SHREWSBURY HOUSE PRE-PREP
FRIDAY 11th May, 2018
NEWSLETTER
HEADLINES
For such a short week, we have
managed to achieve an amazing
amount. The horticultural theme
in Nursery and Year 1 proved
timely with the good weather that
greeted our return to school after
the first May bank holiday.
From watching Reception
welcome the driver of a traditional
“Black Cab” on Tuesday, through
to observing Year 2 designing and
making moon buggies on
Thursday, I was reminded not only
of the amazing variety of
opportunities afforded to the
children, but also their confidence
and insight.
Have a good weekend.
James Tilly, Head.

NURSERY
f,f,f, for flowers and ….
Nursery enjoyed the story of The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle this week. The children are now closely studying their
seeds and plants for signs of growth, and are providing them with lots of much needed water. Our letter sound
this week was ‘f’, leading us to focus on flowers. The children counted, observed and created their own collage
bluebell flowers. In maths we have been practising using positional language and the children were able to use
words like ‘next to’, ‘under’, ‘above’, and ‘below’ when talking about the positioning of their small world toys.

RECEPTION
This has been another busy week and we have further explored the London theme.
On Tuesday, Louis the taxi driver came to visit us in his Hackney Carriage. The children explored the taxi and
were shown how to print out receipts with his special ticket machine.
The children have enjoyed the Art work and have been creative in a number of ways. Vehicles were dipped in
paint and used to create brightly coloured tracks on black paper. The children produced lovely paintings which
are on display in the classroom.
We counted traffic from a video clip and then checked to see who had spotted the most cars and taxis!

YEAR 1 YEAR 1
On Thursday Year 1 had a wonderful day out at the beautiful nature
reserve Bay Pond. We explored the vast array of plants and flowers,
played games learning about the processes of germination and pollination
and went on a plant treasure hunt using all our newly gained knowledge
to identify and name plants. We used materials gathered during our walk
to design and name some very creative elves and fairies. The most
popular activity of the day was when the children imagined what it was
like to be a nocturnal animal. They put on blindfolds and followed a rope
through the woods, using their senses to explore their surroundings. The
children were thoroughly engaged throughout thanks to our personal
guides Roger and Emma who led us around the reserve answering all
their inquisitive questions about nature. We were extremely proud of
how the children behaved and interacted with the all activities which was
also acknowledge by our guides who described the children as a “lovely
group”. Read some more of our favourite parts below:
James C (1JB)- My favourite part of our trip was when we did the blind
fold activity. We pretended to be hedgehogs and used our hands and
feet to find out where we were going.
Sam H (1JB)- I loved played the germination game where we were seeds
and had to collect the things we needed to grow and the birds had to try
and eat us.
Charles B (1VB) - My favourite part of the day was when we did the number hunt, finding all the different plants. We had to find which plant it was, match it to our flower key and name it.
Zach H (1VB) - I really liked doing the nature art and making pictures of the meadow using the flowers I found.

YEAR 2
If I had a hammer.........
Wow! This week has been a week full of
hands-on learning in Year 2. We first looked
at different space vehicles and used what we
had learnt to design our own moon buggies.
Max's moon buggy had grabbers to pick up
moon specimens and others had satellites to
communicate with scientists back on earth.
Benji's moon buggy even had a bunkbed so
the astronauts could have a rest after
completing their exhausting work! We then
used hacksaws to cut the wood to make
axles and joined them carefully on to a
chassis. Nicholas was very good at
encouraging other children to be resilient
when using the hacksaws and Hari did a
great job of sawing through his pieces of
wood. We remembered to 'measure twice
and cut once' so had lots of practise at
measuring accurately with a ruler. Ethan and
Lewis were very excited as they had never
used a real hacksaw before.
Our moon buggies look incredible and we are
very proud of our carpentry skills.

AFTER SCHOOL CLUBS
Our after school tennis team enjoyed some balmy early summer weather at Esher Tennis Club this
week. Showing impressive line speed they moved well round the court and honed their forehand skills
