MEETING REPORT Membership: We are pleased to welcome 4 new members - Jim and Sheila Gardner, Laurette Jeffaries and Zian Vermaak.

Finance: We now have 70 financial members who have renewed their subs. For the 2019/20 year. The Guild’s financial position remains strong..

Workshop and Equipment: New power supply droppers and some new power boards have been installed in the workshop from the celling above the lathes to improve access and workshop safety.

A new “Wish List” is on display in the workshop for members to write up your ideas for new equipment &/or improvements. These will be considered by the Committee in due course when next years budget and plan

is being prepared.

Monthly Critique: A wide range of wood work - carving, turning, scroll saw, jewellery, laminated work and a guitar - was on display this month. Derek Kerwood carried out the critique emphasising how

impressed he was by the improvement in the Tauranga Woodcrafters standard and in particular by the finishing. A key message was that it is all very well to make a beautiful piece, but the whole work will be let down unless the finishing (oiling, waxing, shellac, etc.) is also carefully

completed.

GROUP ACTIVITIESGroup One: Woodcarvers 2nd & 4th Monday of the month, 9.30 am to 3.00pm.

The Carver’s meetings are being attended by 8 - 10 members at each session during the month. Everyone has a range of projects underway - walking sticks, relief carvings, sculptures of animals, fish, and people plus abstract works using drift wood.

At the beginning of the month the carvers had a social lunch outing at the Village Ridge garden centre and then visited Kevin McCardell’s sculptural carving workshop on Cambridge Rd. (www.kevinmccardellsculptor.com). It is always inspiring to visit Kevin, and well recommended to those who have not done so. He gave us nearly 1 ½ hours of his

time talking about his work. One of the latest pieces on display is a 2m tall Humpback whale, made from Tasmanian Blackwood which has been cleverly used with the whiter shades of timber on the underside of fins and the belly and the darker on the top of the body.

Group Four: Woodturners Group 4 Hands on Turning - 1st Tuesday at 9:30am Group 4 Monthly Turners Meeting - 1st Tuesday at 1:30pm

Group 4 Hands on Turning - 4th Wednesday at 9.30am

Hands on turning sessions are very popular with all the Guild’s lathes being used while experienced turners are there to share their ideas with the less experienced.

Grant promoted the idea of having a ‘Monthly Project’ for the Group. The topic was scoops for August. This resulted in a full muster of scoops at our meeting. Each maker was asked to explain their inspiration and technique. The “Most effort” award was made to Roy who took away a bowl blank – and he has nominated next month’s

project: “ A plain bowl” up to 200mm (8” for those who still think in Imperial units) and no embellishment. This is a great chance to get back to basics and show off your skills.

Thanks to everyone who returned their survey questionnaire and to Mel for collating the results. The general theme we saw is that members are all looking for opportunities to learn and improve our skills – either from others in the club, via demonstrators, or occasional visits out. We will try to get the balance right. Feel free to put together a short demo of something you can share – either a gather around a lathe, demo new tools or techniques, or short talk with an appropriate video.

Group 6: Open Workshop 2nd and 4th Wed at 6.30pm, 2nd & 4th Sat at 9.30am.

Open Workshops continue to be very popular. New members keep arriving and people are working on a wide variety of projects. One of the latest is an electric guitar which is under construction.

Roy Tregilgas 027 640 3793

Group 7: Toymakers Anyone interested in making toys should come and join us on a Open Workshop day or evening meeting. Mike is happy to help you with whatever you want to tackle.

Mike Buck 574 4525 Group Five: Scroll Saw, Marquetry and Intarsia 1st and 3rd Wednesdays at 9.30am Approximately 14 members have been turning up to each of the scroll saw meetings during the month. This means that all the scroll saws are being used. People are sharing ideas and helping those working on projects.

At our August Guild meeting we were delighted to present Laureen Tubby and Jacob von Holzen with Service Awards. These were made on behalf of whole Guild to celebrate the commitment which Laureen and Jacob have both made to fostering the skills in Scroll saw, marquetry and intarsia work in the Bay of Plenty and across NZ.

Last Word: from Phil Hansen They say good judgment comes from experience but I have found my experience comes from bad judgment.

I cut it twice - and was still too short.

This is why every woodworker needs a fire place!
