MessageFROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Every day I feel blessed and thankful when I cross the bridge at REINS. I hear from our families and volunteers on a daily basis about how just that very act of crossing the bridge and stepping on to our property brings peace, comfort and a smile to their faces. With the transition and passing of our former Board President, Bob Curtis, I look to the future of REINS through his eyes with the same devotion to gentle leadership. Bob led from the heart with a careful guidance and reverence to the importance of sound business acumen in the non-profit sector.

Our program touches 200 students and their families on a weekly basis as they visit our ranch. This is why I am so excited to announce that our capital project for 2019 is a reconstruction of the bridge. Under the guidance of our new Board President, Jim Betz of Betz Concrete Inc., the new bridge will break ground in 2019. Our bridge is the gateway to our life-changing program and will ensure safety and longevity for years to come.

NEW STUDENTSWelcome

Student SpotlightDiane Vivanco’s love of riding!Elizabeth Vivanco (Diane) came to REINS in June 2015 after suffering a stroke in 2014. Diane had owned and ridden horses in her youth, but it had been decades since she had spent any time with horses.

To our delight and surprise, Diane’s “muscle memory” came right back and she instantly had correct position and balance from her first ride at REINS. It has been a joy to see Diane communicate so effectively and share a wonderful connection with her horse. All of Diane’s balance challenges disappear when she is riding Chloe.

Recently, Diane and her husband Ed were so kind and generous in hosting the entire REINS Staff at their beautiful home for a delicious bar-b-que and summer swim. We greatly appreciate Ed and Diane and all they do for REINS. - Darcie Loescher, REINS Instructor

Hoedown HighlightsSaturday, October 6th, 2018REINS Country HoedownBigger and better than ever, the 22nd Annual REINS Country Hoedown provided an evening of fun for all ages. A big thank you to our Presenting Sponsor, The Donegan Burns Foundation for their continued support.

The Hoedown had a patriotic theme this year and recognized the military friends and families of REINS. The evening included a riding demonstration by siblings Noah and Hannah Gentry whose father has served in the military for 15 years. Another highlight was SSGT Scott Thorne’s riding exhibition on Konah, our Fjord/Percheron therapy horse. Spectators were in awe of the story of SSGT Thorne’s heroism and his purple heart.

This year the goal for the evening was to raise funds for a new bridge for REINS. The goal set for the evening was met and exceeded with the help of our sponsors and Text 2 Give participants. Construction for the bridge is scheduled for 2019.

We reached our Hoedown goal to support our new bridge project!

A Life of HonorRemembering Leif the Therapy HorseHow do I describe the best horse in the world? When it comes to Leif, finding the perfect words is tough. He simply did and gave so much for our program.

At REINS, we need horses with special characteristics. We need a horse that constantly denies their instinct to run, and is patient enough to carry a rider that sits off to one side or has an oxygen tank attached to their back. We need one who will be trusting enough to walk-on when his conscience says stop, and will walk next to a wheel chair or slowly approach a small child who is scared. One that has instinctual compassion and will even stick their head into a minivan when a child with Autism is melting down. We need one that is calm enough to stand in a TV news room studio, and that will also keep a soft eye on the trail when a giant bird flies at his face and he’s carrying a delicate rider. We witnessed Leif do all of these things over the years and so much more.

Leif was made for therapeutic riding. He was perfectly matched both mentally and physically for the job, a rare gift. With a willing heart and calm mind, Leif would give his everything for his riders. Countless riders at REINS started their love for riding on Leif’s back. He would instill confidence in his riders week after week. Leif was a devoted companion. He will be missed and remembered always.

Thank you for being our super star for over 15 years, Leif. You gave REINS the best years of your life.

Volunteer Spotlight Joon Holston

Joon started volunteering early this year when she wanted to add another after school activity. While she seemed shy and reserved at first, we have all watched Joon blossom into an outgoing, funny, and personable young lady! Joon encompasses the phrase “small but mighty.” She handles all of our horses with finesse – the perfect blend of strength and gentleness – and can even handle Konah, the biggest of them all! Joon has mastered the volunteer role so quickly that she is now my go-to volunteer to help out with showing new arrivals the ropes. She is an incredibly hard worker; in fact she rarely stops moving. She is caring and thoughtful with our students and willing to help out in any way we ask. REINS couldn’t do all we do without our volunteers and that is certainly true of Joon!
