It was a huge success with most of the scheduled tasks being completed. I would like to acknowledge the outstanding contribution of Andrew Martin, father of William and Amelia, and Steve Kuluveovski, father of Abbey and Olivia. Both were at school from 8.30am- well before the rest of us turned up. They organised and set up all the equipment to ensure the retaining wall around the junior play equipment could be completed and the two of them worked on this task all day. Thanks also to Jenny Martin who organised and purchased the food and drinks and to Scott Taylor for his leadership of the working bee. The support of so many families who helped tidy-up the school grounds and tend to the scheduled projects, is the reason why our school grounds are so inviting for all of our students. Thank you all once again. Parent Expo Our first Parent Expo will be held tomorrow evening- September 3 rd . FATHER'S DAY STALL The Father’s Day Stall will be held on Friday 5th September. This year the organisers have sourced some fabulous presents for dads and grandfathers and all cost $7.00. If you are able to help out during the day, assisting with the setup and selling of the items - please contact Carolyn Fern 0425751320. REMINDERS

Please make sure you notify me by the end of term if your child / children will not be returning to Hartwell next year. This information is needed to assist with planning for 2015. You can do this by emailing or phoning the school, or by writing a note addressed to me. Thanks for your help with this matter.

We urgently need you to consider carefully whether you can assist by being a helper in the Good Food Shop on either a Wednesday or Friday. If so please complete the attached form and return it to the school office or phone the school office any day between 8.30 and 4.15pm. Without extra helpers we may not be able to keep this service running, which would be a shame. NOTICES RECENTLY SENT HOME

PE UPDATE

HARTWELL ATHLETICS SPIRIT AWARD Upon completion of our athletics event each year, an award is given to an individual or a group of competitors who have demonstrated the values of what Hartwell promotes during Physical Education lessons and sporting events. They have tried their best, had fun, supported their house and really had a go! Congratulations to Abbie (M3M) and Krish (M3F) on being nominated for the 2014 Athletics Spirit Award. At her first athletics carnival, Abbie competed in every track event on offer 80m hurdles, 100m, 200m, 800m and 1500m. She did not place in any of her races, but she tells me she was “determined to do her best in every event and just have fun. I don’t care if I come last!” Well done Abbie, you are a great role model to your peers. Krish was thrilled when his house Oberwyl won the House Aths and I just love Krish’s attitude to PE. Krish had chosen High Jump as his field event and he will not mind me saying his training was not going as well as he had hoped. I suggested maybe Krish try another event to which Krish replied: “Ms. Bayes, for weeks you have been telling us the athletics is about participation and having fun. High Jump is the most fun for me and this is what I want to do!” How could I argue with that! Well done Krish on your determination and positive attitude!

Year 6 Girls’ Tee Ball – EMR Finals Congratulations to the Year 6 Girls’ Interschool Tee Ball team on an outstanding performance at the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Finals. The top six girls’ teams out of 304 teams in our region played off for a spot in the State Finals. In blustery and wet conditions at Jells Park yesterday, the girls battled hard against a very strong Heany Park PS but were outclassed both in the field and at the plate. However, in true Hartwell spirit they bounced back hard and took the match right up to Serpell PS narrowly losing by two runs. Thank you to all of the parents for arranging to get your girls to the final. An enormous thank you to coach Nareen (Michaela’s mum) for coaching the team. The girls have trained every Friday morning for the last month under Nareen’s guidance and they have learnt an enormous amount about the game. Thanks to Grade 6 teacher Daphne Scoutas for accompanying and managing the team at the finals. Well done to: Amber, Chantelle, Chloe, Evie, Georgia, Hannah, Marnie, Michaela, Natasha, Teagan and Kayla.

Senior Hoop Time Basketball What a great day for Hartwell Basketball last Thursday, as thirty-five of our All Stars took the court in the Glen Iris District Day. Beginning the day with 13 minute games, you can imagine the frenetic pace with which games were played. Our Girls A team wanted to keep their supporters on the edge of their seats with two one point wins on the buzzer to begin the day! Girls B were a different story, getting off to flying starts in all of their games, in fact going through the rounds undefeated. Both of the boys’ teams were up against tough opposition with seesawing results which saw a bottleneck at the top of the ladder. After a nervous wait, all of the Hartwell teams won their way through to the semi-final play offs. Our Boys A faced a slick Camberwell Sth who were too strong on the day. The Boys B team also faced Cam Sth and again were outclassed. Our Girls A were narrowly beaten by Glen Iris in their semi. The Girls B Team however were the shining light, undefeated all day, they marched into the grand final where they outplayed Camberwell South right from the first tip off to cap off a great day for Hartwell. Sincere thanks to our coaches: Cathy Arundel, Aaron Smith (past Hartwellian), Brett Ramsay and Nick Holdsworth. They did an outstanding job coaching our teams. Thank you to all of the parents who came along to support the teams and also to the parents who scored all day for the teams. Good luck to our two Future Stars teams who are competing today in their competition!

Victorian Interschool Snow Sports Well done to Teagan (S6O), Sasha (S6H) and Riki (M3F) on their fine performances in the Victorian

Interschool Snow Sports at Mount Buller last week. After carrying the Hartwell Banner at the opening ceremony, they all competed in the Skier Cross and the Alpine Giant Slalom events. The conditions were perfect which made for some tough competition with over 100 competitors in each event. Well done Teagan, Sasha and Riki for flying the Hartwell flag in another interschool competition. Thanks to Toshi, Sam and John for taking on the team manager roles on the mountain.

Gymnastics Victoria Interschool Competition Best wishes to our Interschool Gymnastics team who will compete in the GV Interschool competition this Friday. The girls have been training hard during the week and we have had two Saturday afternoon sessions at BUGS gymnastics club with their coaches. Thank you to Belinda at BUGS for her support of the program. It promises to be an exciting day of gymnastics!

SSV Interschool Golf Good luck to Emma Boyd (S5G) and Zach Kelly (S5G) who will play a round of golf in the SSV Interschool comp next Monday at Box Hill Golf Club. Go Hartwell. Have a great week
