The University of Northwestern Ohio is excited to announce a new partnership with Mack Trucks and Volvo Trucks to be one of only three schools in the nation to offer the Diesel Advanced Technology Education (DATE) Program beginning in early 2019.

This strategic partnership will provide UNOH graduates who complete the DATE Program with job opportunities as highly skilled service technicians at Mack and Volvo dealerships. SUMMER QUARTER 2018

| ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

What fi rst attracted you to UNOH? At a young age I would follow my dad’s every move in the garage. I nev-er thought I could make a career out of what was then a hobby. I enrolled in Automotive Technology for four years in high school. During that time the teaching aide told me that both of her son’s attended UNOH, and that she would have a recruiter come visit our class if I was interested. I applied when the recruiter came and visited the school shortly after. After taking the tour of the school I was sold.

What do you remember most vividly about your time at UNOH? Automotive Alternative Fuels Tech-nology class was my favorite mem-ory of the school. There have been multiple times where the knowledge I’ve learned from those two sessions have been used in my career. I have conducted dynamometer tests with ethanol fuel, compressed natural gas, bio diesel, and I’ve also tested many hybrids/drive units.

What person at UNOH, staff , faculty or students, made the biggest im-pression on you? The instructor that impacted my time at UNOH the most was Tom Sypherd. His enthusiasm is contagious, and he was always engaged in all of the projects that were taking place in the shop. I know the kind words in his letter of recommendation helped me greatly with my interview at the start of my career.

What are some lessons you learned at UNOH that have served you well in your life after UNOH? The most valued lesson that I learned at UNOH was how to diagnose/trou-bleshoot engines and hybrid systems.

What was your career fi eld and fi rst job after graduation? My fi rst job after graduation was as a Dynamometer Technician for General Motors. I started in the Engine Validation department, where I ran mostly automat-ed durability tests on engines. I started as a contract employee in February 2010, and I became a direct General Motors Employee in December 2013.

Who is your current employer and what do you do? I still work in the Dynamometer Labora-tory for General Motors. However, I have since moved to the Engine Development department. In Engine Development I run an engine tilt stand. The tilt stand utilizes a dual axis tilt table and water brake dyno to simulate the stress an engine would experience under various g-force condi-tions. Our primary objective is to test the effect of the lubrication system under different angles/simulated g-forces.

How had your UNOH education benefi t-ed you professionally? My UNOH education helped me bridge the gap between being a Mechanic at home in my garage, and being a Techni-cian in a professional work environment.

What advice do you have for UNOH students or other alumni?Always keep a positive and professional attitude when interacting with customers and others in the work place. It will make you stand out from the rest. Also, take the extra time to get your Associates De-gree or greater. Many employers, General Motors included, have a two year degree or greater as a minimum requirement.

| UNOH CONGRATULATES VOLVO DEALER OF THE YEAR

The University of Northwestern Ohio extends congratulations to Board of Trustees Member and UNOH Supporter Todd Schaub, Dealer Principal of S&S Volvo of Lima, Ohio, for being named the 2017 Volvo Trucks North American Dealer of the Year!

Volvo Trucks annually recognizes a dealer of the year in North America, Canada, Mexico, and seven regions within the United States. S&S Volvo won the U.S. Northeast Region, and went on to win the award for North America as well. The annual award recognizes S&S Volvo and its employees for outstanding performance in a number of key areas, including new truck sales, market share, parts sales, customer satisfaction, dealer operating standards, franchise invest-ment and support for other dealers.

“S&S Volvo excelled in a strong market in 2017 and consistently exceeded their organizational goals while delivering outstanding service and support to Volvo Trucks customers,” says Bruce Kurtt, senior vice president of sales for Volvo Trucks North Amer-ica. “Dealer Principal Todd Schaub and the whole S&S Volvo team maintain a strong commitment to the success of their customers and are an excep-tional representation of the Volvo brand.”

S&S Volvo, in business for more than 20 years, greatly exceeded its sales objectives, nearly dou-bling their 2017 sales plan, and supported a wide range of customers and applications with products across Volvo’s Class 8 product lineup. They strongly utilize ASIST, Volvo’s online service management and communication platform, and nearly half of the technicians at S&S Volvo maintain Volvo Master Technician certification.

S&S Volvo and Todd Schaub have been huge supporters of the University of Northwestern Ohio for many years. 90% of his technician workforce is made up of UNOH graduates or current students.

Congratulations Todd Schaub & S&S Volvo!
