Greetings from Kerrie ...Student AchievementWell done Eve B - 3/4G, Harper W -3/4J, Lucinda C - 5/6L,Ruby P - 3/4B, Lani A - 3/4S,Contribution to the school fete Craft StallThis year, a community of crafters contributed to the craft stallat our school fete. The crafters met across the precedingyear at our OSHC facility and each other homes to makebeeswax wraps, produce bags, sew totes, knit, make candlesand toys. It has proved to be a great way for the crafters tomeet other parents and children and teach each other skills. Of special mention is the group of young crafters above. Eve,Ruby and Lucinda, made scrunchies; Harper and Lani, madeearrings. Their items were hugely popular and hot items atthe fete. There were also some other year 4 students whovolunteered on the stall on the day. As the crafters said ‘What they don’t make in money(compared to some of the other big item stalls), they make upin enthusiasm! Thank you crafters and well done Eve,Harper, Lucinda, Ruby and Lani. The ‘Crafters’ hope this willencourage other crafties out in our community both young andolder, for next year’s fete.

Classroom Helpers ProgramClassroom Helpers Program - Thursday 28 March 9.15am to

10.15am in the staff roomIf you would like to help in the classroom, we invite you to come along to our training session. Thesession will cover confidentiality, strategies to use when working with students in groups and oneto one, and will introduce you to some of the teaching aids used in class. Classroom helpers undertake a variety of tasks including hearing children read, assisting studentsto select their take home book for reading, supporting small group tasks, and laminating andlabelling resources. As helpers are working with students it is essential that school protocolsaround safety and confidentiality are clearly understood. It is also important for helpers tounderstand some of the language of learning that teachers use so that they can support studentspositively and with confidence. One of the actions that we need all visitors and classroom helpers to do once you haveregistered as a volunteer is to sign the ‘Visitors Book’ at the office and collect a badge onarrival at school. When you are leaving the school, please sign out and return your badge. This is to ensure that we know who is in the school at all times – for safety and emergencypurposes. To register, email [email protected] or call 9481 0009. Ross BennieAssistant Principal

Grade 5/6 Teams Stand Against BullyingThe 5/6 students have made a powerful and positive start to the year! As part of their Social andEmotional Learning, they have developed literacy around what exactly is and isn’t bullying. Theyhave come up with a range of different definitions for bullying – making sure they all include thekey words. They have worked hard on drafting anti-bullying pledges which will lead to the creationof a contract to be signed by all 5/6 students. The final draft of this pledge reads as follows:

“I pledge to help stop bullying. I make a commitment to treat all people with compassion andkindness. I respect everyone for who they are. I will have the strength and courage to not be abystander. I will speak out against bullying. It is my responsibility to help others who are being

bullied and report bullying to an adult.Bullying is never ok."

As well as this, the 5/6 students look forward to welcoming back ‘Project Rockit’ on the 12th ofMarch to run their UNITE workshop. The focus of this interactive session will be to providestrategies and scripts for students to use if they find themselves in confrontational situations. Thestrategies vary from what they can do or say if they are themselves the target; what they can do ifthey are a bystander, and how they can best show support for a friend (or even someone whomight not be a friend!). Students will also have opportunities to reflect on past behaviours, developempathy for others and be empowered to tackle future encounters with bullying.

Parent SupportDaily lessons in resilience

Resilience - by Michael GroseRecently, I saw a mother give a simple, yet profoundresilience lesson to her school-aged child, after he missed amuch-anticipated excursion due to poor behaviour at school.Replying to the child’s protests about teacher unfairness andhis over-reaction to missing out on a learning opportunity hismum simply replied, “Oh well!” Then she busied herself withother tasks. The child stunned by her reaction, shrugged andheaded off to complete his homework. Adult reactions matterIt’s in our reactions to children’s and young people’s every daymistakes, mess-ups, muck-ups and hurts where the reallessons in resilience lay.The lessons for this child were simple but profound. “Oh well”meant:

Stuff happensDon’t look for fault or blameKeep your perspectivePick yourself off and continue with what you weredoing

How to reactThe resilience lesson for this mother were equally asprofound. When a minor mishap with a child or teenageroccurs:

Match your response to the incidentStay calm and be positive

Don’t look for fault or blameRemember, stuff happens

Resilience lesson for parents – “Oh well”Every day there are opportunities for parents to give theirchildren lessons in resilience.A child misses being picked for a team that he had his heartset on joining. “Oh well. Let’s see how you go next time”When a boy experiences rejection in the playground atschool. “Oh well. You’ll find that some people don’t want to beyour friend.”When a teenage girl doesn’t get the mark she thinks shedeserves in an assignment. “Oh well. Sometimes we don’t getthe marks we think we deserve.”Match your response to the challenge to promote resilienceThere are times when “Oh well” won’t cut it. When a child isbullied he needs your continued support. When a student’s continuous efforts at improvement areconstantly met with criticism then you may need to act on hisbehalf and meet with a teacher. When a child always struggles to make the grade and is neverpicked for a team then you may need to help him makedifferent choices. These types of situations also present opportunities for dailylessons in resilience, but they require more parental supportand teaching. The resilience lessons learned are deeper and includeconcepts such as ‘things will eventually go you way,’ ‘thereare times when you need to seek help’ and ‘this too shallpass.’Promoting personal resilience focuses on helping kids copewith life’s hurts, disappointments and challenges in thepresent, while building strengths for the future.Daily lessons in resilience are everywhere. You just need tobe ready to make the most of these valuable lessons whenthey come your way.
