the team also included a Stage
Manager, 1 Coordinators and 5 volunteers in each city. The technical team consisted oflighting and sound operators, laptop and projector operator who were well rehearsed and
experienced in the work.
Audience: The audience was mainly the students of the Academy. Since most of themwere in the journalism and public relation field, we expected a very open and enthusiastic
audience. Even though the performance venue was quite large and could sit 800 people, and despite of the fact that we had disseminated the promotion material long before the
performance date, only 200 people attended the show.
The show: Since the college was quite far away from town, the performance mostlyaimed at the hostel-staying students who live within the college compound, and therefore
it was organized in the evening after dinnertime especially for this purpose. With this performance, the dialogue between the two characters was mostly in
Vietnamese. The visual chat was in simple English and there was no subtitle. Theaudience responded well to the play.
Post-show discussion: The purpose of the post-show discussion was to extend furtherour understanding of the audiences experience of the show and also to stimulate
discussion on the shows subject. Prior to the show, each audience was given a

books:
The most impressive play I have watched! Its very meaningful and
young. I hope there will be more information on this style of theatre
Very interesting, funny but highly educative for young people. In short itis wonderful!
I am impressed by this play. I hope you have Vietnamese subtitles so that
more people will understand its meaning. Thank you for the show

questionnaire about their cyber experience. After the show, these questionnaires werecollected and given to the MC. The audiences response level was quite low, however we
could invite some audience on the stage and share their cyber experience. Looking back, the post-show discussion was not as satisfying as wed like to. The MC was the one who
did the most talking and there was not much interaction from the audience. However we
hope some of the issues and questions raised beside the show did add on to theperformance and created further thinking from the audience.
Issues:
Lack of Producer: The producer was scheduled to arrive the night before the show start.
However it was realized at Bangkok airport that her passport expired. The producer couldnot come and had to produce the show remotely via emails. This resulted in last minute
extra and unprepared work to the project manager (at the same time actress/mediadesigner) and the coordinator. We solved this problem through delegation of tasks to the
coordinator, who was required to be on site 100% of the time and acted as a producerthrough the task list that was emailed to us. The night went OK but the overloading of
work severely affected the actresss performance and everybody elses spirits. And thisclearly showed when the actress had to go on to be the MC of the night.
Multi-tasking: The facilitation of the post-show discussion did not get to satisfaction
level. Besides the fact that the audience was quite reserve, the MC was in fact exhaustedand was low in energy level. The MC was actually also the project
manager/producer/actress/media designer and after this first try she realized that theamount of work went beyond her ability to handle. We accepted this as a lesson learnt
and decided to have somebody else to do the MC in the next show.
PERFORMANCE 3 - 25 OCTOBER 2006
9AM 10.30AM- ACADEMY OFTHEATRE AND CINEMA
70 people attended
The team: The team structure of this performance was the same with the previousshows. Taking up the role of the producer was the coordinator. This time the volunteers
and other supporting staffs were already used to the task and took initiative in their work.Everybody else in the team also learned to work together and everything became
smoother.
Audience The audiences are cinema students from the same school. The show wasorganized between class time and the students were mobilized by the teacher to attend the
show. The venue could hold 150 seats and about 70 people attended. We have notebookfor audiences comments on the show and have very nice responses from the audience.
The show The show was carried out in the same format as the previous performance, i.e.
in Vietnamese with simple English text. We were anxious to see the reaction of theaudience since they are also from theatre background and tend to be more critical than

other audience. However, they laughed and clapped during the show and even interactwith the male character.
Here are some samples of the audience comments, as written in our guestbooks:
I was very surprise to see this play. However, I would like to ask aquestion Will all the audience understand what you want to convey
via the performance? This is a very good example of an independenttheatre production, it can go further
I think the performance is very different and impressive
Post- show discussion From the previous experience and after discussion with the team,we had two volunteers who nominated themselves as MCs for the post-show discussion. The team discussed potential questions, possible directions of the discussion and other
facilitation alternative. The MCs however were not experienced and became nervous onstage. The discussion mostly was around the introduction of the two theatre groups, the
play, and sharing experience from the filled questionnaires and there was not muchinteraction with the audience.
Issues
The projectors power was off in the beginning of the show, after 1-2 minutes we couldcontinue the show. After the show we realized that one of our technical staffs stepped on
the projectors electric cable and the power point was pulled off by mistake. A quickmeeting was called and everybody made an agreement to double check all technical
aspects before show, as well as not walking around at the back stage prior to or during theshow.

PERFORMANCE 4 - 26 OCTOBER 2006
5PN-6.30PM - THEUNIVERSITY OFSOCIAL SCIENCES ANDHUMANITIES900 audiences
The team: At this time, the producer arrived 1 hour before the show start, which broughtfresh energy to the whole team who was already tired after few days of rehearsing and performing. Even though everything was already in order, one extra helping hand
certainly added great plus point to the confidence of the whole team.
The audience: The audiences are students of the university. We were first worried aboutthe timing (early evening) and its effect. But fortunately we got full-house. In fact there
were more audiences than the available seats (900 audiences) and many had to stand. Theaudiences were very open, friendly, high in energy and thus responded very well to the
play. This certainly added more energy to the actors and the technical team.
The show: Prior to Nhin performance, the college team had their own performances andwanted to incorporate them into the function. After 1 short skit and a few songs, the MC
(from the college) introduced our performance and Nhin started. The audiences werealready warmed up with the previous shows and were very eager and responsive to
Nhin. There was a great interaction level between the actors and the audience, basicallyhaving dialogue with each other! The audience also showed great understanding and
approval by giving endless applauses on almost every minute of the show.
Here are some samples of the audience comments, as written in our guest
books:
At first I found the performance very strange. But the more I watchthe more I am attracted. Very modern theatre and in tune with thecontemporary life. It is also very educative to the youth.
The play is very educative, especially to students like us
The acting style, the combination of theatre and film is very new and
appealing. It also talks about a very modern subject
I am shocked. It is really an impressive play!
Post-show discussion: The MC was a well-known MC from the college and she had adiscussion with the project manager before the show started. The audiences were shy at
first but the MC could encourage audience participation and had very nice discussionabout the play, internet, and other cyber sex issues.
Issues: While waiting for the students performances to finish, according to the schedule
there was one more performance, however this performance was cancelled and the next

show was Nhin. The students did not tell us in advance and luckily through theimpression that we got from the MC, we guessed the next show was us. The whole
realisation took place in 5 minutes and it was chaotic. The stage manager, however prepared he was, had to rush around trying to guess things between the lines. The
technical staff was also put in sudden work. Luckily we could handle this surprise and the
show started nicely. However there was a misunderstanding among the team as the StageManager thought the team miscommunicated with him, without realizing that the teamitself was the victim of the miscommunication with the college staffs.
HO CHI MINH CITY
PERFORMANCE 5 - 2 NOVEMBER 2006
7PM-8.30PM- UNIVERSITY OFECONOMIC70 people attended
This is the first show we had in Ho Chi Minh city. University of Economic is a biguniversity and located in the centre of the city. Besides, it is also next door to another big
institution - Architecture University. The hall and stage of the venue is also massive, canhold 1000 audience. We expected a very good show from these evidences.
Audience There were only 70 audiences turned up for the performance. It was very
disappointing given how large this place was. The reasons for this will be explained inIssue section below. The audiences were mostly students, and some invited guests.
Even though there were not many of them, we had very good response through out theshow.
The show The script was revised into local language and jokes. We performed in
Vietnamese and simple English, there was no subtitle. The turn out of the audienceaffected the actors mood but once the performance started running and got the response
of the audience, everything was in place.
Here are some samples of the audience comments, as written in our guest books:
Impressive! Unique! The actors are very lively. The play is a bit short and may be thats why it
couldnt go deep into the issue. However within 30 minutes the play wasable to convey as much as possible, it is a successful play!
Theatre! Film! Internet!
It is very unique, I hope to see this style once more. I dont feel very satisfied with this play, the ending is a bit sudden.
However it is still very interesting!

I found Nhin very interesting, unique, even the music and lighting. Besides it also depicts something realistic from life, within the cyber
citizens, and I am among them. This play helps everybody to have anopen view and has a very deep educative approach. However I think the
ending needs to be clearer, perhaps let the male character meets the
female and see how different tragedies happen
Post-show discussion
Despite of the fact that we had only 70 audience out of 1000 seats, the post-discussion
was quite lively. The MC was artist Vu Nam who agreed to help us with hosting theshow. Vu Nam is an artist based in Ho Chi Minh city and is quite experience in hosting
event. More over, another celebrity of Vietnam (MC Thanh Bach) also attended the showas an audience, and his review during the discussion had definitely liven up the night.
The discussion was quite interactive and there were lots of insight on the play, the reallife issues, and audiences experience as chatter.
Issues: The biggest issue that the Nhin faced in this particular show is actually notsomething uncommon in Vietnam, but we experienced it for the first time in the tour.Prior to the arrival of the team, our partner (the university) was said to be quite difficult
and unsure about the schedule as well as the venue, even though the university agreed tohost us. When the promotional materials arrived, the contact person of the university
commented that the images on the poster were too explicit and demanded these images tobe covered up with plain paper. For this reason, 2 days before the show when we arrived,
we could not see any display of the promotional material in the campus of the university.Beside the issue with the sensitive poster, the university requested us to pay 2 millions
Vietnam dong (150usd) as supporting fees to its staffs for working over time. When werequested a list of staff who will receive this fee so that we can thank them personally, the
university person simply said Its difficult and refused to give us any furtherinformation. From these signals, we understood this was a way of requesting for bribing
to the contact person of the university. After having private discussion among the team, the project manager decided not to pay this amount since we supposed it was an equal
partnership where both sides contribute. Further more, this nontransparent practice wouldset off as a tradition to any future collaboration. As a result, during rehearsal and
performance we were not supplied with air-condition (explained by the university thatthis privilege is only available for Vietnam president). There were absolutely no posters
displayed anywhere in or outside the campus, except two posters that we displayed infront of the theatre. Prior to the show, the campus gate (leading to the theatre) was closed
with a guard outside, all lights was switched off, giving no sign of any activities inside
the campus. Our volunteers had to travel to the surrounding areas and distributedbrochures and encouraged students to check out. Basically, if there were no volunteersstanding in the dark in front of the gate, telling people to come in because there was a
show, nobody would have known except our invited guests!Bribing had been widely practiced in Vietnam, even in this kind of non-profit purpose.
Despite of the fact that we had very low number of audience mobilized, we are happy forat least not contributing in the popularity of this bribing system.

PERFORMANCE 6 - 3 NOVEMBER 2006
4PM-5.30PM- RMIT INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITYVIETNAMSAIGONSOUTHCAMPUS150 people attended
Audience: RMIT is an international university and audiences are from differentnationalities; all of them are English speaking. Besides the students we also had someteachers who attended the show. We had full-house for this performance and the response
of the audience was very encouraging.
The show
The script was revised into English version since all students understood English. We had
a very good show due to the responsive audience who gave the actors very good energy.
Here are some samples of the audience comments, as written in our guest books:
So unique, new, and very funny Please organize more plays like this! Thank you so much for giving us
such a satisfying time!
It wasnt as I expected, the show was too short and simple. Thetechnique was not drawn in very high rate. Well, at least the topic is
interesting and new, that is no Vietnamese show has ever mentionedabout this before. Anyway, thanks for coming and your work on it.
I am very much interested in your performance, very real, you show
exactly the feelings as well as reactions of being a chatter, but I can only
see the negative side via this play, even though therere also advantagesof Cyber Sex
Very nice, very interesting, at first I thought it must be boring but afterwatching it I find the play very interesting and unique. The uniqueness is
in the acting and theatre form. I love it!
Post-show discussion The post-show discussion was facilitated by Nok the producer. Here the audience could share their experiences and thoughts about issues in the cyber
world. The discussion was quite lively and interactive and all audience participated till
the end.
Issues: In opposite with the attitude of our partner in the University of Economic, RMIT
welcomed and provided the best possible assistance to our preparation and performance. However, few hours before the show started, we realize the electricity supply of the
college was not efficient for the show. The reason was due to a miscommunication between the project manager and the colleges technician team during the preparation
period. We solved this problem by adjusting some power supply, cut down few more

lighting equipments and rehearsed with the new lighting sequences. The show went onreally well without anybody realizing a big difference in the lighting.
PERFORMANCE 7 - 6 NOVEMBER 20067PN-8.30PM- UNIVERSITY OFPROGRAMLANGUAGE ANDINFORMATIONTECHNOLOGY200 people attended
Audience The audiences were students of the university. Even though the university is
not an international college but our partner advised us that the students are Englishefficient and the show could be done in English without any problem. The audiences
were very open, energetic and we had full house.
The show The performance was carried out in English and we had very good responsefrom the audience. Since it was our last performance, the energy level of the actors and
the team was very high. All resulted in a great show with great feedback.
Here are some samples of the audience comments, as written in our guest
books:
I think this program is very useful for everyone
In my opinion, your play is very practical and useful for everybodywho often chats on internet like me. I hope you will have the show
here again next year
The show brings me many thoughts, life is not lack of traps and weneed to differentiate between the bad and the good for our own life
Post-show discussion: The discussion was facilitated by Nok the producer. We had
some nice stories from the audience who shared with us their experiences on internet. Itwas an open discussion and the audience enjoyed talking about their insights of the cyber
world.

to have a last minute an unconditional support from the Vietnam Stage ArtistAssociation.
Social Impact: During the tour, Nhin had been able to get the attention of the students
and press in general. In some level we could see the impact of the show in steering
discussion and talks about cyber issues among people who attended the show and readupdates about the tour. The inter-country and inter-medium tour also inspired other artistsin exploring and experimenting ways to use arts as a mean to serve social cause.
