CELEBRATES WOODWASTE
JET FUEL. Alaska Airlines landed the first commercial flight powered in part by a new renewable fuel made of wood waste salvaged from private lands in Washington, Oregon, and Montana. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack greeted the passengers for flight AS-4 arriving from Seattle at Washington Reagan National Airport to highlight this breakthrough in bioenergy that supports jobs and rural economies by developing a sustainable bio-products industry in the Pacific Northwest utilizing wood harvest left-overs that would otherwise go to waste. A&M Forest Service and The Conservation Fund. Harvesting timber is still allowed, but sustainable forestry practices must be followed. The land, known as Bobcat Ridge, is in East Tex zs along the Neches River near Palestine. The conservation of this acreage will nearly double the amount of protected land within the boundaries of the Neches River National Wildlife Refuge. “The forested wetland habitat now permanently protected at Bobcat Ridge was deemed a top-tier ‘Priority 1 Site’ by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service,” said Julie Shackelford, Texas programs director for the Conservation Fund, in a written statement. “Many of these Priority 1 sites in Texas have been flooded or developed in the last 30 years. Being able to protect this habitat is a real victory.” That area is designated by the state as “ecologically significant.” About 43 percent of the known species of birds in Texas can be found

BOBCAT RIDGE CONSERVATION EASEMENT. About 7,000 acres of forest along what’s called Texas’ last wild river are now permanently off limits to development, thanks to a collaboration between the Texas
A&M Forest Service and The Conservation Fund. Harvesting timber is still allowed, but sustainable forestry practices must be followed. The land, known as Bobcat Ridge, is in East Tex zs along the Neches River near Palestine. The conservation of this acreage will nearly double the amount of protected land within the boundaries of the Neches River National Wildlife Refuge. “The forested wetland habitat now permanently protected at Bobcat Ridge was deemed a top-tier ‘Priority 1 Site’ by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service,” said Julie Shackelford, Texas programs director for the Conservation Fund, in a written statement. “Many of these Priority 1 sites in Texas have been flooded or developed in the last 30 years. Being able to protect this habitat is a real victory.” That area is designated by the state as “ecologically significant.” About 43 percent of the known species of birds in Texas can be found

A&M Forest Service and The Conservation
Fund has preserved approximately 7,000 acres of forestland in the
Pineywoods of East Texas. Known as Bobcat Ridge, the acreage
fronts the Neches River near Palestine and will almost double the
amount of land within the boundaries of the Neches River National
