On Tuesday 26th March, during the Semana Santa school holiday, the School received a very important and distinguished guest, the Baroness Gloria Hooper. The Baroness is a member of the House of Lords in the British Parliament. She formally opened The British School Quito in September 1995 and we were very privileged to have her return to the school to learn about the progress we have made in the past seventeen years. A number of students were invited to welcome and meet the Baroness to our school. The students were all dressed very smartly for the formal occasion and played excellent hosts and guides to the Baroness as they accompanied her around the campus and spoke about the learning taking place here at the school. During a Question and Answer forum the students and the Baroness had the opportunity to exchange experiences and ideas with each other. The students provided some excellent questions and represented the school very well throughout the event. Thank you very much to the students that attended the event during the school holidays and to their parents for arranging time and transport for the students to attend. The Baroness commented to our Director, Ms Tyler-Pascoe, that she enjoyed the company of the students and her visit to the school. We look forward to receiving Baroness Hooper again in the future having made even more progress as we continue to develop and improve our school.

El martes 26 de marzo, durante la pausa por Semana Santa, el Colegio recibió una muy importante y distinguida visita por parte de la Baronesa Gloria Hooper. La Baronesa es miembro de la Casa de los Lores en el Parlamento Británico. Ella estuvo presente para la inauguración oficial del British School Quito en septiembre de 1995; y nosotros tuvimos el privilegio de que regresara para ver el progreso que ha hecho el colegio en los 17 años que han pasado. Varios estudiantes fueron invitados a darle la bienvenida y conocerla. Vinieron con su uniforme más elegante para la ocasión e hicieron un excelente papel como anfitriones y guías para la Baronesa mientras la llevaron a conocer el campus y le hablaron sobre el aprendizaje en BSQ. Durante una sesión de Preguntas y Respuestas, los estudiantes y la Baronesa pudieron intercambiar experiencias e ideas. Los estudiantes hicieron muy buenas preguntas y representaron al colegio durante el evento. Muchas gracias a quienes vinieron durante su pausa de aprendizaje y a sus padres por permitirles hacerlo. La Baronesa le comentó a nuestra Directora, Ms. Tyler-Pascoe, lo mucho que disfrutó en compañía de los estudiantes y al pasear por el campus. Monday April 15th is our scheduled date to take the whole School photograph that will be the centerpiece of our 2012-2013 year book. The class photographs for Early Years, Primary and Secondary classes will also take place on Monday 15th and on Tuesday 16th April. It is very important that all the students are wearing their full school uniform and looking very smart for the photos. We appreciate your support and cooperation in ensuring that every student wears his/her full formal uniform properly on this date.

A further date will be set for those students who are not present on Monday 15th April. Thank you very much for your cooperation.

El día lunes 15 de abril se tomará la fotografía de todo el Colegio; y las fotos grupales para el anuario 2012-2013 se tomarán el mismo día 15 para Secundaria y el día 16 de abril para Primaria y Etapa Inicial. Por favor, contamos con su cooperación para asegurar que todos los estudiantes vistan sus uniformes de manera impecable en esta fecha.

Se fijará una fecha posterior para aquellos estudiantes que no se encuentren presentes ese día.

On March 21st, Years 2A and 2B visited the Interactive Science Museum (MIC) in the south of Quito. There was a very interesting show about Leonardo Da Vinci and this is a summary of some of the things the students learned:

Where was he born? Sabine: Italy

Where did he get his ideas for flying machines? Juliana: From watching birds.

How did he paint? Jemma: Using colour from ground stones.

How did he design the helicopter? Federico: By looking at nature.

What were his brushes made from? Carlos: Squirrel hair!

El 21 de marzo, Años 2A y 2B visitaron el Museo Interactivo de Ciencias (MIC), en el sur de Quito. Había una interesante exposición sobre Leonardo Da Vinci y nuestros estudiantes aprendieron algunas cosas sobre él, por ejemplo:

¿Dónde nació? Sabine: Italia

¿Por qué tuvo la idea de las máquinas voladoras? Juliana: se le ocurrió al ver a los pájaros volar.

¿Cómo pintaba? Jemma: Usando colores de tierra

¿Cómo diseñó el helicóptero? Federico: Basándose en la naturaleza.

¿De qué estaban hechos sus cepillos? Carlos: ¡de pelo de ardilla!

¿Cuál fue su pintura más famosa? Nico: la Mona Lisa

Why was he so interested in birds? Amelia: He wanted to fly too!

Did he have a secret lab? Santiago: No, he was not wealthy.

Why did he want to know everything? Ma. José: He was a true genius.

Why did he experiment with bodies? Amanda: He wanted to know how they worked.

Where did he live? Gian Luca: Italy and France.

Did he have kids? Martin Campana: No, he never married.

Why did he write backwards? Martin Carrera: So no-one would copy him.

Where did he die? Sisa: France.

Dear Parents,

This year has been a very challenging one in terms of balancing the needs of our learning community, our obligations with our staff team, and the new education law and regulations that were released long after the 12/13 calendar was released to the BSQ community.

We are very concerned about the impact that the changes on our calendar, as well as the extra days of government required closure, have had on our learners.

Therefore I have been working with the Senior Academic Leadership Team on a range of measures to respond to our concerns so that our learners are not disadvantaged.

What we have decided is that we will be running two Saturday Workshop and Lesson Make-Up Mornings early this term. These workshops will be for all children from Year 1 to Year 13 (with attendance compulsory).

Saturday the 6th and Saturday the 27th of April 2013 are the dates on which we will be running the two workshop and makeup lesson mornings. School will start at 8.20am with registration, followed by lessons from 8.30am to 12.10pm.

On these two days we will be offering intensive instructional programmes in areas where learning has been impacted by forced closure days, and exam preparation for students approaching examinations.

Estimados padres y madres de familia:

Este año escolar se nos ha presentado lleno de retos al buscar balancear las necesidades de nuestra comunidad, las obligaciones con nuestro equipo académico, y la nueva ley de educación y sus regulaciones - estas últimas - que fueron publicadas mucho después de que nuestro calendario interno 2012-2013 fuera aprobado y socializado con nuestras familias. Todos estos cambios en el calendario y los días de cierre adicionales que tuvimos que cumplir por disposiciones ministeriales, nos preocupan por el impacto que puedan tener en nuestros estudiantes

Por estas razones he trabajado con el Consejo Ejecutivo Académico (SALT) en una serie de medidas para dar respuesta, de algún modo, a nuestras inquietudes y que nuestros estudiantes no se vean afectados.

Lo que hemos decidido lo siguiente: Trabajaremos en dos Talleres y Lecciones de Recuperación en este mes. Estos talleres serán para los estudiantes de Año 1 a Año 13 y, la asistencia será de carácter obligatorio.

Los días sábados 6 y 27 de abril de 2013 serán las fechas en las que llevaremos a cabo estos dos talleres y lecciones de recuperación. El Colegio iniciará su jornada a las 8h20 con el registro de los estudiantes, para luego empezar las lecciones de 8h30 a 12h10.

Durante estos dos días ofreceremos programas de instrucción intensivos, en áreas donde el aprendizaje ha sido impactado debido al cierre obligatorio, así como la preparación a los estudiantes para quienes se aproximan sus exámenes.

Attendance at each of the two mornings is compulsory for all students from Year 1 to Year 13. Our regular bus services will be running on both days and details of collection and drop off times will be sent to you by our Student Affairs Officer, Marcela Ojeda, in due course.

I would also like to take this opportunity to remind families that the Family Fun Day on the 13th of April is also a day of compulsory attendance for all of our students. The education law allows for up to twenty (20) Saturdays to be used as part of our 200 functioning days. Family Fun Day has been registered as one of our days of student attendance from the start of the academic year. Outside of that, it will also be a very fun and enjoyable day for all, with lots of great food and activities planned.

I look forward to seeing your child/ren in attendance on all three days and I thank you in advance for your support and collaboration with these Workshop and Lesson Make-Up Mornings and with the Family Fun Day event.

La asistencia a cada una de estas mañanas es obligatoria para los estudiantes de Año 1 a Año 13. El servicio de transporte trabajará de forma normal durante estos dos días, por lo que nuestra Asistente de Apoyo Estudiantil - Marcela Ojeda - se comunicará con ustedes para detalles de horarios para recoger y dejar a los estudiantes en sus hogares.

También quiero aprovechar esta oportunidad para recordar a toda la Comunidad que el Día de la Familia (13 de abril) es también un día de asistencia obligatoria para todos los estudiantes. La Ley de Educación permite hasta veinte (20) sábados para ser utilizados dentro los 200 días que debemos cumplir. El Día de la Familia fue, desde un inicio, incluido como uno de ellos para asistencia de los alumnos. Además, será también un día de mucha diversión para todos, con una variedad de comida y muchas actividades planificadas.

Espero ver a todos los estudiantes durante estos tres día adicionales y les agradezco por su apoyo y por su colaboración con estas actividades.

Pamela Muñoz has just joined the BSQ team as the new Marketing and Public Relations Coordinator. She has wide experience in Marketing and Education, having worked at Colegio Menor and Academia Cotopaxi.
