Alarm CompaniesFollowing the continuing trend for burglaries fromoutbuildings, we have recently received a numberof enquiries regarding approved alarmcompanieswhich we referred to our Crime RiskManagers in Worcester. This is the advice that hascome from them which is clear and should answermost of your queries:"As far as alarm companies are concerned, we pointpeople in the direction of the NSI and SSAIB whichare alarm inspectorates. Membership for eachcompany is voluntary, but to fit a policeresponsealarm, ACPO (Association of Chief Police Officers)insist that a company belongs to one of theseorganisations. Both web sites have search engines, put in yourpost code and it will bring up a list of companies inthe area".http://www.nsi.org.uk http://www.ssaib.org

ScamsA local resident had a call from someone called Robon 0208 8193941 saying that she had not claimed14,000 Euros (£12,000) in the Euro Lottery. Sheknew this was not possible as she had not enteredthe Lottery, however he told her that she couldclaim the money if she took a photo ID, mobilephone and £500 cash to Western Union, Eign Gate,Hereford HR4 0AB. By filling in a ‘Sending Form’and phoning the above number he would then guideher through. When he told her that she should fillthe country to send the £500 to as India, alarm bellsrang. She consulted the Manager asking if it was ascam. He said, “Yes, it happens frequently”. Aclose shave and thankfully unsuccessful BEWARE!! Trading Standards and the Policeshould be notified immediately. While using the Internet, another resident noticedan icon of a Policeman appear on the screen saying“Stop! Your computer has been blocked by thePCEU of the Metropolitan Police”. To get yourcomputer unblocked you are required to send £100by UCASH Payment to PO Box 38451.Fortunately the resident did not carry on and hasbeen able to disarm it by using some helpful advicevia Google.Best wishesFionaGolden Valley & Hereford Rural South LocalPolicing TeamsPC 2176 Wendy Powell 07811 131525CSO 6173 Fiona Witcher 07779 141232CSO 6366 James Cooke 07779 141223CSO 6482 Katie Middleton 07779 141223Email [email protected]

Non emergency number 101Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor,As part of my duties as Show Secretary for theKing's Thorn and Little Birch Horticultural Show,I have been putting up posters for the event. It isgreat that we have the telegraph poles around to usefor this. It informs people of what is coming up andthat is always good to know. What we do not want to know is that there was aCelidh last April and what happened for the Jubilee.

I have been taking these posters down as I go roundwith mine, but I wonder now if people are so usedto seeing the old posters, that they will take nonotice of the new ones.Last year I made sure our posters were down withina month of the event. Please can everyone do this?Apart from getting stained and tatty, the old oneswill detract from any new information that comesalong.I know there are many who agree with me on this,so please, if you put up a poster, also take it downagain!Thank you, Brian and Gillian Clouder

Little Birch Parish FieldIn the Little Birch Parish Plan questionnaire 20% ofthe people who responded indicated they would liketo be involved in an environmental initiative tocreate a wildlife area. This is your opportunity!!You will be aware that the Diamond Jubilee treeand seat are now located on Parish Field. It wasdecided by the Jubilee committee that some of themoney left over from the celebrations should beused to help create a wildlife area in the field whichwill be accessible to the community. This would bea Diamond Jubilee project. Preparatory work isnecessary to the surface and then further work tofinally prepare and sow with wild grass and flowermix suitable to the location. That is where youcome in. Learn to be a better – and safer driver.Hereford Advanced Motorists' (HAM) have acampaign to help everyone do just that. There are regular courses, run by its volunteerobservers for those wanting to improve their drivingskills and who may wish to become AdvancedDrivers. These 'Skill for Life' courses are run overthree weekly evenings, and in parallel with practical

driving advice, in your own car. Based around a"System of Car Control" it improves driving byreinforcing things like correct steering, gear choice, cornering and overtaking techniques, and of course, attitude and hazard awareness. The technique takesa methodical approach to driving hazards whichleaves nothing to chance, increasing your safety andgiving you more time to react. The significant advantage of each course is thatdrivers are able to begin putting the theory intopractice immediately on the way home from yourvery first evening!HAM has a team of qualified and highlyexperienced drivers who will coach, guide andmentor you. There is no limit on the number ofpreparation drives or the time taken, and sessionsare at your mutual convenience. The next coursebegins on 11th October at Much Birch CommunityHall. For more information call Mary Bevan, GroupContact, on 01874 712267 or apply online atwww.advancedmotoristhereford.org

free Big Jubilee Lunch celebration, but we needn’thave worried as more and more tables were laid upand more and more plates of delicious food werebrought in, and that was the beginning of awonderful afternoon of fun and friendship for 200.The children started off the day by all paradingaround the hall in their royal robes likeprofessionals and when everyone had had their fillfrom the heaving tables of food, there was time forthe chocaBottle Tombola, six prize Chinese Raffleand Jubilee Quiz inside, and children’s activities intwo marquees [next to the bar marquee that ran outof Pimms before the end!]. The Thames Pageantwas set up in the Meeting Room so nothing wasmissed.Later in the afternoon, Derek Hill’s winning ticketwas dug from the hat for the Tree Planting. A betterperson could not have been found as the tradition ofthe Queen with one small scoop of soil wasforgotten and several shovel fulls later, and lots offirming the ground all around, the tree was well andtruly planted! The under planting finished, the twoMemory Capsules were buried and we all wentback inside for a cup of tea to go with the deliciousCelebration Cakes. There were many people involved, but we feel wemust thank all the residents of Holly Bush Lane, under Coline and Brenda’s guidance for the highquality packed Tombola, MBWI for running theRaffle and the very elegant ladies from Mums andTots for the activities. The feeling in the hall was wonderful and we hopeeveryone went home with a warm feeling ofcommunity and friendship, diamond memories ofthe Jubilee, and not too tipsy [“The bar was socheap you could get drunk for under £5!”, washeard to be uttered].Sinatra sang, “New York, New York, so good theynamed it twice” so please book June 3rd 2013 fornext year’s Big Lunch, when we can do it all again, with or without a Royal event to celebrate!Lesley LoweMBCH CommitteeTel 01981 540366
