BOISE BASIN QUILTERS
A THANK YOU In this season just past, full of thankfulness and joy, I want to express my thankfulness for each of you who have worked diligently for the guild. (For those of you on the side-lines, I understand. In this time of uncertainty, it is difficult. However, we are being cau-tious and would be glad to pick up any items from your doorstep and our meetings are taking place virtually. We can ALWAYS use more help, just call me!
Many of us, during our time of quarantine, have been able to catch up on our UFO’s (Un-Finished Objects) or as some call them PHD’s (Projects Half Done). Members have generously donated many of these quilts to fire victims during our campaign last fall, or for our Quilts for Kids outreach. We also received many pillow cases and pet beds.
We recently received a last minute request and ONCE AGAIN, our members were able to fulfill another need in the community. I am so amazed and appreciative. Quilter’s are certainly known for answering the call to donate to those less fortunate, to meet a need greater than their own. This time we were able to help by collecting quilts for Hays House by partnering with a local Methodist Church to supply their need. What is Hays House? It is best described in the following article by our member Sherry Bernard.
I could not think of any better way to begin the new year than to once again express my thanks to our amazing quilters by posting thanks from others.

A Thank You from One of Our Members
Thank you for your donations I was contacted by my daughter in November asking if I wanted to collect quilts for the teenagers that are residents of Hays House for Christmas. Her work picks a project each year and blesses some charity with whatever their need is. I immediately said yes, I would be happy to find quilts to donate. We had done this three years ago and were able to collect 25 quilts on short notice for Idaho Youth Ranch; Hays House and Hands of Promise. These quilts would go to the teen residence for Christmas. Each teenager that is in the facility is given a blanket or quilt that is their personal quilt to have. If there are any quilts left over they save them for new residents that arrive. These teenagers might be there for a short stay or longer. Either way they keep the quilt with them. A Thank You from One of Our Members – As it turned out this year we were able to collect a total of 22 quilts that will be gifted to these kids that are struggling for one rea-son or another. Who is Hays House? “When hope seems lost, we leave a light on. Hays House is here for kids who are runaways, homeless, or victims of abuse or neglect, with a safe place to stay, no matter what, no matter when.” Idaho Youth Ranch, Hays House and Hands of Promise, is the Treasure Valley's only 24-hour shelter for runaway and homeless youth. The women (and men) who pour their heart and souls into stitching love, into fabric to make something that others can wrap themselves in, for whatever reason are my hero’s. They don’t do it for accolades and certainly not for money. They do it because their hearts are so full of joy and caring that they have to share it so they can do it all over again. My thanks go out to those who donate their time and money to supply a little love to these teenagers that are in so much need. I can’t believe it has been a full year since my last New Year New Me (NYNM) post………………….if you are a betting person,
hopefully you didn’t bet that I would change in 2020. The Idaho Lottery Raffle has let me down again this year. If I ever do win I prom-
ise I will stay humble, and the guild will be a recipient of my good fortune. So this year my wife and I decided shopping online isn’t all
that bad. I do prefer to see and feel the fabric before purchasing, but we have done both. I was looking for a particular fabric and saw
Barbara Smith at one of the stores and she referred me to another store which was having a sale. Thanks Barbara for the advice, but I
think I may have a shopping problem. Maybe there could be worse habits to take up. So for this NYNM resolution, I want to finish or
at least start all the projects I have purchased fabric for (purchased this year or previous years?). One, for the self-satisfaction of
completion. Two, for my wife to let me purchase more fabric. Please don’t judge me when you see me with fabric during the Quilt
Shop Hop when/if it takes place.
Barbara did give me some ideas of what she would like to see at the 2021 Quilt Show. She mentioned most of us would/should be
vaccinated soon considering the demographics of the guild. Then she also mentioned I was younger so I may not be processed until
mid-summer. It is time to begin planning and if you have any ideas, please pass them along to me. Better still, become a committee
member to give your ideas either by zoom or hopefully in person. The earlier in the planning stage, the more time we have to discuss
and plan and more likely your ideas could be in the show.

Admissions, Door Prizes, Layout/Floor Plan, Set – up, and 2021 Raffle quilt tour. Let me or Sandy Dement know if you are interest-
ed, we would love to have you volunteer and be part of something BIG. We have eight months of planning and the first meeting is on
January 28, 2021 at 7pm and will be on zoom. So if you want to sit in to see a meeting and eventually be a committee member let us
know so we can send you the link to the meeting.
Cheers to the NEW YEAR NEW ME time of year. I wish you all the best in health and well being. I love seeing you at the quilt
shops. I am excited to see each of you when we can start holding LIVE meetings and quilt shows again.

Quilts For Kids brought 2020 to a close with a December delivery to St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital. After the November delivery to Ronald McDonald House, we also donated teen-sized quilts to The Hayes House through member Sherri Bernard. St. Luke’s received 12 pediatric and 2 premature baby quilts. Ronald McDonald house received 13 quilts and Hayes House received 7 quilts. We received lots of pieced tops at the fall drive by events. Thank you members! Q4K has purchased two bolts of batting and will soon be preparing a new batch of quilting kits with the finished tops. I am excited to see how many quilting kits we can create with the backing fabric still on hand. All of the quilting kits that we prepared for the fall have been passed out. Thank you members! We look forward to receiving these back once they are quilted. We still have a couple of bins of piecing kits to hand out. If you are looking for a project, feel free to let me know. I know a lot of members have kits at home and we are looking forward to seeing the pieced tops. Thank you members! If you want to take your piec-ing kits all the way to completed quilts, that would be great. But however you want to contribute, we appreciate your hard work. We’ll see when we can organize a future BBQ event. Perhaps when the weather improves, we can schedule another drive by. In the meantime, feel free to contact me if you want to drop off or pick up any projects. We would be happy to make deliveries if you have quilts ready to donate to the hospitals. Don't forget that Schoolhouse Classes in 2021 are scheduled for the last Saturday of each month, except when this conflicts with a holiday. Classes cost $15 for BBQ members and will be held at Boise Rigging Supply, 6750 W. Victory Rd., Boise. To enroll in a class, please make out a check to BBQ and mail it to Janice Black at 2303 Heights Dr., Boise, ID 83702, being sure to include your contact information.
We are doing everything possible to keep Schoolhouse classes safe for you! The January and February classes will be limited to 8 participants to allow for very ample spacing. BBQ has also purchased a webcam that will be used during teaching to help show details while maintaining distance . . . And starting in January for the first time we'll be making a Schoolhouse class available online as well as in-person!
To meet current Ada County requirements, participants must wear a mask to class. Please use your best judgement in determining whether attending a Schoolhouse class is, for you personally, worth the risk.
Don't miss out: register now! In this hands-on class, which is scheduled for 9:00-4:00 on Jan. 30th, you'll be piecing without a pat-tern (I promise it's fun!) as you construct a “Little House in the Wonky Woods.” At the end of the day, you should have a whimsical piece a little smaller than a square yard. If you add a border later, these can make wonderful toddler quilts! We will also go over a few additional ideas for deconstructed piecing in case you love the technique and want to continue experimenting with it on your own.
For this workshop, you'll need to bring your sewing machine, a rotary cutter, a cutting mat, any ruler that can be used as a straight-edge for squaring up small blocks, and 1- 1 ½ yards of background fabric, plus scraps for the trees and cabin in any colors that you like. Your background fabric should be non-directional, in a color that works well for displaying your trees and cabin. If you prefer, with enough advance notice you can choose to use donated back-ground fabric in return for a commitment to donate your completed quilt or quilt top to the Quilts for Kids program. Be sure your machine is ready to use, with a spare needle (just in case), appropriate thread, and thread snips. You'll also want to bring a mask; glasses if you need them; a water bottle; and a sack lunch . . . or you can choose to order lunch from nearby Idaho Pizza Company. If you have a small iron and pressing pad, please bring it. Otherwise, you will be making frequent trips to use the com-munal iron, so please bring adequate hand sanitizer for each use. You may also want to bring an ex-tension cord.

Our Schoolhouse class for February is Y-Seams: Making the Lemoyne Star, Carolina Lily and Farmer's Daughter Blocks. We had
planned to do this class last May but the class was canceled due to the Covid-19 virus. Some of you have signed up for this class
and paid the $15 already. I will be contacting you personally to see if you still want to and are able
to attend. If not we will be refunding you the $15.
Due to the ongoing restrictions we will be making some changes. We can have a limit of 8 stu-
dents in the class but will have an opportunity for others to attend via Zoom. The class will start at
9:00 AM and last till 3:00 PM. We will start out by having an introductory lecture and then demon-
strations on making a Lemoyne Star. We will then be able to practice sewing at our machines. Lat-
er on we will switch to the Carolina Lily block and do the same thing. Still later after lunch we will
cover the Farmer's Daughter block. We are going to try out the new web camera the guild has pur-
chased and use this for the lectures and demonstrations. We will have several Zoom meetings set up
throughout the day so that those who are unable to come can attend the class through Zoom. I have
handouts and patterns for the class members. I will send them to those signed up for the Zoom so they
can have them in front of them as I lecture and do the demonstrations. You will need to sign up at least
a week before the class so I can mail the materials to you and so Janice can get the Zoom link to you.
The class is $15 and will be held at Boise Rigging Supply, 6750 West Victory Road in Boise. Saturday,
February 27, 2021 is the date. Sign up by contacting me, Maureen Stevens at
[email protected] or Janice Black at [email protected]. Please bring your own lunch or
you can order something from Idaho Pizza Co.
For the class I will give you patterns for all the blocks but start with the Lemoyne Star. Once you
learn how to inset a seam the main difference in patterns will be sequence and pressing directions.
Some blocks use a square inset and some use a triangle inset. The Lemoyne Star requires both. We
will cover both the square and the triangle inset seam.
Supply list for the class: Sewing machine in good working order. Rotary cutter, mat and rulers. A
small iron and pressing surface. Sewing machine needles, pins, scissors and neutral thread. ¼" foot for
machine. Pencil for marking. Fabric scraps and assorted fat quarters (the Lemoyne Star can use 3 dif-
ferent fabrics, the Carolina Lily can use up to 5 different fabrics and the Farmer's Daughter can use 4
different fabrics).

Start the New Year out right by taking time for Block of the Month. This month's block will be "Happy Scrappy". Gail Wilson has provided the instructions for this 10-1/2" block.
Some of the fabrics are provided however, you will need three 5" squares of print and 3 solid strips. It will be fun to see the variety of fabrics shared with each block. As one definition of scrappy suggests it is a makeup of scraps of odds and ends. (I think we all may have a secret stash of those somewhere). Happy Quilting in 2021!

We hope you all had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. In early December we made a delivery to the St Luke's Foundation office. We took: 12 Chemo Caps 42 Pillowcases 13 PortaCath Pillows 80 Pretty Pockets The staff at the Foundation Office were so grateful to get these items. As you put away your Christmas decorations and get back to your sewing room, please consider using some of your stash for these very worthy projects. We also received a large donation of red felt in late November. We plan to cut out Stockings kits to pass out to you members. The finished stockings will be held for the Blue Star Mothers to send to deployed troops. Keep an eye on the Newsletter for the next Drive Up / Drop Off day. In the meantime, if you have a lot of Special Projects ready to donate, give one of us a call and we'll arrange to take delivery. Making a pet bed is easy. All you need is 2 fat quarters stuffed with scraps of fabric,
batting, and thread. Larger beds up to 30x30 are welcome too. To give the pets the
most comfortable beds, please use pet-friendly scraps that are soft, snuggly, and clean.
Donate to the Ends for Friends project at the next Guild meeting. Please make your own
scraps go into pet beds rather than bringing sacks of scraps to the Guild meeting for
others to make into beds.

The year of Fat Quarters has ended. Here is what you need to do with your stack of saved FQ's. Grab a paper bag and decorate it as a festive gift, put all your FQ's in it and bring it to BBQ's first meeting (whenever that will be) of 2021. We will hand out tickets for a drawing of someone else's decorated bag! It's been a long year without our quilting friends and it will be good to get back together again. List of Month and FQ: March.. Green April.. Flowers/pastels May.. Mother's Day/Spring June.. Celebration, barbeque, picnic, games August.. Batiks September.. Fall October.. Halloween November.. Christmas/Winter
How many have you finished? I dare say we've had plenty of time to complete a few, don't cha think? I'm happy with what I've been able to do, but some of you have finished a plethora of projects! Now, that has to feel good! So now that the year has ended, I will need to get your name and the number of finished projects you have completed so that we can determine who our winner of the UFO'S and PHD'S contest is and award the very nice prize.
