Dear Professor Vivien Mallet,

My name is Le Ngoc Hoang Phuong (Le is my family name). I am from Vietnam. I graduated

from Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, University of Science, Vietnam National

University in Ho Chi Minh City. I am also a Master student of the French-Vietnamese-Master

2 in Applied Mathematics. I have just finished my Master thesis at laboratory MAPMO, Uni-

versity of Orléans under the guidance of Professor Magali Ribot. I saw the call for PhD thesis

"Estimation d’état et modélisation inverse appliquées à la pollution sonore en mi-

lieu urbain" on the website:

I read the description of this thesis and I found it interesting with me. So, I am writing this

letter to express my motivation for this PhD position.

I have a strong passion to Mathematics since I was in high school and university. In university,

my main interests in Pure Mathematics are PDE, Fourier Analysis, Functional Analysis and

Fluid Mechanics. Moreover, I found inspiration when I worked with computers. In the second

year, I studied to program in C++ and MATLAB. I like programming from the very first

time, when I studied to write printf("Hello World!") in C++ or disp(’Hello World!’)

in MATLAB. During my Master, I studied more about Numerical Analysis and Program-

ming. I have done many projects with computer in Optimization course, High Performance

Computing course and Fluid Mechanics course. These were also good opportunities for me

to improve my programming skills. I program in MATLAB more fluently day by day. Now

it is possible for me to program in Julia and Scilab as well.

Besides, I have just finished my Master thesis about "Numerical schemes for PDE sys-

tem with application to Chemotaxis", this is perfect for me to learn about application

of Mathematics to a biological phenomenon. I have implemented some numerical schemes

into a hyperbolic system of ρ, u and φ, where ρ is the cells density, u is the cells velocity and

φ is the chemoattractant concentration. Then, I studied to reconstruct ρ at the interfaces to

preserve the well-balanced property and make the scheme work better.

Moreover, I am doing an internship at Vietnamese-German University on the subject "Sta-

tistical Analysis of Turbulent Flows - Energy density spectra and temporal au-

tocorrelation from non-uniform fast Fourier transform (nuFFT)". The subject is

about wind engineering, and how we can reduce some problems like heat problem or air

pollution after the urbanization. Some of the very first steps is to construct and simulate the

heat map or the wind map. In order to do that, we study and implement the nuFFT method

to the data about the wind, which is collected from Michelstadt, Germany, then validate to

compare the experimental model and the simulated model. This internship is still ongoing.

I am a person who is really interested in exploring the application of Mathematics in real

life. With me, Mathematics should be practical to be more useful. Since the subject of this

PhD position matches my interests and my background in Applied Mathematics, I believe

that this PhD position is an ideal choice for me. However, by lack of knowledge, I am aware

that I should work hard and seriously to finish the thesis well. It would be a great chance for

me to work under your supervision to deepen my knowledge and pursue my passion.

To whom it may concern.

This is a recommendation letter for Ngoc Hoang Phuong Le as an applicant to a PhD Thesis inapplied mathematics.

Ngoc Hoang Phuong Le passed her 2nd year of the French-Vietnamese master in Applied Maths thisyear. She obtained, before the internship, a total mark of 86 over 120, corresponding to the total ofthe marks for the six courses she attended, which makes her the 8th student over 17 in her promotion.

She went in France to make her master 2 internship under my supervision in Orléans and I met her atthat time. She stayed 3 months with me to work on an article I wrote on some numerical schemes forsome PDEs models of chemotaxis. This article deals with the construction of some numericalschemes, particularly accurate around stationary solutions and to the comparison between two PDEsmodels linked together : a hyperbolic one and a parabolic one.

Ngoc Hoang Phuong Le worked very seriously on the subject and was able to understand the proofsof the main results of the paper, which is very satisfying for a master 2 internship. She alsosucceeded in programming in Matlab the scheme described in the article and to reproduce someinteresting simulations of the article. I have also to say that Phuong Le is a very nice and discreteperson and that she seems very motivated to pursue her master with a PhD Thesis.

As a conclusion, I recommend Ngoc Hoang Phuong Le for a PhD Thesis in applied mathematics.Please do not hesitate to contact me for further information.

I am writing in support of Le Ngoc Hoang Phuong application for a doctoralgrant in your instution.

Le Ngoc Hoang Phuong is a student in Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam) inthe Master M2 ”Applied Mathematics”. This master is a part of a collabora-tion program (France-Vietnam). It is delivered by di↵erent french universities(Orleans, Tours, Paris 13 and Ecole Polytechnique) with the same requirementsas the diploma in these universities. The courses are given both by Vietnameseand visiting French professors. The students are highly selected and, each year,the class consists in the best students in mathematics in South Vietnam (thereis a similar program in Hanoi).

I gave a course in this M2 in september 2016 entitled Optimization andoptimal control. I was impressed by the high level of the students in the class.According to me, the class is comparable to a very good mathematical M2 classin France and the main part of the class will be able to achieve a good PhD inmathematics.

During my stay in Ho Chi Minh City, I could discuss with Le Ngoc HoangPhuong. She is a serious student who attended to all my lectures and seemsmotivated. I think, and this is supported by her results, that Le Ngoc HoangPhuong has skills to be a good PhD student in mathematics. She got the mark16/20 at my exam. Her exam sheet was correct and is the result of a seriouswork.

I was impressed by her serious work (theoretical and numerics) and I have nodoubt that she is able to develop excellent research activities in the future. Forall these reasons, I hope that Le Ngoc Hoang Phuong will have the opportunityto continue her doctoral studies.
