Winter Uniform Reminder

In their Citizenship Time, Year 8 will be discussing their role as citizens within school and within the local community.

To support this learning, after half term, they will be welcoming some young people who have experienced homelessness. They will talk about their experiences and how they are trying to move forward. These young people are being supported by the local charity, Step-by-Step, and will share their experiences as part of their work to return to independence. They do not charge for the visit.

To show their appreciation for the visit Year 8 will be holding a cake sale in aid of the charity on Monday 13th November. Donations of cakes would be very welcome on the morning. Please hand them into Matron. Children in Year 3 upwards may buy a cake during morning break. They will be priced at 50p each. Please remember that cakes brought in should be nut free.

Bags should be returned to school between 8.00am and 8.50am on Wednesday 8th November and will be collected by Bag2School that day.

Please do not bring filled bags in before that date.

Year 5 will be taking part in a Victorian Day at school on Thursday 23rd November. To help them to get into character we would like them to come to school in simple Victorian costume. A letter giving simple costume ideas was sent home with the children on Friday.

Year 5 will be visited by professional actor, Chris Connaughton, who through performing extracts from Charles Dickens’ novels will help the children understand what life could be like for a child in Victorian Britain. The children will then use their drama skills to put together a Victorian scene.

Year 5 Parents are invited to come to the Studio at the end of the day to see what the children have achieved. We are looking forward to an exciting and stimulating day of history and drama.

Year 5 Victorian Day

The next event in our series of maths workshops is for parents of children in Years 3 and 4. It will take place on Tuesday 14th November, starting at 4.45pm, and will last approximately 45 minutes.

The aim of these workshops is to discuss how to better support your child at home and suggest ideas for keeping maths interesting and relevant to everyday life.

If you would like to attend this meetings please complete and submit the form using this link or email Penny Charles.

Maths Workshops for Parents of Children in Years 3 & 4

Rugby starts a couple of weeks after half term.

Under the laws of the game, all players must wear approved footwear which includes boots fitted with rugby safety studs, moulded blades or blades (except Adidas metal tipped blades). Removable rugby safety studs are obtainable from the school shop (50p each or £5.50 for a bag of 12) and all good sports shops. Please get some soon. NB This does not apply to Years 1 and 2 as they will be playing touch rugby and will play in their trainers. It is recommended by RFU that mouth guards be worn as well. Children without a gum shield will not be able to represent the school in any teams and will only have limited access to elements of training sessions. Therefore all boys from Year 3 upwards should have a gum shield.

Sports Stars of the Month

Year 6 and Year 8 pupils were given their exam revision guide booklets this week. Please check that your child brings their copy home. A few spares will be available from School Reception.

Year 6 and Year 8 Revision Guide Booklet

Jasper Burton: for improvement in football, working his way from the D team to the first XI and a superb attitude in sports lessons.

Sophie Etherington: for her constant enthusiastic approach and commitment to sport and her impressive contribution to the U11A teams’ successes this and last season.

We will soon be sending home a data sheet containing the contact information we currently hold for families. We would be grateful, once in receipt of this, if you could check and update the information and return it to Tanja Weddell. The school directory will be published soon afterwards.

As part of our run-up to Christmas, we are again supporting the Salvation Army’s Christmas Present Appeal which distributes gifts to disadvantaged children within the local community. As usual, we will be collecting shoe boxes filled with gifts and would be grateful for donations. Here are some guidelines to help you create a gift box:

• Please wrap your shoe box in festive paper, remembering to wrap the box and the lid separately so that the box can still be opened.

• Decide on the age and gender of the recipient

• Fill the box with appropriate gifts. Ideally they should be filled with items that children would like to receive. This might include:

• Toys: soft toy, ball, finger puppet, jigsaw, yo-yo, building blocks, small musical instrument, trucks, cars or dolls

• Stationery: pens, pencils, note book, felt pens, pencil sharpener, rubber, paints, colouring book, puzzle book, chalk, pencil case, stickers

• Toiletries: bubble bath, soap, body lotion, novelty toothbrush, hair clips

• Other Items: Sweets, chocolate (please a small amount only in each box), hat, cap, necklaces, bangles, gloves, scarf, sunglasses

• Please do not include: war related items, (toy guns, knives etc), sharp or fragile objects, medicines or vitamins.

• Please include a donation of at least £1 in an envelope in the box to cover distribution costs and to help the Salvation Army provide food for needy families at Christmas.

• Secure the lid with a rubber band and attach a label with the age and gender of the suggested recipient

• Gift boxes for adults would also be very warmly received.

• Deliver to School Reception by Friday 1st December as a representative from the Salvation Army will collect all gifts in the following week.

With your help, hopefully we can collect even more boxes than we did last year and help children who are less fortunate than our pupils to have an enjoyable Christmas.

Thank you very much for your support with this appeal.

Christmas Present Appeal

We are holding our annual competition to design the Yateley Manor Christmas card 2017.

Children’s designs should be A5 in size, portrait or landscape, and should, of course, have a Christmas theme. We ask that the pictures are the children’s own work. They may be done in any 2D media (paint, crayon, felt pen etc).

Designs, with the artist’s name and tutor group on the back, should be handed to form tutors on the first Friday after half term, Friday 10th November.

One design from Pre-Prep and one from Year 3 upwards will be chosen.

This is of course an optional competition for the children but we are looking forward to seeing lots of great works of art.

You may have noticed a new addition to our front office – a scarecrow called Timothy!

He is part of the Yateley Scarecrow Hunt organised by St. Peter’s Church for the half term holiday. If you would like to find the other scarecrows you will need to purchase a map from either Café 46 or Discoveries, the charity shop next to the church.

There will be prizes! For more details click on the link to the poster. Good luck!

Yateley Scarecrow Hunt

On Monday, we were delighted to welcome author Caroline Lawrence at Yateley Manor to talk to children in Years 4 to 8. As well as describing her job and background as a successful writer, she shared tips on how to write a good story and told the children all about her series of Roman Mysteries of which many are already avid readers. After a question and answer and book signing sessions, Caroline joined a

group of children for lunch.

Caroline kindly invited all children to email her ([email protected]) if they had burning questions they had not had time to ask her. Her talk was very well received and she kept her large audience spell-bound with her tales for an hour and a quarter. Thank you Caroline and vale!

Children Enjoy Author’s Visit

On Tuesday 21st November October Robert Upton together with Keith Murrall will be speaking and giving advice on how to choose your child’s next school. They will also answer questions from the floor.

The meeting, which will start at 7.00pm and will last for approximately an hour, is aimed particularly at those with children in Years 4 and 5, but is open to all parents . Parents in the past have found this meeting very useful as they begin to consider options for education after Yateley Manor.

If you would like to attend the meeting please complete and submit the form using this link or email Penny Charles.

On Thursday 12 October 2017 Sam Ballentine, Sadie Kitto, Jonathan McFall and Sam Rowe represented the school at the annual Two Person Debating Competition Day hosted by Sherfield School (5 schools and 10 teams in total).

The teams had four structured round robin debates each. After a mere 20 minutes to prepare they had to propose or oppose a motion to an opposing team. Pupils had to think logically, to empathise, to construct persuasive arguments and to be articulate and convincing. They were marked on their content, strategy and style. Both teams won their first three debates and Sam and Sadie qualified for the semi-final by virtue of points.

Unfortunately, time ran short and the semi-final was cancelled. This left our two teams four and fifth on the day. Although this was a little disappointing, both teams learnt a huge amount about public speaking and have made an excellent start to the debating season!

Sherfield Public Speaking Competition

On Tuesday Year 5 went for a walk to discover more about Yateley’s Victorian past. They went to what was the old village school and looked at the plaque on the building saying when it had been built. The children were surprised to see that Yateley was spelt differently then: Yately – with no second ‘e’!

The group then walked to look at some houses that had been built in 1862 and sketched some of the features of the buildings. They will

use this information in the coming weeks to add to their understanding of what life was like in Victorian Britain.

Years 7 and 8 see The Wipers TimesLillian Scarr (6MJB) has lost her named, red school coat. During half term please check your coat to ensure you have the correct one. If you have seen Lillian’s coat please email [email protected].

Lucas Neville (2AH) has lost his named tennis racket which has a cover on it.

If you have seen it please leave a message in School Reception or email [email protected].

Thank you.

A reminder for children to check their classroom equipment during half term to make sure that they start next half term fully equipped with pen, pencils, rubbers, ruler and glue etc. Thank you.

Children in Year 7 and 8 visited the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Guildford to watch the First World War play, The Wipers Times written by Ian Hislop. The play was funny, poignant and very moving as it re-told the real story of soldiers trying to keep morale up by publishing a newspaper in the trenches.Senior children study the First World War in a cross curricular approach. As well as examining the history of the war, they also study war poetry in English and war paintings in art. In March the children will be visiting the area around Ypres to see the World War I battlefields and cemeteries to get a first-hand view of what happened there 100 years ago.
