The prayer today is appropriate given the wet foggy conditions we now have as we embrace winter, not to mention the temperature reading -3 degrees and the black ice in the courtyard. It is important at all times that students consider their health and safety in these conditions. Firstly, students must use the school crossing to travel across High Street at all times, and secondly, they should be wearing appropriate items of the school uniform for warmth outside the classroom. I congratulate all our students for their effort and manner in which they undertook their examinations. The College takes the examinations seriously and will continue to train our students on how to prepare, present and undertake these assessments. The trial examinations for our Year 12 and Unit 3 students are invaluable in ensuring students revise, prepare and apply their knowledge to remove some of the pressure when they have to revise for the whole year in October. Students are reminded that they should, at Year 12, be aiming to complete 25 hours of study and homework per week, including their study periods at school, as a recommendation from the VCAA. We know that this must be balanced with a good diet, rest and time for friends, family and recreation. Part-time jobs should be consuming no more than nine hours a week as students enter the final Semester of their secondary schooling. We wish all our students a great start for the commencement of the new Semester which brings changes to subjects, timetables and teachers for many of our students as they continue their educational journey at Sacred Heart. Kopanang Canticle of the Universe: Thursday 28 July at Sacred Heart College

The Canticle of the Universe is a world-wide travelling exhibit created by seventeen women of the Kopanang community in South Africa. This inspirational group of mothers, grandmothers and children have transformed their hardship within an impoverished community and ostracism of their AIDS/HIV diagnosis, into empowerment and skill building, resulting in medical, familial and spiritual resources for the community.

This unique exhibit features a collection of thirty-one striking wall hangings spanning over 30 metres in length. It not only unfolds the universe evolution story but also reveals and strengthens the spirit of the Kopanang community. This will be a community fundraising event.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL - LEARNING & TEACHING - Ms Debra McNaughton

It has been fabulous seeing the way in which our students have conducted themselves during the exam period. The results of the exams should provide the impetus for students to set personal learning goals for Semester Two, which begins after the long weekend. In some cases, students will find that they have different teachers as staffing changes occur for a number of reasons and the elective subjects will be different, but the fundamental structures remain the same. As always, it is our expectation that students will strive to achieve their very best. Many of our senior students completed the General Achievement Test (GAT) on Tuesday. This is the first of the externally-set and marked exams for 2016. The VCAA released the end of year exam timetable earlier this week. This can be accessed through this link: http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Pages/vce/exams/timetable.aspx#timetable It can be a great help if families take note of the dates of the exams that students will undertake, so that family activities can be planned around them allowing for as little disruption as possible to the students’ study and revision schedules. This week concludes a busy first Semester, with Semester Two commencing on Tuesday 14 June. Parents will receive an SMS reminding students to access SIMON to download their Semester Two timetable on Sunday 12 June. Please note that Tuesday 14 June will be Day 7 in our timetable cycle.

As we head on into second semester, it is hard to believe that we are halfway through the year. The cold weather and early darkness can make, particularly the senior students, us feel that there is no end to school work, but we all know that this is not the case. Year 12 are traditionally, by this stage in the year, beginning to feel tired and a little stressed. It is important from a wellbeing perspective that students make every attempt to take care of themselves during this busy time. The importance of a regular, manageable homework regimen cannot be overestimated, as this consolidates valuable information and skills and adds to their knowledge bank. This builds confidence and helps to relieve stress as knowledge becomes embedded, benefitting all subjects and contributing to the final result. Relieving stress by staying organised and calm allows for the development of beneficial sleep patterns, which aids concentration and understanding. Good nutrition and balancing social activities is vital at this stage. We are now entering the business end of Year 12, and it is important to understand that there is just over a term of secondary schooling left - a short time when the rest of your life is considered. This time can be difficult for students and parents, but please remember that every opportunity is available for students to do as well as they can if they are prepared to work hard, ask for help if needed and do what is asked of them by their teachers. From the number of students around the school working hard after hours, I think many certainly have this idea already. Please feel free to contact me at the College if you have queries regarding your student's wellbeing or are stressed about the year yourself. We are all in this together!

COLLEGE NEWS

MUSIC NOTES - Mr Terry Carrick

On Wednesday 15 June, the Music Department will present its annual Ensembles Concert. This concert will feature all ensembles at the College. This includes the String, Percussion, Guitar Ensembles, Piano Duets, Choir and Show Band. The concert will also feature classroom ensembles which include students from both Year 7 Music classes, both Year 8 Music classes, and both Units 1 and 3 VET Music classes. All students enrolled in one of these classes, will perform with their class. Students will be required for a brief but very important final rehearsal during the day in preparation for the evening’s concert – details of which will be emailed to them by early in the week. Students should wear full school Winter uniform (girls should wear stockings) and arrive no later than 6:45pm, so that the concert can start promptly at 7:00pm. A light supper will be available to all guests and performers in the Atrium, following the concert. Whilst we understand that students have commitments outside of school (eg. sports, work, etc.), we ask that you support the College in advising the organisation that your child is unable to attend that commitment on this date. I encourage all immediate and extended family and friends to attend this concert, which will be held in the Mary Moloney Theatre. The concert is a wonderful opportunity for the students to see and hear their peers perform and reflect upon their own performance skills. More information on this concert is available at http://tinyurl.com/shcensembles2016

Wheelchair Sports - Mr Brett Gardner, Health and PE Coordinator During the month of May all students in Years 7-9 Physical Education classes were lucky enough to have members of the Disability Sport and Recreation (DSR) program come to SHC and deliver the much anticipated wheelchair sports basketball program. Once again it was very well received by all students and staff and they are already looking forward to the challenge again next year. A special thank you to Melanie Adams from DSR and her amazing group of helpers who enthusiastically delivered the program to our students. We look forward to this association continuing for many years to come.

Celebrating Library, English and Humanities Week 23-27 May 2017

Our theme for the week was ‘Creating Transformative Learning Opportunities’ and activities, incursions and excursions were planned throughout the last two weeks. Year 7 students were entertained by guest author Mark Greenwood, with his Myths and Legends presentation in the Theatre. Mark is an author of several picture story books based upon Australian folklore surrounding the Gold Rush and bushrangers, the Dreamtime and World War I. Mark’s presentation involves showing students artefacts and photos that he uses for his writing inspiration. Our Year 9 students were once again amazed by the awesome talent of Luka Lesson. An award winning Slam Poet, Luka recited several of his poems to the whole year level that included song, rap and the accent of his Greek Grandmother. Our own Niamh Sutton was brave enough to get up and show her own talent in rapping in front of the year level. Twenty-five students, who had been nominated by their English teachers, were then privileged to work with Luka in a poetry work-shop. Look out for their poems in our College Magazine at the end of the year. Activities for all our students were provided in the library during the week. Students were encouraged to guess the names of teachers from photos taken in past decades, a task that proved to be extremely challenging. The Library and Learning Centre also launched our first MakerSpace for the year. The MakerSpace encourages students to be creative with craft, electronics and Lego. Craft involving paper folding of old books was particularly popular. MakerSpace will continue during Term 3 in the Library and Learning Centre at lunchtime on Thursdays and Fridays.

Year 7 Boys Football - David DeGrandi, Year 7 Football Coach

On Tuesday 7 June, our Year 7 Boys Football Squad journeyed to Sunbury to participate in the round-robin competition against Kyneton Secondary College and Mt Ridley College. Each of the two games were 2x20min halves and played in chilly and slightly greasy conditions. Over the course of the two matches all of the boys had the opportunity to play in every part of the ground – forward, midfield and defence – although due to the strong work of our onballers and forwards, the ball didn’t spend a great deal of time in our backline. Nevertheless, our defenders stuck to their task and maintained their self-discipline by holding their positions admirably. It was clear from the outset that Sacred Heart were the stronger and more skilful of the three teams and this very quickly translated into multiple scoring opportunities in both matches. Each of the boys should be congratulated in the manner in which they conducted themselves over the two games – it was a terrific reflection upon their sportsmanship that they continued to respect their opponents and shared the ball around. Game 1: Sacred Heart College 16 13 109 def Kyneton SC 0 0 0 Goals: Lincoln Roberts 4, Brody Brown 3, Flynn Coakley 2, Evan Davie, Tom Frith, Buckley Williams, Jake O’Meara, Max Webb, Spencer Paton, Sam Evans 1. Game 2: Sacred Heart College 17 8 110 def Mt Ridley College 0 1 1 Goals: Evan Davie 4, Zach Ryan 4, Jake O’Meara 3, Dom Bennington 2, Ethan Daw 2, Matthew Hanna, Spencer Paton 1. Best players for the day included Evan Davie, Dom Bennington, Max Webb, Lincoln Roberts, Spencer Paton and an overall team effort. Congratulations to all members of the squad for the manner in which they trained in the lead up to the fixture, and the way they presented themselves and represented Sacred Heart Col-lege on the day. We will now wait upon whether our success on Tuesday leads to qualification for the next stage of the competition. A big thank you to those who assisted on the day, including Harrison Hall, Zach De Grandi, Adam Donnelly (Year 11/8 – umpiring) and Mrs Joanne Holmes.

CABI – Carry A Book Initiative - Mrs Bronwyn Burke

Over the Semester Year 7 students have been building reading stamina, and engagement with books, through the wide reading program in the Catherine McAuley Library and Learn-ing Centre.

CABI, the Carry A Book Initiative, has been introduced to our Year 7-9 Homerooms. This initiative is the next stage and is to encourage students to have a book with them for those times when there is an option to read. This might occur between classes, just prior to a class commencing, or if they have finished a task and have the teachers’ permission to read.

CABI can also be implemented from home. If we have ready access to a good book we are all more likely to read. Travel-ling on the train or when waiting for an appointment for example are excellent times to have a good book on hand.

Students will be encouraged to get involved with CABI, the Carry A Book Initiative, at school and we seek your support to encourage your children to read widely and often. “Higher achieving students read 3 times more than lower achieving students”: Di Snowball, Literacy expert on ABC’s Revolution School broadcast Tuesday June 7, 2016.

The Catherine McAuley Library and Learning Centre is open at recess and lunch time for borrowing. Students will be able to borrow books for the holiday period.

Year 11Health and Human Development - Mr Brett Gardner

Art Therapy, Cunningham DAX Centre and

Melbourne Museum It is that time again when the Unit 1 Health classes are looking closely at issues that affect youth and our major focus is on mental health. This allows our staff and students to become involved in an Art Therapy session run down in Buckley with the very talented Maxine McKee and Troy Christmass. It is a great way to ‘clear

your head’ and become engrossed in ‘covering the white’ of your page. The time goes by so quickly and peacefully which for many of us is not always the case. We also attended our excursion to the Cunningham DAX Centre in Melbourne.

We were once again treated to an amazing display of Art, and also a couple of

inspiring presentations from staff who have gone, and are still going through,

their own mental health battles. It is truly an amazing experience listening to their

stories and there is certainly a very sombre feeling after they have finished. The

Melbourne Museum is running an exhibition on the human brain and mental

illness.

MOCK INTERVIEWS 2016 - Mrs Julie Matricardi-Old, Mock Interviews Coordinator

Our Year 10 students have just completed the second practical component of the Unit 1 VCE Industry and Enterprise subject by participating in the Mock Interview Program. In this fantastic work-ready program exclusive to Sacred Heart College, the students are given the opportunity to sign up for a Mock Job position provided by our wonderful professional parents and local business owners and to participate in a full circle program of application, preparation and job interview. Preparation for Mock Interviews included lessons on resume writing and putting together a letter of application, addressing the key selection criteria. Students are taught to research the business and prepare for potential questions they may be asked. Resumes are distributed to the interviewers for critiquing, and feedback is provided on areas for improvement. The students are allocated an appointment time where they need to attend either a local Kyneton business or a meeting room here at the College to sit a formal interview with their employer. Students are assessed on their punctuality, personal presentation, body language, knowledge of the business and response to questions as well as their attitude, demeanour and confidence. We believe programs such as these give our students fantastic real life preparation for the world of work and stand them in good stead for opportunities ahead as they begin to enter the workforce. The feedback from our employers is overwhelmingly positive and the students who complete the Mock Interview program feel they now have the ability to submit a quality application and attend an interview with confidence. Well done to the Year 10 students on their terrific input and enthusiasm.

Student Health - Ms Jalna Holmes, Health Care Coordinator

Has your child injured themselves outside of school hours?

OR

Is your child seeing a Medical Practioner about a health concern?

If the answer is “yes” then please be sure to let the College know, whether it be your child’s Homeroom Teacher,

Year Level Leader or the Health Care Coordinator. As a College we can implement a Health Support Plan to

ensure your child receives the best possible care while at school. IF WE DON’T KNOW, WE CAN’T HELP!

2015 GVBR Presentation - Mr Craig Darroch Extract of the Speech presented by the GVBR Team of 2015 at College Assembly last week.

Hi everyone, we are the Sacred Heart College Kyneton Great Victorian Bike Ride Team for 2015. We would like to tell you about our experience of the Great Vic. We completed the ride as a team of 30, 23 students and 7 leaders. On 28 November 2015, we left school and embarked on a 540km journey across the goldfields, riding from Ballarat to Bendigo. The nine day ride changed us all in a different way. Friendships where made and skills enhanced. A normal day consisted of getting up at 5.00am and dressing in our cycling gear. We would then pack up our tents and bags. By about 6am we would head over to breakfast, and load our bags onto a huge truck that would take them to the next campsite. By about 6:45 we would be back riding. We generally rode around 30kms to our first rest stop, where we would have a break and something to eat. Then we would ride another 30 or so kilometres before lunch. The final 20kms saw us into camp where we would grab a site, our bags then set up the tents. Then we had to shower and do our washing before being free to go down the street or just relax. We would have a briefing at 5:30 then a 6:00 dinner, and bed at 9:30pm. There were so many highlights, from the rest day in Bendigo where we all went and saw a movie to just chilling after setting up camp for the night. During the week we were hit with a lovely heat wave and we fought it classic SHC style with tons of ice-cream and the local swimming pools. Sacred Heart College Kyneton was the recipient of the 2015 Great Victorian Bike Ride RACV schools award. This was a great honour for all of us, and is reflective of the leaders’ work. On behalf of the whole team we would like to say a huge thankyou to Mr Gardner, Mrs Aldridge, Daryl Port, Adrian Hocking, Gabbie and Matt for making this experience one to never forget. Thankyou Mr Darroch - you put so much work into the ride, even with the terrible dad jokes you somehow always made riding and getting up way too early fun. This would have never been possible without your commitment to the Great Vic Program. Sacred Heart is lucky to have you.

We would once again like to thank our wonderful sponsors, who make this event possible.

CHECK OUT OUR INSIDES

SUNDAY 19 JUNE 1-3PM

Kyneton District Health is opening its doors on Sunday 19 June from 1-3pm. The Macedon Ranges community is invited to step inside to discover the best care services that are available in hospital and at home. Go behind the scenes to see what makes your local hospital and health service tick. You can also meet the board to find out how KDH operates, and to get the inside story on its future direction. Check out maternity services, dialysis, education, theatre, hospital, community nursing, the rehab garden and a whole lot more. Take the tour, do the quiz and go into the draw for the hamper.
