ACTIVITIES IN RECENT MONTHS

After the election of the new Board and the new President Juergen Koeppel, Eumabois

has started to follow the guidelines identified at the General Assembly held last

September in Luzern, Switzerland.

Inside the organization, some administration tasks have been optimized to improve

efficiency both on the economic side and in terms of deployed effort. In addition, a

“Code of Conduct” is being drafted, which will be a vademecum for the next meetings

under the Eumabois brand.

The strength and representativeness of an association are based on the message that the

association itself transfers to its stakeholders. In this respect, we will soon achieve a

better definition of the Eumabois mission, consequently improving the identification of

members with the Federation.

In the exhibition area, we are carrying on major initiatives to collect information for the

evaluation of international exhibitions directly from exhibitors; the volume of information

keeps growing and the biennial period of data collection will close in September.

Eumabois is attending Ligna (May 22-26) in the area dedicated to international

associations and trade fair organizations.

In other areas, we organized the first meeting with the world’s leading woodworking

machinery and tools manufacturers, in order to understand whether it’s possible to

improve the quality of data and industry-specific economic trends. Economic studies so

far available to “industry stakeholders” are largely incomplete and such gap must be

filled with the support of manufacturers. The project is in its infancy and shall be

developed in the coming months.

One final remark about the technical works for the harmonization of safety standards

at international level. The Luzern Assembly explicitly expressed the need for Eumabois

to have a strong voice within the European Union; the next meetings will be focused on

this topic.

from the federation

The General Assembly approved the exhibition calendar for 2017, including all the events that will be sponsored by

Eumabois, the European Federation of woodworking technology, tools and accessories manufacturers.

Exhibitions are one of the key topics on the federation’s agenda. Constantly committed to limiting the proliferation of events

that only cause a waste of resources for companies, the organization selects and supports exhibitions that guarantee

specific standards to exhibitors and visitors, representing an effective and tangible reference in the respective world

region.

AS OF JANUARY 1ST, 2017, MACHINING CENTERS

HAVE A SPECIFIC CUSTOMS CODE

Upon provision by the European Commission, starting from January 1st, 2017, “machining centers” are included in the Combined Nomenclature (CN). In customs and statistic documents, as well as in many trade documents, machinery manufacturers shall indicate specific codes, often referred to as goods code, customs tariff code, statistics code or HS code (CN in Europe). The new code 8465 20 00: machining centers has been introduced. In the future, this code will enable to measure the trade flows of this type of machines. As a result, another unknown variable has been eliminated from the jungle of data about woodworking machinery. Definition For the purposes of subheading 8465.20, the term “machining centers” applies only to machine-tools for working wood, cork, bone, hard rubber, hard plastics or similar hard materials, which can carry out different types of machining operations by automatic tool change from a magazine or the like in conformity with a machining programme. Context: modifications to goods/customs codes As the first six goods/customs codes authorities were unified in 1988 (under the so-called “Harmonised System””), any modification is possible only if the WCO implements the necessary changes. This is normally done on a five-year basis. The HS 2012 system effective until today has been replaced by HS 2017 as of January 1st, 2017. The purpose of such update is to implement modifications into international trade, whether its technical innovations or modified trade volumes for specific types of goods.

“2016 Forum on the Future of Forest Industry” held by the

Association of Forest Industry Businessmen (ORSİAD) became a

platform for discussing the problems and future scenarios

for the industry, and featured important statements. In its

second anniversary this year, the forum gathered the

manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers in the industry, offering

them a platform to resolve all issues in the industry.

AİMSAD was among the participants of the forum. Besides

the speeches of the participants, Arif Onur Kaçak, representing

AİMSAD, brought a different perspective to the forum with his

following speech which highlighted important issues.

Arif Onur KAÇAK:I would like to greet you on behalf of AİMSAD.

In 2009, the total exports in our industry was only 9 million USD.

For all woodworking machinery, this figure rose to 83 million USD

by the end of 2014. The most important growth in our

exports was in 2013 with 94 million USD. After 2015, our

exports fell to 65 million USD. We cannot obtain the

manufacturing figures for the whole machinery industry

from Turkish Statistical Insitution. We only make a guess

and we assume that we manufactured machinery worth of

165 million USD by the end of last year. When we assume

our imports were 96 million USD, we see that an approximately

160 million USD was achieved in exports. On the other hand,

when we look at the official figures for 8 months of 2016, our

exports were 47 million USD, and imports were 56 million USD.

With this course, we believe we will achieve 65-70 million

USD in exports although we have lost Russia as one of our

largest markets. One of the most interesting aspects here is

that in our exports.

Technology increasingly determines the course for companies’ competitiveness. The technological evolution applied to the industrialization of wood products is continuous. More flexible machines and processes achieve rapid improvement in productivity and quality responding to customization, a trend reinforced in recent times. More than 120 exhibitors representing more than 350 domestic and foreign brands will be present at FITECMA – International Fair of Wood & Technology – 13th edition, to be held from June 13th to 17th, 2017, at Centro Costa Salguero, in Buenos Aires City, making it the largest and most varied “shop window” for machines, equipment, tools, supplies and state-of-the-art products and services for the wood and furniture industry. Specific elements for construction in wood and technology applied for thermal energy generation with forest biomass for industrial and residential use will complete a comprehensive offer for each of the sectors involved in the wood-furniture value chain. The availability of funding lines generated as of July, 2016 with the sanction of Act No. 27,264 “Production Recovery Program”, better known as “SME Act”, creates favorable conditions in order that industry companies may face a process of technological advancement to achieve improvement in production, quality and competitiveness of their products. As examples of this we can find the “Line 400” of Banco Nación (Bank of the Argentine Nation) and Banco Provincia (Bank of the Province of Buenos Aires) with credits for production investment plus working capital, covering 100 per cent for the purchase of new capital goods; “FONDEAR” financing up to 80 per cent of the total project; the “Tax Rebate Scheme” given by different banks with tax rebates; “FONOPYME” covering up to 70 per cent of project; “PRODEPRO” with rate rebate for credits given by BICE (Bank of Investment and Foreign Trade).

LISDEREVMASH: BENEFIT FROM GROWING BUSINESS ACTIVITY!

LISDEREVMASH exhibition is considered to be the most important event of the woodworking industry in Ukraine. It

takes place annually in Kyiv and serves as a bridge to the Ukrainian market for foreign companies willing to enter it. On the

other hand, it remains the best business platform for Ukrainian specialists to get acquainted with the recent developments

of the world known equipment manufacturers. This year’s LISDEREVMASH will be held on September 26-29.

In 2016 the leading role of LISDEREVMASH in Ukraine was proven by the significant increase in all key figures of the

event. It reflected a growing business activity on the domestic woodworking market. As compared to previous years

the number of exhibitors grew by 48% and the exhibition space was 46% larger. Along with that the number of

foreign participants doubled in comparison to 2015, and the share of LISDEREVMASH visitors, coming from abroad, was

also noticeably bigger.

Generally, in 2016 LISDEREVMASH was attended by nearly 8,800 visitors from all over Ukraine and CIS countries. For

many years it remains highly attended and is treated as a must see event for specialists, working in the field of forestry,

woodworking and furniture production. And, what is more, LISDEREVMASH is not only about looking but about purchasing

equipment. Owing to its saturated and diverse exposition the event gives a solution for the complete production cycle

in wood processing. Four thematic sections of LISDEREVMASH cover such categories as machines and equipment for

harvesting, primary and secondary wood processing, furniture production technologies, materials and tools, waste wood

recycling, as well as solid biofuel heat generators.

For many years LISDEREVMASH plays an important part for companies from abroad and serves as the best way

to enter domestic woodworking industry. As equipment manufacturers look for new markets with the bigger potential

to grow, more and more of them pay their attention to Ukraine. It does make sense, taking into account new trends. In

2015 the Ukrainian parliament slapped a ban on an export of solid wood in order to provide domestic companies with raw

wood, create higher added value for export goods, and, finally, give impetus to the rise of the national woodworking

industry. This resulted in the need for technical upgrading of local forest districts and wood product manufacturers, and

higher interest in equipment and machines.

Alongside wood processing there is one more section of LISDEREVMASH that is constantly growing for the past few

years. Biofuel exposition WoodEnergy features the latest developments in waste wood recycling, pellets and briquettes

production, and solid biofuel heat generators, giving a chance for woodworking plants and private households to reduce

their spending on natural gas.

To sum up, there is a number of factors that indicate the growing business activity in different areas of Ukrainian

woodworking industry and make this market more and more attractive. And LISDEREVMASH remains the most

convenient way to enter it.

IFMAC: QUALITY INDONESIAN FURNITURE RISES IN GLOBAL DEMAND

Indonesian furniture and handicraft industry is characterised by an environmentally friendly product with unique

characteristics produced by skilled hands and quality craftsmanship. The industry has been traditionally labour-

intensive and supported by commodity-based resources. Rattan was the luxury and iconic product in Europe, highly

sought after by the upper and middle class community who are inclined to furnish their homes with furniture made from

natural rattan.

The main export destinations Indonesian furniture and handicraft are the United States, Japan, Britain, the Netherlands,

Germany, France, Australia, Belgium, South Korea, Italy, Taiwan, United Arab Emirates etc. They liked the furniture and

handicrafts from Indonesia because they have characteristics that are very prominent, with a blend of environmentally

friendly materials, cultural diversity, produced with high skills from qualified craftsmen depicting their cultural diversity, as

well as infused with design innovations that are relatively advanced. These qualities create Indonesian products that are

unique, innovative with international quality standards. That makes the products of Indonesia recognizably and

uniquely different from products from other countries and industry competitors.

With the abundant availability of raw materials, skilled human resources in large quantities and more conducive investment

climate, the industry’s target in boosting export growth of furniture and handicraft products to reach $5 billion worth within

the next five years should be achieved. However, the facts on the ground show that the industry is not strong. The world’s

total furniture exports in 2015 amounted to US $134 billion - this is a significant growth from the previous year that

recorded US$124 billion. Meanwhile, Indonesia’s furniture exports in 2015 only reached US $1.9 billion. This puts

Indonesia’s market position far below Vietnam’s, where its furniture export capabilities was able to achieve an export value

of more than US$6 billion.

One of the obstacles facing the domestic furniture industry is that technological support in terms of tools and machinery use

across local businesses for national production have not been evenly distributed. Currently tools or machinery used are not

of sophisticated level. Therefore, it is necessary to further develop production processes with better technology to

ensure that manufacturers can produce more quickly and efficiently, so that they can compete with foreign manufacturers.

Indonesia is a highly active and strategic market that pushes technological advancements to shape further

development of its furniture manufacturing and woodworking industry. International machinery producers from Europe and

other parts of the world look forward to partner local companies to boost domestic manufacturing capabilities and provide

access for Indonesian companies to enter export markets.

According to Mr. Pierro Borroni from ACIMALL, “Indonesia is an important market and IFMAC provides solid business

prospects for Italian and other international companies to reach newer buyers and sell more high-technology

machines across Asia.” IFMAC and WOODMAC together is a complete furniture manufacturing woodworking exhibition that

presents and meet information needs and promote technological advancement in Indonesia’s furniture industry. For

example, in the area of furniture components, product suppliers can foster innovation and creativity amongst national

furniture and handicraft producers in order to produce superior products that have added value optimal.

From the exhibition, good interactions between the manufacturers and suppliers were established to introduce

appropriate equipment that could ultimately improve the performance of the furniture industry and handicraft Indonesia.

This exhibition is the right arena for businesses of furniture machinery industry to gather and conduct business

transactions. Not only for the machinery side, but also accessories, furniture components and other latest technologies.

Such exhibitions are timely promotional events to bring in new technology to the industry given that almost all of

the machines used in Indonesia’s furniture and handicraft businesses have been in operation for more than 20 years. Given

the long operational use, certainly the level of efficiency and productivity had lagged behind as compared to the current

generation of machines. Through the rejuvenation of the production machinery, furniture and handicraft industries can

boost productivity without adding labour. IFMAC & WOODMAC will return for its 6th edition this year from 27 to 30

September 2017.

WOOD-TEC 2017 WILL FEATURE WOOD-TEC ARENA AND AN EXHIBIT

COMPETITION

The WOOD-TEC International Fair for Wood Processing and Furniture Industry is the most important fair for the

woodworking and furniture industries in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Its next edition will be held at the Brno

Exhibition Centre from 31 October to 3 November 2017.

WOOD-TEC will be a prestigious fair this year, too. According to the information received by the organizers at meetings with

exhibitors, obviously very frequently are represented the two main nomenclature groups – wood processing machines and

components for furniture production.

The sidelineprogram of this year's WOOD-TEC will feature again the WOOD-TEC ARENA as a major space for most

parts of the sidelineprogramme. In 2015, it appeared for the first time and met with a great acclaim from the visitors,

who appreciated mainly the opportunity to learn about news from the industry and combine a visit to the exhibition with

education. Exhibitors appreciated quality background facilities and the conceptual design of the commercial

presentation system.

An Exhibit Competition will have its first run in 2017. Its aim is to give exhibitors the opportunity to highlight

advanced exhibits, news and interesting items. The competition is being prepared with partners from professional

associations of the wood processing industry and universities.

XYLEXPO 2018:

THE DATES FOR THE NEXT EDITION ARE SET

For more information: www.xylexpo.com

The dates announced at the end of the previous editions have now been confirmed for the next Xylexpo, the biennial

international exhibition of woodworking technology and furniture industry supplies, celebrating its 26th edition. The event

will take place in the Fieramilano-Rho fairgrounds, from Tuesday 8 to Saturday 12 May 2018. The location remains the

same, reaffirming the collaboration between the city of Milan and the exhibition, which dates back to the origins of the trade

fair in 1968, as much as fifty years ago! The 50th anniversary is a major milestone that will be properly celebrated.

The timeframe of the exhibition has also been confirmed, spanning five days as requested by a vast majority of exhibitors,

who want to have enough time to spend with their partners and customers. Such request has become even stronger

following the excellent results of the past edition, where the leading brands of woodworking technology achieved record

levels of order acquisitions during an international exhibition.

“We have all got down to work for the next edition with fresh enthusiasm”, said Lorenzo Primultini, president of the

exhibition and Acimall, the association of Italian manufacturers directly involved in the organization of Xylexpo. “Our recent

story demonstrates that Xylexpo has a clear role and position in the international exhibition calendar. It is the top showcase

for panel processing technology, this is an undisputable vocation that drives us, as organizers, to pay utmost attention to all

territories where woodworking technology is applied. To illustrate the different expressions of our industry, we are

developing a few significant initiatives”.

The industry is experiencing a sort of “second youth”, with several regions around the world going back to economic

situations similar to the pre-crisis period. “We are confident that Xylexpo’s fiftieth anniversary will be combined with an

excellent seasons for the global markets”, added Dario Corbetta, director of Xylexpo. “Current figures indicate a positive

trend of the Italian market, which is not only an industry leader offering world-class technology, but also a “consumption

market” that draws the attention of all global vendors”.

“The widespread return to pre-crisis order and revenue levels – Corbetta continued – will be a powerful driver for exhibitors,

who will bring their best technology to Milan to match the demand of a more and more dynamic global market. This is an

opportunity to show your skills and capacity in one of the most mature and stimulating user markets, where you can do

“good business”, as well as meet and discuss with many important and popular brands from all over the world. We are not

talking only about design, but also high-quality mass production for the world’s giants of furniture retail and trade".

So, Xylexpo is an exhibition that always gives answers to exhibitors and visitors, from the buyers of big brands looking for

technology to support high-volume production, up to handicraft businesses willing to upgrade the technological standards of

their “workshop”.

A long tour of meetings and press conferences will start soon to illustrate the highlights of the next edition to all industry

actors.
