Happy 40th Anniversary! The 40th anniversary of the Newton Parks & Recreation Department’s therapeutic recreation program is set to begin. We plan on commemorating this special anniver- sary on Wednesday May 9th by throwing a 1978 disco- themed Awards Ceremony. The summer of 2018 also marks the 40th anniversary of Camp Echo Bridge. The 40th reunion for Camp Echo Bridge is set for Thursday July 12th. Together, the program and camp have a rich history of athletes, campers, coaches, volunteers, staff members and community supporters that have touched our pro- gram throughout the years. Please save the above dates and know that we would be honored if you would come celebrate these momentous occasions with us. For those of you who have been with the program for three and four decades we will be soliciting your help to reach out to friends we haven’t seen in awhile. When the program and camp started Jimmy Carter was President, the median household income was $15,064 and the cost of a gallon of regular gas was $0.63. Mork & Mindy, Dallas and Taxi were on television and Grease and Animal House played at the cinema. The Walkman was the latest innovation and if you had one there was a good chance it was playing Night Fever and Stayin’ Alive by the Bee Gees. On behalf of the Newton Parks & Recreation Department we thank you for your long-standing support and for being an important part of our program’s history. We invite you to come celebrate with us in 2018. Happy 40th! Mark Kelly Volume 40, Issue 1 Winter Spring 2018 Setti D. Warren, Mayor Robert J. Newton Athletes Unlimited acknowledges Newton City Council’s recent honoring of

John & Karl O’Hara for all that they do for the community.

The O’Hara’s generosity of spirit has had a profound impact on the lives of hundreds of athletes with disabilities and their families. As a result of their tireless efforts, Paddy’s Shillelagh Shuffle Road Race, has raised over $600,000 over the last 16 years to support year-round recreation programs through Newton Athletes Unlimited.
