KURUNJANG PRIMARY SCHOOL ~ “Learning Together” NEWSLETTER 34 - 2018 Thursday 1 st November 2018 PRINCIPAL’S REPORT I returned to school this week after leave for orthopaedic surgery and I thank people for their kind wishes. The students have been lovely in their verbal and written comments to me a wonderful demonstration of empathy and capacity of your children to look out and care for another person. It is testament to the values training and modelling by you the parents, to your children. I would also like to take this opportunity to publicly thank Wendy McCall for taking on the role of Acting Principal during my absence and for all members of the leadership and administration teams for their respective work in ensuring the running of the school amidst the various building works and necessary moving of offices and resources. Very happy staff news is the safe arrival of Stephanie Gilmour’s twin girls - Juliet Catherine Rose and Escher Ingrid Quinn, born prematurely and very tiny but doing well. Our speech pathologist Catherine Mitchell also has had her little girl Rosie May. Thursday and Friday (3 classes each on both days) last week saw the year 3/4 excursion to the Melbourne CBD in support of their Inquiry topic of different places and locations in Australia. The children visited the Eureka Skydeck, China Town, Hosier Lane and Parliament House. The year 6 students are continuing their health study with the Puberty Program for Students through Djerriwarrh Health in Melton and we are very impressed with the maturity with which all students are approaching this important aspect of their learning for life. Last week’s professional learning team meeting for staff was focussed on moderating students’ writing. Moderation of writing is a process which ensures that the aspects of writing are discussed for each student against the curriculum standard to ensure the writing level achieved is agreed and accurate. The teachers in year 1/2 paired up with 5/6 and Foundation with 3/4 to moderate and confirm the teacher’s samples. Below is a photo of the staff conducting the moderation with writing samples physically laid along the proficiency continuum/levels. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Yesterday was the closing of parental requests for 2019. I have read all the requests received and without disclosing any information which would make the comments identifiable for parents, students and staff, I wanted to include a sample of the comments made, particularly those which have acknowledged the reality that with all the variables involved for 590 students, not all requests will be possible. Over the next few weeks, we will however, be doing our best to place all children, whether a request was made or not, according to their particular academic, behavioural and social needs. My oldest son had _____as a teacher and I feel her compassion and empathy towards students and supportive teaching environment would greatly support______We understand that there are many requests and not all can be fulfilled, however we thank you for your time and consideration” “_______has had a remarkable year and achieved so much” _______began the year as a quiet and shy child and has now gained so much confidence that she has the ability to stand up at assembly and talk in front of school” We remind all parents and carers that Monday is a non-pupil (curriculum) day for Kurunjang PS. Students are not required to attend school on this day. The staff will be involved in continued professional learning and planning in the AVID strategies for Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization and Reading in the morning and AVID maths in the afternoon. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

I returned to school this week after leave for orthopaedic surgery and I thank people for their kind wishes. The students have been lovely in their verbal and written comments to me – a wonderful demonstration of empathy and capacity of your children to look out and care for another person. It is testament to the values training and modelling by you the parents, to your children. YEAR 3/4 MELBOURNE CITY EXCURSION

Last week the Grade 3 and 4 students took a bus trip to the Melbourne CBD as part of their geography inquiry unit of “Location of places in Australia”. We visited locations such as Chinatown, Hosier Lane, Federation Square, Flinders Street Station and Eureka Tower. The view of the city from the Eureka Tower was amazing and helped students understand the layout of the city and landmark locations. Students

were thoroughly engaged with their environment as they represented KPS walking through the capital city. Everyone enjoyed the experience immensely.
