Threading the Needle continued on page 3 This month, we are profiling our Vice-Chair,

Immediate Past Chair and Corresponding Secretary.

Catherin Pickerill, Vice-Chair

Like a lot of ladies my age, I learned to sew at around five years old, grew up making my own clothes, later my children’s clothes and even my husband’s suits.

I was introduced to quilting at about the same time I learned to sew. My grandmother and great aunt would take me with them to their

“Sewing Club” where a group of ladies would be sitting around a quilting frame. I loved to crawl under that frame and watch all the hands and needles flow in rhythm. I did not start quilting until sometime in the 1980s. A group of co-workers needed one more person to fill a class, so I said “Why not, it might be fun,” and have never looked back. I stopped making clothes, all those curves and set-in things – ugh!

Shortly after making that quilt, I joined the guild. I have enjoyed its growth and all of the wonderful opportunities it provides. I love quilting and the challenges it offers, curved piecing (am I back to that? – you bet) and just getting it right. If there is a new technique, tool or method out there, I want to try it. I must say, that my biggest learn-ing tool, has been to serve on different committees, within the Guild. I have met the most amazing people, and you better believe that “everyone is a teacher.”

One of the most rewarding jobs, has been working with the Quilt Show group, and especially working in the judging room. Everyone should take advantage of that ex-perience.

I am looking forward to serving as your Vice-Chair, and all of the challenges ahead. Some of the goals I have set for this year are: meeting new quilters and hopefully helping them grow to love quilting as much as I do; growing friendships with Guild members; and I always want to improving my quilting, plus learn new skills. Let’s cover the world in quilts of love.

Linda Murphy, Immediate Past Chair

Hi I am Linda Murphy, BBQ Guild Immediate Past Chair for 2016-17. I joined the Guild in 2011. I have been sewing quilt tops for about 37 years, however, I did not finish any of my 32 UFOs, until I moved here and joined BBQ.

I have been sewing since my 4-H years. I was a secondary school art teacher in Winnemucca, Nevada for 25 years. I taught art, therefore my quilting comes from the art quilt direction. I also enjoy reading, gardening and my labra-doodle, Bella.

I have two children, nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Daughter, Ann, lives in Winnemucca. Our oldest granddaughter lives with us and is a member of BBQ. She has a brother, attending his second year at UNR in Reno. Her young-est brother also lives in Reno, and the other brother lives in Selma, Oregon, and is a senior in high school. Our son and his family live in Chase, Kansas. He and his wife have a daughter in college, their son is a senior in high school, and they have three married children, who have given us six great grandchildren.

Threading the Needle, continued from page 2 Michelle Crawforth, Corresponding Secretary

Who’s Michelle, the Corresponding Secretary (aka “the hat lady”)? I’m Boise born and went to Boise/Idaho schools (including Boise JUNIOR College) and married Dave while at BJC. After U of I graduation, I worked for Kodak in Rochester, NY, several years before returning to Boise in 1986. Quilting, per se, wasn’t popular in the ‘50s when I learned to sew clothes on a treadle machine. The “quilting addiction” came in 1995. Traditional quilting was my “thing,” but now my focus is Art Quilts or

“wearables.” Pre-quilting, I became a Master Gardener and still love to get my hands “dirty.” We walk the dog A LOT (we are so well trained) and play golf a lot (both those tend to interrupt quilting … as do the many house and garden renovations, travel, and quilt retreats). Your help is needed in getting cards to BBQ-ers who would like/need a caring card. Email me [email protected] with the info needed, please. Thank you! Michelle, the goofy Hat Lady

Recap of September 15th Program with Barbara Shapel

BBQ enjoyed an informative and inspiring evening, with guest speaker, Barbara Shapel, who shared her journey in quilt-making with us, and presented an

amazing trunk show of her beautiful, two-sided Art Quilts. She explained how she makes her quilts and answered questions regarding her preferred fabrics, battings and thread choices. She also shared how nature, where she lives and visits, inspires her designs.

2016 “Sew at Home” Quilt Show 2017 Quilt Show – September 29th & 30th – 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

The 2016 Boise Basin Quilters’ Quilt Show was a success! We had about 2,100 visitors to our show this year; over 300 more than last year. 205 quilts were entered, which does not include the Quilts of Valor®, Vintage and Barbara Shapel displays. I have heard nothing but good comments about the quality of the quilts that were displayed in our show this year. Even the judges’ last com-ment was “you have a talented group of quilters here”. Congratulations and kudos to all of you who participated.

I especially want to thank all the volunteers who showed up to help during the week. Without you, the show could not run as smoothly as it did. Your efforts are very much appreciated, and it reflected in the happy vendors and visitors. Last, but not least, a special “thank you” to the Quilt Show Committee members. I’ve experienced firsthand the hard work and long hours you have put in not only at the show, but during this past year to make our show what it is. Your dedication is admirable. While I get the pat on the back for a job well done, you are the true shining stars.

Quilters’ Runway Maureen Stevens

Quilters’ Runway Welcome to Quilters’ Runway where we give free, downloadable patterns, for our Guild members. This year we are exploring various puzzles or challenges in quilting. Our series is titled “PUZZLES.” So far we have received several blocks in different sizes, with “puzzle” in the name. The challenge was to put them all into the same quilt. We also got instructions on how to do that. We have received instructions on how to make a “Sudoku Quilt” using fabric instead of numbers, to complete the 9-patches. Last month, our puzzle or challenge was to figure out how a block is constructed. We did that using the Disappearing 9-Patch. This month we will be using one block pattern called “Indian Puzzle,” but the challenge will be to make at least twelve versions of the block, by using different values, textures and colors of fabric in various places, in the block construction. Please take time to participate in our Quilters’ Run-way. It's lots of fun, and it will help you feel a part of the Guild. Remember, make a quilt using at least one of the elements that are presented during the year, and there will be a special place for you to dis-play your quilt in the 2017 Quilt Show. Please visit the BBQ website, click on Members Only and find your Quilters’ Runway patterns.

Lucky winners of “Back to School” related prizes, included School Bus pot-holders, Jeane Swanson; Apple for the Teacher wall hanging, Carol Smith; School supply pencil holder, Kathy Irwin. Many thanks to Pam Miller, for designing and making the school supply bag! “Art supplies” (fall fat quarters, generously donat-ed by Linda Kuster) were won by Dannette Kroft, Pat Thornsberry, Sonja Cherry and Alyssa Koelling. We decided to bend our “must be pre-sent to win rule” for Alyssa. She is one of our youngest members, and she actually had to go to school in the morning, so either had to do some homework or get to bed on time! Happy Birthday to Dianna Stewart who won the mum bouquet (Mum is a favorite word of teachers!) as well as all of you, with September birthdays! October’s theme is “Halloween.” If you have

Gosh, here we are the second month of the new quilting year, and we have already received a huge stack of quilts for donation to area hospitals and the Angel Flight program. And that doesn't include the quilt tops we received and sent out again for quilting and the quilts also sent out again for binding. I used to be amazed at the incredible generosity of our Guild members for donating their time and materials, but I have come to understand that kindness is a fundamental characteristic of quilters. We give to others, again and again. It is just our nature. So please stop by our table at the next meeting and pick up a kit to transform into something for a child to cherish. Or stop by and drop off material and/or batting for someone else to use. We are grateful for it all. The Quilts for Kids Project Team: Phyllis Kizer Rose Griffith Joyce Thompson Betsy Johnson

Quilts for Kids Phyllis Kizer The Silent Auction block for September was “Courthouse Steps.” The block for October will be “Arctic Nights.”

Jody Zanecki made 20 Christmas kits, from donated Inheritance fabrics, for the Case for Smiles pillowcase project. Please bring the Christmas pillowcases to the October Guild Meeting, to be dis-persed before the holidays. Jody also made patterns for the Adult Clothing Protectors and Connie Emmen made kits (already quilted plus binding and buttons!) using inheritance fabric. A few will still be available at the October Guild Meeting.

Ann Swanson was able to negotiate a donation from Fairfield, of poly fiber-fill, to use in the Porta-Cath Pillows. She also generously donated pre-cut Velcro strips, to use in the pillows. Please stop by the Special Projects table to pick some up, to use in making some pillows for our local chemo

patients at MSTI.

Current numbers for our projects: Case for Smiles Pillowcases: 12

Chemo Caps: 21 Pretty Pockets: 177

Neck & Helmet Coolers: 4 Porta Cath Pillows: 50

Adult Clothing Protectors: 3

All of the patterns can be found under Special Projects on the BBQ website.

Cheryl Neruda's “Underground Railroad” was on display in September, at the downtown branch of the Boise Public Library. Gay Elliot's “Sew Spooky” will be shown the month of October. I still have some of the donated Robert Kaufman flannel fabric, to be used in a drawing, to thank mem-bers for turning in their completed special projects. Mona Harp and Kathie James were winners at the September Guild Meeting. We're off to a great start this year. Thank you to everyone who has participated! Without your help, I would have nothing to deliver!

Special Projects Pam Lotspeich

Block of the Month Patty Henry Recognizing quilts for children is this “Swirling Dino-saur” Block.

It may look like Christmas came early, but really you are just in time to make a new holiday quilt with the two Christmas material blocks; the “Christmas Geese” and “Whirling Square” will get

you started. These fun projects help you try a new quilting skill, show others your expert quilting skills, or are a “just for fun” block. Patterns may be familiar or new, easy or challenging, but we guarantee they will be FUN. We will include appliqué, paper-piecing, Y-seams, etc, as well as standard piecing. Kits of each pattern, will be available for $1 each. All blocks returned at the following meeting will be awarded to the participant whose name is drawn at the end of break. What a great way to get a huge start on a new quilt top! Congratulations to our winners in September: Betsy Peterson (Pinwheel Disappearing Four Patch), Sharon Beidler (Sew At Home), and Barbara Derby (Basket of Fall Leaves).

Ends for Friends

Purr Purr Meow Purr - that's kitty talk, for “thank you” for the 41 beds you gave us to keep, for our very own, at the September meeting. To make yours for the October meeting, make a bag of 2 fat quarters (no larger...please...many larger shelter animals chew the beds apart, so they use our donations mostly for cats), fill it half full with 4" scraps of natural-fiber fabrics, battings and threads, sew the 4th side closed securely. Since we all make enough scraps of our own to fill a few beds every month, please, donate only finished beds, not just bags of scraps. You'll usually find empty bags, ready to fill with your scraps, made by BBQ's Inheritance committee members.

Quilts of Valor

The 2016 BBQ Quilt Show "Sew at Home" was honored to host a public, Quilts of Valor presentation, to six local Idaho veterans. The Boise State University ROTC color guard presented the colors, to a recording of America's National Anthem, by the Army Band and Chorus, to begin the ceremony. Each veteran came to the front, and was wrapped in a RWB (red, white & blue) quilt made by BBQ members, small groups or friends, while a synopsis of their service record was read. Following the ceremony, it was impossible to count the hugs, smiles, and tears all around, to and from the honorees. Receiving Quilts of Valor thanking each for serving America were: Dr. Vernon Ora Gaffner, US Army dentist, Viet Nam; Linda Murphy's brother Carmella Wilson, US Navy Reserve, Guam, Korea; BBQ Hospitality Chair 2016-17 Anita Wallinger, US Air Force nurse; BBQ member Jacqueline Franolich, US Air Force munitions specialist; nominated by BBQ member Kathy Reynolds Doug Franolich, US Air Force F-16 Crew Chief, Japan, Korea, Middle East; nominated by BBQ member Kathy Reynolds Larry Vander Meer, US Air Force F-101 Crew Chief, Viet Nam; QoV Foundation nomination Following the quilt show, 14 more RWB QoV donated quilts were passed on to Teri Devine, the local QoV representa-tive, to present to other local Idaho veterans, as nominated through the Quilts of Valor Foundation. Based on many, many comments, compliments and thanks, the presentation was beautiful and meaningful to everyone in attend-ance. Heartfelt thanks to each of you who have donated you time, talents, materials and support to make and donate the quilts we can award. We couldn't do it without you.

While you're planning your 2017 show quilt, remember to take time, now and then, to make red, white and blue tops and quilts for QoV. Also, an item for your calendar - the 2017 National Quilts of Valor Sew Day is February 4th. Idaho Sewing, Meridian, will be hosting a “Show Up 'n' Sew” Day where you can make blocks that we'll set into Quilts of Valor, next Spring. Thanks so much for your continued support for QoV and such a meaningful token of America's appreciation of the service given by our military service personnel and veterans.

Inheritance

BBQ’s Inheritance program is entering its fifth year. We are accepting donations of quilting and sewing supplies, books, patterns and tools, from sewing and quilting rooms needing to be downsized or dismantled. It’s been a very busy sum-mer, allowing Inheritance to support BBQ programs, such as our Library, Quilts for Kids, Special Projects, Ends for Friends, as well as providing materials for members who are making quilts for QoV, or donations to other organizations. We also provide donated materials to outside community organizations, as well, that use sewing and quilting to further their missions. Thanks for your help, and please contact Jody Zanecki, Connie Emmen or Cheryl Neruda if we can help you, a friend or group.

I am delighted to report that seven new members attended our "Meet and Greet" coffee on Sept. 7th. Meeting these new members, hearing their quilting histories, and seeing the show-and-tell pictures and projects was very enjoyable. Talk of stashes, down-sizing and gotta have it fabrics, circled the group, along with laughter and understanding nods. Just made me want to rush home and quilt, quilt, quilt. Catherin Pickerill
