"Let’s GO for it!” That is, a great turnout for our November meeting! November 21st. When you see our General Meeting Facebook posting please share it!.”

It’s almost here! The holidays…a time of joy, peace and family gathering together. It’s also a time of

stress…. unfinished projects, family not being able to be together, and no guild meeting in December! I think

that is the part of the holidays that I personally find to be the hardest…not seeing my quilting family for more

than a month.

As I think about all of you, my quilting family, I am amazed by how many volunteers we have working in

the background to support our Guild and its success. These are the people that we never see on the podium, or

at the meetings, but they are valuable to us, nonetheless. Our website team, our media team, our membership

team, the volunteers that make the quilt show work…you are all very special people, and I want to take this mo-

ment to thank you…whomever you might be! Thank you for making things run more smoothly…thank you for

your behind-the-scenes efforts and input, but mostly…thank you for your dedication and drive. Without you be-

hind the Guild, we wouldn’t be what we are today!

As you contemplate finishing that holiday project, or the amount of food that you are going to prepare,

or the special treats that get made only at this time of year…please remember those who don’t have what you

might have. A note, a card, or a plateful of treats…can go a long way to creating something special for someone

who wouldn’t ordinarily have that.

On a final note, I would like you all to know how special you are to me! I have laughed with you, cried

with you, oohed and aahed with you, and I have admired the talent and skills that YOU ALL bring to our quilting

family. I will be stepping down as your President after the November meeting, due to health and personal is-

sues. I have been truly honored to be your President for the last 18 months, and I know that my successor, Ter-

ri Curry, will do an outstanding job for you, as your new President! I have faith that you will welcome her, and

will support her as much or more as you have been a support to me! Thank you for the opportunity to serve,

and love!

As always, wishing you joy, peace, and love this season! See you in January!

Indiana Quilt Gardens

Amish farmers and their families live side by side with builders of motor homes in Elkhart County of north-western Indiana. The area was hard hit by the eco-nomic downturn of 2008. The people gathered to de-velop ideas to improve the economy and the Indiana Quilt Gardens was born.

Every year volunteers and master gardeners plan 40 foot square gardens based on quilt blocks and located in public places and businesses. Over a million flowers

are planted. Tourists can drive the Heritage trail and visit the 6 towns located in Elkhart County. This is truly a quilters and flower lovers paradise. As an additional treat, many barns and stores also have beautiful quilt blocks painted on the buildings.

I am looking forward to sharing this wonderful experience with you in January

Our November Program will feature a presentation by ARTISANS FOR HOPE. Founded in 2009, Artisans for Hope serves about 100 refugees per year with the help of over 30 volunteers. Their goal is to make them feel welcome here in Boise and help them build a new home and life. The volunteers teach the refugees sewing, knitting, bookmaking and jewelry making. They provide the tools to help the refugees learn.

Quilts for Kids Monica Clements

SPECIAL PROJECTS Carol Bearce

Thanks to the generosity of our guild members, Quilts for Kids received 53 finished quilts at the October meeting. What a tremendous outpouring! We are encouraged that the flow will continue because a lot of members took home vari-ous kits from the meeting. They put a big dent in the piecing and quilting kits that were available. The Q4K committee will have to meet before the November meeting and bust out some more kits! A cute Halloween quilt made it through the process and we wanted to make sure it was available for a patient this month. We delivered a bag of 15 quilts to St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital right after

the October meeting with the Halloween quilt on top of the bag. Once BBQ labels are added to the rest, we will be making anoth-er round of deliveries in November. As ever, if you are interested in helping on the Q4K committee, contact Monica Clements at 208-631-9524. Happy Quilting!

We were happy to see so many members stopping by the Special Projects table at the October meeting. We will continue to have examples of the items requested and will have kits ready for assembling. Directions and patterns for all the special projects are on the BBQ website under Community Outreach - Special Projects. Please be sure to return the Holiday Themed Pillowcases at the November meeting. Children spending Christmas in the hospital will receive a special pillowcase during the holidays to help bring them a little extra cheer. BBQ members donated following items for the month of October: Adult Clothing Protectors : 2 Cases for Smiles: 37 Chemo Caps: 30 Porta-Cath Pillows: 107 Pretty Pockets: 24 Note from Gail Vaughan: 255 Christmas stockings will be delivered to the Blue Star Mother's of Idaho this week. In addition to deployed service men and women, some filled stockings in care packages will be given to veterans at the VA home in Boise, and veterans at retirement homes in Mountain Home. Thank you to everyone for supporting these special projects in order to help our community. Carol Bearce, Kay Waggoner, Kathy Mello Special Projects

VOLUME 35, ISSUE 4 November 2019 PAGE 6

Outreach The October BBQ membership meeting was so much fun! So many smiles, so much joy, and lots of visitors and new members to welcome made seeing the summer’s ribbon-winning quilts and Show ’n’ Tell even more fun. November 21st is our last BBQ membership meeting of 2019, so another great reason to invite a visitor to the meeting. Our touch goes beyond our reach. Keep your corners square, and see you there!

Quilts of Valor (QoV) Two folks donated floating star blocks, one completed quilt, plus four quilt tops were donated to QoV at the October membership meeting. Thank you for continuing to support the local QoV effort to thank American ser-vice veterans and active service personnel nominated to receive quilts. The Quilts of Valor Foundation allows 12 months between the date the request is received and the award, but sometimes, there just isn’t that much time. Your donations allow us to award a quilt as soon as the recipient can receive it. It is an honor to present a quilt to thank a veteran or active military person touched by war for his/her service, but something especially humbling when their time is short. I have four presentations scheduled around Veterans Day week, presenting twelve quilts, with more requests coming in almost every week, so there’s still a great need for 60”x80” RWB quilts to award locally. It is very important that the quilts awarded locally as Quilts of Valor are approximately 60”x80”. When smaller completed quilts are donated to QoV, we use them to show when BBQ has a membership booth at an event such as the quilt show, the Eagle Fiber & Quilt Exhibition, Quilt, Craft & Sew Festival, or, on rare occasions, when a wheel-chair quilt is requested as a QoV award. We have plenty of smaller quilts, so please consider donating smaller quilts directly to veterans at the VA hospital, or to an assisted living facility for resident veterans, as they are beautiful decorations for a veteran’s room. Note for your calendar - the 2020 Quilts of Valor National Sew Day is Saturday, February 1st. Our local event will be hosted again next year by Idaho Sewing & Vacuum at their Boise Store located at 4500 W. Overland Drive, 10:30am-4:30pm. Come when you can, stay as long as you want. Bring your sewing machine (or let me know if you want to use one of BBQ’s). We’ll have patterns and red, white and blue fabric; you can bring your own red, white and blue fabrics if you want to (no prints of explosions/fireworks, and/or glittery fabric, and re-member the quilts are given to adult military service personnel and veterans). All the blocks made will be set into quilts for awarding locally to American military veterans and active service personnel, nominated to receive a Quilt of Valor to thank them for their service. To request a quilt for an American service veteran or active service person:

• Go to http://qovf.org

• Click “Learn How To” at the top of the page

• Click “Request a Quilt of Valor: from the menu

• Click the “Request a Quilt of Valor” button

• Fill in the form (Select Myself or Someone Else for “Who is this quilt for?”)

• Click the “Yes” box at the bottom.

• Click “Submit”. The QoV member presenter closest to the address given on the form receives the request, and will contact the nominator or nominee a few days later. You’re welcome to contact Connie Emmen if you have any questions ([email protected] or 208.366.9919). Quilts of Valor Sew Group The first meeting of the yet-to-be-named Quilts of Valor group sew day was a rousing success! We framed 13 floating stars donated over the summer into the traditional Grandmothers Frame piecing pattern, and almost everyone took kits home to piece more. Even more kits were taken at the BBQ membership meeting, so there will be lots to do setting them into tops at the November 13th sew day at the Eagle Public Library, 100 N. Stierman in Eagle 1-4pm. Bring your sewing machine (thread and what you need for sewing perfect quarter-inch seams), rotary cutter, ruler and mat, and red, white and/or blue fabric. If you want to be included in the sew day email invitation list, send your email address to me at [email protected]. If you’d like to have a QoV sew day group that fits your location and time, let me know. Every-one is welcome, regardless of patchwork skill level, BBQ member or friend; you can learn and hone your skills to measure and cut, sew and set blocks, bind and label. If you’re a machine quilter, we’ll need your skills, too (homework, of course). The objective of the group will be to make red, white and blue quilts, donate them to Quilts of Valor and award them locally, as requested, through the Quilts of Valor Foundation website http://qovf.org. Contact Connie Emmen ([email protected] or 208.336.9919 (landline, no text)) if you have ques-tions or input. Hope to see you there! Be sure to respond to the When ’n’ Where survey in the November email invitation.

Niggles’N’Noodles

Niggle: Should patchwork seams be pressed open or to the side?

Noodle: Each technique has its place, often in the same project. In general, pressing open distributes the seam bulk evenly on both sides of the seam, but can put additional stress on the thread & fabric, and, with a 2.5 or longer stitch length or uneven tension, can allow batting fiber migration over time. Pressing to the one side can reduce thread stress, is more tolerant to stitch length and tension, and doesn’t encourage batting migration. Seam width bulk is all on one side, creating a high and low side, making Stitch-in-the-Ditch quilting an option. Seams must be pressed firmly and fully to one side against the seam line to avoid creases on the right side. Whichever way you choose, make sure the seam goes the same way on both ends when the block is stitched into its adjoining blocks. Here are some consider-ations when deciding which way to press a particular seam:

• Colors and weights of the fabrics Side - for similar weight fabrics, pressing toward the darker fabric avoids shadowing (the pressed seam show-ing through a lighter color/weight fabric). Heavy fabrics pressed to the side can cause bulk that can be seen or felt when the quilt is used, and can cause needle deflection when machine quilting.

Open - distributes the bulk evenly along the seam. Shadowing behind lighter fabrics is more likely, making the evenness of the seam allowance noticeable. Commonly used when seaming together long strips of the same fabric (either straight seamed or mitered) and piecing backings.

• Piecing pattern Side - easy to match two seams, when they’re pressed fully against the seam to the opposite sides. Even with enthusiastic pressing, it can cause significant bulk and/or a “volcano” (that little mountain of fabric that bumps up where multiple seams meet) at the intersection of more than two seams, such as at the center of a LeMoyne Star. Curved piecing patterns pressed into the convex piece (into the circle, for example) looks like it’s laying on top of the background. Pressing toward the concave piece (background), it looks like it’s behind the background. Patterns will often include an arrow, recommending the direction to press seams.

Open - may be the best way to manage bulk when matching more than two seams, such as Y-seams or stars, or mitered corners. Reduce the stitch length to strengthen the seam and discourage batting migration.

• Trimming tools you plan to use Side - trimming tools, such as the Bloc-Loc require a ditch (low side of a side-pressed seam) to lock into when trimming the outside of the block. Tools with a flat back side are more likely to slip and pivot while trimming.

Open - trimming tools may be more difficult to align directly on the open seam, and slip more easily.

• How you want it quilted Side - Stitch-in-the-Ditch can be done, on the low side, when seams are securely pressed to one side. Quilting can also follow the seam on the high side. To avoid deflecting the quilter’s needle, causing a divot in an other-wise smooth line, point or curve, press the seam securely against the stitching.

Open - Since there is no ditch, your quilter can’t Stitch-in-the-Ditch. Quilting on either side of the seam can put additional stress on the seam - both thread and fabrics - and encourage batting migration between the stitches. While quilting, the machine needle is more likely to pierce the seam’s thread as it passes over a seam pressed open, weakening the thread, which could cause a hole in the seam.

Email your niggles to [email protected]. We’ll get noodling on them right away!

The winners for our August Blocks of the Month were Erica Buck for It Takes Two/Wagon Wheel and Jan Lundine for Beacon Star. Congratulations and thanks for participating. Two patterns will be available in November. Each of these kits will be $1.00 each and will be sold to mem-bers to return the following meeting. Sorry but, we will not be selling extras for personal use. The pattern and one fabric for the Folded Mock Cathedral Block will be provided. You can select a comple-mentary fabric of either solid or a print to complete this block. This is a fun way to make a Cathedral Win-dow with no math involved. We have a fun winter scene fabric that will be the center of each Shoo Fly Block. You can fussy cut a scene out of the provided fabric. Additional fabrics will come from your stash.

Please return your Sunflower Block with Prairie Points and Fall Pumpkin from our October Blocks of the Month so you can be in the drawing to win all of the completed blocks at our next meeting.

Pet Beds Nancy Valentine

Making a pet bed is easy. All you need is 2 fat quarters

stuffed with scrapes of fabric, batting, and thread.

Larger beds up to 30x30 are welcome too. To give the

pets the most comfortable beds, please use pet-

friendly scraps that are soft, snuggly, and clean.

Donate to the Ends for Friends project at the next

Guild meeting. Please make your own scraps go into

pet beds rather than bringing sacks of scraps to the

Guild meeting for others to make into beds. If you

have any questions please contact me:

School House Maureen Stevens

On October 19, 2019 we had our first Schoolhouse class for the year. Julia Ziegler taught us how to make a 2 Fabric Bargello quilt. 20 students signed up for the class. We had a great time and most everyone went home with an almost completed quilt top. Those of you who signed up but weren't able to attend, come to the Schoolhouse table at the guild meeting and pick up your packet of instructions that Julia made for each student. It was so much fun to see the differ-ent fabrics and what you could do with them. You can always learn so much from classes that you may attend and Julia is a great teacher. We appreciate her coming and helping us at BBQ.

Our Schoolhouse class in November is Miniatures and Small Quilts taught by Maureen Stevens. I will teach the difference between a Miniature and a Small Quilt and why you might want to make either or both. I will provide tips, handouts and patterns and you will get hands on experience in working with small patches. Don't be intimidated. We will start with a bigger block and get smaller as the day progresses. The cost is $15 and the class lasts from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. You can either bring your lunch or order lunch for $9. The supply list is included below.

Heads up for our class coming in January, it seems like a long time from now but as we don't have a meet-ing in December, we want you to know what we have for January. Eileen Wardle will be teaching Settings, Borders and Mitered Corners. Come and check us out at the Schoolhouse table.

All our classes are held at Boise Rigging Supply, 6750 West Victory Road in Boise. Come in the west side door (the metal door between 2 garage type doors, not the glass lobby door). The classes are held in the training room on the second floor. You can use the stairs or use the elevator in the lobby area.

See us at the Schoolhouse table at the guild meeting or contact me at [email protected] if you have any questions.

Supply list is on the next page.

ADVERTISEMENTS

Dear Fellow Quilter,

We proud to present the 8th annual Blackfoot Quilt Fest! We will be putting on this festival on April 2, 3 & 4, 2020. We are hoping to have variety of classes along with quilt shops to provide a vendors mall for the quilters. We are open to all stages of quilt-ers from beginning to advance and we hope to get a wide variety of classes to accom-modate everyone.

We would appreciate your consideration in becoming a teacher during our festival. Please choose a pattern (or pat-terns) you would like to teach, that you believe will attract students. We’ve included a proposal form that will give us all the in-formation needed for our Committee to make its decision about which classes to offer. If your class is chosen, the information on the proposal form will be used to describe your project, so please be thorough. Please include cutting instructions with your proposal so the Committee has that information when it reviews the submissions. Submit a separate form for each project you would like us to consider. We need the proposals back by November 1st. You will receive a follow-up letter before November 15 via email, after the Committee has met to choose the classes for the festival. If we do not hear from you by November 1st we will assume you are not interested in participating.

The festival will be held in at the Snake River JR High in Blackfoot Idaho, on April 2, 3 & 4, 2020 We will provide a meal for you as a teacher on the day of your class/classes, plus a hotel room if you are a teacher from outside the Blackfoot area who needs to stay overnight. Our teachers earn $25.00 per hour during their class. Please email the proposal form and all additional information to [email protected] (preferred) or mail it to the address below by November 1st 2020 We appreciate your time and we hope to see your submission soon. If you have any questions about the festival please feel free to contact Jenny Callison at 208-681-8264 or use the email above. You can also follow us on Facebook for the most up-to-date information.
