We are very fortunate, and express our sincere thanks to Glenn for his generosity. The donated equipment includes a large bandsaw, sander, dust extraction unit, drop saw and grinder. We need members to volunteer to help with different show functions, and also to select some items if your best wood work from 2019 to put into the Show Exhibition. Our exhibition of members work was a credit to every member last year. We want you to make the same effort again this year to highlight to the public what our members can achieve. Workshop Layout Improvements. At the at the September monthly meeting I presented some concept planning we have been doing to improve the layout of the existing workshop. Some of the ideas are already being trialed with the relocation of the the lathes into a back-to- back arrangement and vertical power lead droppers. We will also begin a trial using plastic storage bins under the carving benches & clear out the large steel shelving units. MEETING REPORT Membership: There were no updates on any health concerns with members this month. Membership of the club stands at 77 people.

Finance: The Guild’s finances are in good shape and sufficient for club operations.

The committee noted that we are very fortunate to have received multiple donations of materials and tools from Bunning’s and income from helping at Bunning’s DIY workshops and tuition fees from the Thursday School groups. It is important to acknowledge that Bunnings have been extremely generous to the Guild. These income sources, together with members’ subscriptions and what we hope to earn from this years November Show, are all we have to sustain our workshop operations in 2019.

Equipment Issues. We are once again saddened to report we have damage to equipment in the workshop. This time it is to a grinder. Someone has applied too much pressure and damaged the surface of a grinding wheel and at the other end the ceramic wheel is out of balance. Please members - get advice and help from group leaders on how to use equipment properly and safely. Our funds are limited. Taking care with equipment ensures we all continue to get the best from our facilities.

November 2019 Show: Our plans for the show are proceeding apace. We have now closed off the list for members wanting to have a sales table at the show. We now need members to tell us what you will put onto our Exhibition table. We are also seeking volunteers to help with the full range of show activities - distributing promotional flyers, placing the street signs, working in the cafe, BBQ, front desk sales, hall setup and takedown.

Monthly Critique: There was a great collection of members work on the monthly show and tell table. Donna’s turning work was selected the pick of the day.

DEMONSTRATION Phil Hansen spoke at the September monthly meeting about woodworking which had inspired him during a trip to Canada, England, Denmark and Germany in May & June of this year. He concluded the presentation with some project ideas / challenges for members to consider for themselves. Amongst these were 3D German Shadow boxes, Nordic relief carving patterns, articulated swan toy with wooden body, neck, head and beak all connected via elastic cord, and a variation on the rocking horse.

GROUP ACTIVITIESGroup One: Woodcarvers 2nd & 4th Monday of the month, 9.30 am to 3.00pm.

The Carvers have been very busy with up to 16 people at the last 2 meetings. We have been working with a group of 4 children from Bethlehem Primary School helping them to carve two Totara posts which will be erected in a school garden. This has been an opportunity for us to teach children some of the skills of woodworking but also to impart the pleasure people can obtain from being creative. Ivan and Barwick have prepared & marked out the patterns for the final carvings

and Barwick has donated the wood.

This month also marked a milestone for Jean who has just completed a beautiful relief carving of a vine and flowers. She has mounted a mirror behind her piece of work which sets it off nicely.

Group Four: Woodturners Group 4 Hands on Turning - 1st Tuesday at 9:30am Group 4 Monthly Turners Meeting - 1st Tuesday at 1:30pm Group 4 Hands on Turning - 4th Wednesday at 9.30am

The hands-on sessions in the morning at each meeting has been followed in the afternoon by the review of members achievements on a common group project and definition of another for the next meeting. Greg Taylor 021 992 446

Group Five: Scroll Saw, Marquetry and Intarsia 1st and 3rd Wednesdays at 9.30am We had 15 people at our first meeting in September. We had a good day, even if the bad weather kept some of members away. All of the club's scroll saws were going plus 4 of our members own machines.

Frazer discussed his latest marquetry project at the monthly meeting. He mentioned that the boat shape in the design sketch was modified to make it more realistic after taking advice from Barwick - our former boat builder. It is often the case that the subtle adjustment of a detail which adds to a piece of work.

Group 6: Open Workshops 2nd and 4th Wed at 6.30pm, 2nd & 4th Sat at 9.30am (new finishing time on Saturdays is 3pm).

Our get together for the Adult Learning open day on Saturday 15th September was a real success. We had four people arrive, one joining on the day, the others were very interested. The biggest success was that we

had Turners, Carvers and Scrollsaw people all working alongside the usual Open Worksop crew. The atmosphere was great and a visitor even commented on this.

To me this is the way the Guild should be working. We can all learn from each other by being there together and maybe tackle something new. All categories can be intertwined for a final product producing wonderfull originality. All it takes is thinking outside the square. I would like this to carry on being the norm.

So for our Saturday Open Workshop meetings I am increasing the hours. In future we will start at the usual time of 9.30am and now go through to 3.00pm stopping for a lunch break around Noon. So bring your lunch. Of course when you come and go is your choice.

Roy Tregilgas 027 640 3793

Group 7: Toymakers Anyone interested in making toys should come and join us on a Open Workshop day or evening meeting. Mike is happy to help you with whatever you want to tackle. Mike Buck 574 4525

Thursday Students We have recently completed term 3 of the school year where we had all the children from Pukehina school attending. We invited Bunnings to come to our end of term function and the 2 ladies who came were very positive after seeing what the children had all achieved. No school has booked to come for the 4th term. So we will restart in the 1st term of 2020. Mike Buck 574 4525

Homeschool Students Our tutoring skills are being well tested this term, with up to three tutors at a time, away on overseas trips. It all adds to the fun. At this stage everyone has had a go at both Scroll-saw and Lathe work. The parents are as excited as the kids, when they take their projects home.

In Turning, we start them on a series of simple Spindle articles, a Top, a Mushroom, a Christmas Tree, an Egg-cup and little figures suitable for Christmas tree decorations. After that they go on to Bowls, Pens, lidded Boxes and whatever else they and we can think of.

2019 November Show

At this years show we will have Timberly, Treeworx, and Machinery and Power Tools all attending with their Trade Exhibits. This is also a great opportunity to get in touch with these companies before the show to discuss equipment, tools, consumables you want to buy. They may be able to have your item at the show and save you the cost of freight. Leith Gray and Neil Joynt are attending as our Guest Exhibitors and

Demonstrators. Their presentations in 2018 were very busy places & much appreciated. So get ready to be amazed.

We have closed off the register of members who want sales tables for the show. We now want you to tell us what items of work you will display in the 2019 Members Exhibition. Contact Phil Hansen. An email request has been sent to all members for volunteers to help with the full range of show activities: distributing promotional flyers; placing the street signs; working in the cafe; BBQ; front desk entry and raffle sales; hall setup and takedown. Please email Phil and confirm what, which days and what times you are willing to help please - [email protected]

Last Word: from Phil Hansen

One of the great European wood carvers was Tilman Riemenschneider who was active in Würzburg in Germany from 1483. He was a prolific and versatile sculptor of the transition period between late Gothic and Renaissance. He was considered to be a master in wood carving and

was one of the first sculptors of the 15th century who did not have all his figures painted. Prior to the 1490s, almost every sculpture had been painted in several layers by a different artist,

who often attracted more admiration than the sculptor.

One of Riemenschneider’s famous works is the altar piece at St Jacobs Church in Rothenburg. Carved in Linden wood, the complete work is 9m tall. It depicts "The

Last Supper” and considered unusual because Judas is standing in the centre. The focus is

on the religious

message and the clothing and facial

features are carved without

excessive detail.
