President’s Report

I hope you have all had an opportunity to read the information board on the Minoru Artist in Residence. We have engaged in a wonderful opportunity to document the history of Minoru Place and the people who have contributed over the years to make Minoru a special place. As we get closer to the opening and move to our new home in 2018, we felt it important to have a legacy piece to bring with us, and to share with the public. The Minoru Public Art Project is a yearlong undertaking in partnership with the City of Richmond. The artist, Catrina Longmuir, was chosen by a panel from Richmond Public Art and has begun her work here at the Centre. Many of you have already shared your stories, and feelings about Minoru with Catrina, and recently we were treated to a fabulous sample of the work Catrina has done in the past as a documentary film producer and her vision for this project. I encourage you to take a moment and visit the web site https://minorulegacystories.wordpress.com to see the progress and watch the information board for updates and ways you can become involved. Catrina is happy to meet with members, and hear what has made Minoru a special home away from home for you. Her work will continue throughout 2017, and we look forward to the final piece. If you missed the Artist Meet and Greet in early April, and wish for advanced notice of the next opportunity, please leave your name with the front desk staff and you will be contacted.

Seniors Services

Our new facility comes to life as Minoru Centre for Active Living. The new Minoru Centre for Active Living (formerly known as Minoru Complex) will open for service in Spring 2018. The new name for the multipurpose complex was officially endorsed by Richmond City Council in early April.

The use of ‘Minoru’ in the name retains a connection to all of the facilities that the facility replaces and with its location within Minoru Park. The new facility offers a variety of activities and Active Living is a term that is inclusive of all of them. Find out more about this project at www.yourminoru.ca.

With spring finally in the air here are some upcoming events to shake off your hibernation:

Move for Health Week May 5-12, Richmond is again participating in Move for Health Day ex-panding it into a weeklong celebration. Move for Health Day is an international event created in 2002 by the World Health Organization to promote physical activity. This year at Minoru Place try an outdoor workout, Nordic poling, Chair Yoga with Meditation or Zumba!

Seniors Week June 5-11, 2017 Celebrated annually in June in BC, Alberta, Nova Scotia and the Northwest Territories, Seniors Week recognizes and commends the contributions seniors bring to their community. Programs and events are held the first week in June throughout Richmond targeted to seniors and their families. More details for both events to follow.

“Summer, after all, is a time when wonderful things can happen to quiet people. For those few months, you’re not required to be who everyone thinks you are, and that cut-grass smell in the air and the chance to dive into the deep end of a pool give you a courage you don’t have the rest of the year. You can be grateful and easy, with no eyes on you, and no past. Summer just opens the door and lets you out.” From the Author Deb Caletti.

Cribbage Group at Minoru

Twelve members playing crib on Saturday April 22, 2017

witnessed an extremely rare occurrence. Ben Brizee

was playing against Rick Hamel and was dealt a Jack

and 3 Fives. The Jack was a different suit than the Fives

in his hand. When Rick cut the deck, it was the other

Five that turned up for Ben. This gave Ben a ‘29 Hand’,

the best you can score in Cribbage, a perfect hand.

Congratulations to Ben on this stroke of luck and skill. It

was really fun to see this event and the huge smile on

Ben’s face.
