PRESIDENT’S PAPERS It was my intention to follow on from my comments at the Executive and Guild Meeting about use and abuse of Guild equipment and basic hygiene in the toilet and kitchen. I find that Doug St. George and myself have been thinking along similar lines and Doug had in fact prepared an article for the newsletter prior to our meeting. I think he has summed up the situation quite succinctly. I would only add that I considered floating ping pong balls for target practice. I like to try and keep my comments here positive and am disappointed that I have to stray from this practice. The Carbatec/Sorby demonstration was obviously aimed at the sale of Sorby tools and certainly an impressive range was on display with specialist tools ably demonstrated by Chris Pouncey. I believe that sales were made approaching $3000 and that this was the best so far on the tour. Attendance was about 45 split fairly evenly between guild members and out of town visitors. We are happy to have hosted everybody and look forward to seeing you again and the NAW AGM this Saturday. Following is a copy of an e-mail sent to regional clubs and we hope for a good response. It will give you the program for the day also. Please don’t use the Guild gear for recycled timber and if you accidentally damage any gear, please report it to John Harrison.

Show. Could someone please undertake to expedite the updating of our Signs? Contact Stephanie.

Visit by Hauraki Club. 19th August. They will visit Supersaws in the morning and join our meeting in the afternoon. There is an invitation for 10 of our members to join them at Supersaws, ring George if interested.

DEMONSTRATION

John Harrison showed us how to use the modified Dust Collection system. This now has an extra chamber which collects most of the shavings and sawdust, before it passes through the blower. This will eliminate most blockages and make it much easier to empty.

John also explained the importance of having all parts of the system earthed, because dust and air can form an explosive mixture, which can be ignited by static electricity

Mike McCarthy demonstrated how to use the new Schepach Benchsaw. This is a German machine, well made and very versatile, yet very simple to use. It has a sliding table and wide fold-out top, so will easily handle large sheets of ply or mdf.

John Harrison then demonstrated the sledge and clamping system he has developed for the big Bandsaw. This makes it much safer to rip a small log.

The third demonstrator was Frazer Pengelly, who showed us the safe use of the new Buzzer/Planer.

There was keen interest as John Harrison set up the sledge for the big bandsaw.

CHILDRENS CLASSESThursday StudentsWell it's the end of another very busy school term for the Thursday Kids. This term we were kept busy with two groups of kids coming from "Gate Pa" & "Te Puke." These kids, as have all of the kids we have worked with, been a delight to teach. The program we put together this term meant that they tackled 8 different projects, which  included a Dolphin, Seagull Picture, a Horses Head, Circular Puzzle, Alan Ladder (nee Jacob), Spinning Top, Tool Box, and a Stool.

We finished off the term with the "Celebration Day" which is a fun day with activities like the Pop Guns, Ping Pong Catapults and Spinning top challenges. Lots of laughter is heard from both

the kids and adults, we were all then treated to a lovely lunch put on by the Social Workers. The day was completed with the presentation of all the things that they have made, plus a certificate and school bag for each child donated by the "Presbyterian Support Service".

Homeschool ClassParents choose to homeschool their children for many reasons, but often because the School system isn’t working for their youngsters. In some ways the Homeschool Class is quite like the Thursday Kids Class, but in other ways it is quite different.

We accept children from the age of 10 and start them on Scroll-saw projects. Those who show aptitude can then go on to simple Woodturning and some general Woodwork. As they advance, we encourage them to come up with ideas for their own projects, this can sometimes be challenging for us Tutors! Some of them come for a term, some for a year and a few are in their second year. A couple of our older students are 15 and doing quite advanced projects.

Like kids everywhere, some of them want to “run before they can walk.” We try to help them progress at a pace that they can manage, but without stifling their enthusiasm.

We work in collaboration with the parents and we ask that some parents are always on hand, to help supervise the youngsters.

Photos have been published with the parents permission.

Saul Nahi recently completed this box, a project that took imagination,

skill, persistence and a little help.

Asher Taylor has made a Woodpecker Door-knocker.

This involved use of the lathe, drill-press and bandsaw.

GROUP ACTIVITIES

Group One: Woodcarvers 2nd & 4th Mon of the month, 9.30 am – 3.00pm.

Group One commenced the new month with a meeting of 10 stalwarts. There was a good sprinkling of newly started projects under way. Bob has been very busy with the show in mind. His tiny free standing animals, along with his enthusiasm for his new scroll saw and its capabilities, and his expertise, did plenty to whet our appetites! Barwick and Tom have both decided that their next masterpieces would be ‘Owls” – It is early days yet. Alan has started several free-form sculptures out of camphor, while Stephanie put aside her carving chisels for the day, in favour of those for the lathe. Ivan, meanwhile did some more on his ‘Alpaca’ and also brought along a proto-type Spectacle- holder stand’, as a possible group project for the Show’s ‘Sale Table’

Please Note. Our Group One and their wives/partners annual get together is scheduled for Monday , July 31st. Our intention is to visit Thomas Hansen’s Wood Carving workshop, Pahoia, followed by lunch at the Villa Ridge Cafe and Garden Centre - ( Tauriko- side of Kevin McCardle’s Carving studio, Cambridge Rd.) Please be at the Guild rooms to car-pool at 9.15 am. Sharp! It is also recommended that we arm ourselves with both masks and ear-muffs! For further information, please contact either Barwick Harding – 544 9094 or Jean Crabtree at 576 9011.

Next Meetings – July 24th and August 14th. Jean Crabtree for Ivan Watchorn (07) 308 7914.

Group Two and Three: Woodturners Group Two and Three combined,  were on Duty for the Guild's  Monthly Meeting on Saturday, July, 15th and we wish to thank the Safety Guild Members, John Harrison, Mike McCarthy and Frazer Pengelly for Demonstrating the Safe use of the Guild machines.  John Harrison with the help sometimes from Mike McCarthy do a great job of keeping the machines in Tip Top order and of course we need the members to report anything that requires attention at "ALL TIMES."  Group Two and Three combined, thank them for being Guest Speakers for the Groups on  Duty.

The two Groups, Two and Three over the years, have grown smaller. The decline is due to the passing of our fellow Members.  To name some of them who come to mind, were  Stuart Bloxham, Richard Jones, Ralph Harding, Doug Duke, Syd Duncan and then we have others who haven't been at all well, such as Ian Scott, Lew Tubby, John Morris, Ron Buckle, Morry Lawton, Ian Dawkins, Warren Howie,.Rob Thomson, had problems with the dust factor. Alistiar Field went to the Men's Shed.  Jack Williams and Ian Clark were embarrassed financially and we hope that things have improved. There were others who aren't able to come for different reasons, so it is Thanks to our regular and Faithful who form our 'Fellowship."  Milan Bacica

After brief discussions on aspects of turning the team made pencil caddies and then lidded boxes mainly for end grain experience. In all cases the workmanship has been very good. Our main group 4 meeting of approx 23 members began by welcoming Brian Wandsborough to his second meeting. We moved on to our "show and tell" table along with our well supported monthly project display which was an item made using pine. The intention had been to use Radiata pine, but some of the gathering had stretched the rules to include other pines.. Grant Parker read out this list of possibilities: Black pine / MataiRed pine /RimuWhite pine /KahikateaBrown pine /MiroCelery pine /TanekahaYellow pine, Silver pineYellow Silver pineBog pine/Mountain pineHuon pine -from TasmaniaRadiata pine, Norfolk pine. Whatever, it was an impressive display in numbers and notable pieces.Carole Knowles then gave us a worthwhile demonstration on how she uses her "Beale System" to polish/finish her turned pieces. Using the 3 stage system she produced an impressive finish. We finished the day with a part showing of a Richard Raffan DVD "turning boxes". An impressive turner. Jim Sutherland 543 4829

Group Five: Scroll Saw, Marquetry and Intarsia 1st and 3rd Wednesdays at 9.30am

Editor’s CommentOF GOOD MANNERS AND RESPECTFUL BEHAVIOR" Doug St.George

It’s very frustrating when you go to use the bandsaw, to find that someone has hit a nail and it won’t cut properly - if you have an accident like that, with any of the gear, then please report it to our Maintenance man, John Harrison.

It is annoying to come to prepare afternoon tea in the kitchen, to find someone’s dirty cups need to be dealt with before you can start - we all signed an undertaking to clean up after ourselves.

It’s very annoying when you undertake to take away the contents of the shavings bin, to find that someone has dumped their food scraps in there - we are all expected to take our rubbish home with us.

It’s nauseating to go to the toilet, to find that the floor has been peed on - if you have developed a blind spot there, then please, do it sitting down!

It is quite delightful to come in to the workshop, to find that the floor is swept, the lathes are all clean, the gear is all in good working order, the tools have been put away and the kitchen and toilets are clean. When we leave it like that, we show respect and care for one another.
