Congratulations to our Graduates

On Thursday we celebrated the wonderful contribution our Senior Graduates have made to the College over the five years from 2013. This began with the Graduation Mass following by morning tea and concluded with the Graduation Dinner and dancing at the Gold Coast Convention Centre.

These new arrangements for graduation were well received by most parents. However, perhaps it was the quality of the band that had them on the dance floor immediately following the formalities of the evening. Padre Morgan Batt, the new Parish Priest made his first formal appearance at the dinner just four days after commencing in the role.

Congratulations to the Seniors. There’s is a proud record of positive attitude, good behaviour and solid effort. In their final year, completion of VET courses and QCS results auger well for the opportunities that will be available to them beyond their school days. This is well deserved. We applaud their efforts and they are appreciative of the support of their parents and teachers. This was reflected in the College Captains (Eshwin Rangesh & Sarah McKean’s) respective speeches.

Our appreciation to Mrs Cathy Cooper, Mr Nigel Ward, the Year 12 Pastoral teachers who guided the students through the year; to their subject teachers in Year 12 and all the teachers and staff of the College who have taught and assisted them over the years. Thanks also to Father Stanley who presided at the Graduation Mass and for his remarkable way of inviting parents and the Seniors to participate in and enjoy the beautiful liturgy that Mrs Maitland and Mrs Cooper had planned. There were many involved in the Mass. Particular appreciation to Mr Faughey, Miss Treacy, Ms Young and senior musicians for their accompaniment. Thanks also to Mrs McCosker for providing a welcome morning tea for families.

Wonderful Yearbook

This Yearbook is more than a record of 2017, It is the testimony of a faithful community that believes in the essential goodness of our mission each day. The images of goodness, youth and joy capture the story of the year. We thank contributors, and the dedication of Mrs Janet Cartlidge, Mrs Karen Harrison, and Mrs Irene Scott.

Enrolments for 2018

Enrolments for 2018 are now closed for local applicants. Applications from families transferring into the Gold Coast will be considered. As one would expect, Catholic faith or demonstrated appreciation for the Catholic tradition is important. Evidence of a positive attitude to learning reflected in effort and progress in current school reports is essential.

2018 Subject Choices

We have released timetable/subject choices to students in Year 10 2018 and Year 11 2018. This includes requests for alterations, particularly for those students in Year 10 who have now met the minimum standard requirements of prerequisite for Year 11 2018 subjects. For students in Year 11, 2017 we will be continuing with their two year program as their subject lines roll across into Year 12, 2018.

Balancing Class Numbers

We will look at a small number of changes to core subjects (English, Maths and Religion) and some elective subjects which run across different lines, in order to adjust class sizes, and to balance equity. No student’s load will be altered, no classes will run any different course, other than the course expected by students. Naturally, students will have a range of different teachers in Year 12 compared to Year 11. In all this, a small handful of students may find they have been changed from their original class group – the only difference. If any student wishes to move voluntarily to another ‘core’ class to assist with this rebalancing they should contact me as soon as possible.

Year 12 Graduation

Year 12 graduation ceremonies were very special

events and it was a privilege to be part of them.

Year 12 QCS Results

Year 12 2017 QCS data results were released last week and the College is encouraged by the standard of results indicated. We look forward to the release of the student’s full graduation results next month. We will of course be reviewing the data and continuing our promotion of academic excellence in our school, reflecting of the achievements of the 2017 cohort. In the meantime, we are mandated to publish results data of the exiting Year 12 group, indicating particular their Subject Achievement Indicator SAIs) for each subject. This ranks each student on a subject ladder, and compares their final position within the subject group based on in-school assessment. This is the data used to scale their results based on the cohort’s and subject groups’ results in the Core Skills Test. SAIs are inputted manually, and human error can occur. That is the main reason for the publication – double checking by students.

This data is available for students to check, in the student administration office from 9:00am Wednesday 22 November.

Peter ShawAssistant Principal Senior Curriculum

ASSiSTANT PRiNCiPAL JuNioR CuRRiCuLuMAs we get closer to the end of year the students in Year 7-9 are finalising all their semester assessment. It is essential students complete all assessment so teachers can report accurately on student progress.

Furthermore, In Week 9 students in year 7 & 8 will participate in the Hour of Code. Students all over the world participate in the program which is designed to introduce students to computer science. The students can choose a variety of activities and tutorials and receive certificates for reaching certain levels. For further information please visit https://hourofcode.com/au.

Elective Choices 2018

Elective choices for students entering Year 8, 9 in 2018 were sent out today. These reflect the choices students made at the end of term 3. There is a small opportunity for students to make subject changes and I have already received some in the past few weeks. These will be processed on a first in basis and students will be placed on waiting lists if classes are full.

Enjoy the weekend!

ReligiouS life of the college

“Through this anointing, may God strengthen you on your journey of faith.”

Congratulations and farewell, we will never forget you…some of our sentiments for the Class of 2017 as we blessed and anointed them and sent them out to their futures.

The Graduation Mass, concelebrated by Fr Stanley and Fr Dantus will be remembered as the first Graduation Mass in Mary Mother of Mercy Church, and the Church was packed to the rafters!

As always the many people who have worked to bring such an occasion together have worked tirelessly for weeks to make it happen. Our Music department including Ms Jodie Young, Ms Suzanne Treacy and Mr Paul Faughey with some of the graduating students in the band brought a special magic to the singing of the Psalms.

The ten Year 10 Students who helped organise the gifts, sort them into classes, carry them to the Church and set them out were quite outstanding. Four Year 10 students assisted the inimitable Mrs Cathie Mc Cosker with the hospitality, working with her from 8.15 on Thursday morning. Carina Serong and Kailah Harvey, both Year 10 students, looked after the AV and sound and ensured there would not be any issues in this area. Thank you to each of these for their enormous generosity of time and spirit.

Thank you to the eight Year 11 leaders who assisted as ushers

and in the liturgy itself and Leneisha Faamausili who applied her artistic talent to candle decoration.

Mrs Karen Harrison’s production of the Mass booklet is much appreciated.

Arrival of Fr Morgan Batt

The other notable event of the past week has been the arrival of our new Parish Priest, Fr Morgan Batt. Fr Morgan was welcomed by the Parish as he celebrated Mass on Sunday last.

Year 7 Mass

Year 7s and their families have a special invitation to attend the 10 am Mass this coming Sunday. Some of the students will take on various roles during the Mass and a Powerpoint presentation of photographs of their first year at high school will be shown. Games, a sausage sizzle and refreshments will be on after Mass providing a chance parents and the other Parishioners to get to know each other a little better.

Advent

Two weeks to go …. Advent is almost on us, and we have a very short time to make a strong response to the gifts for Families Back on Track, St Vincent de Paul. Purchasing craft items made by the mothers of Ossu in Timor Leste would be the gift which gives twice. I have a selection of beautiful Tais and many other items for sale here at the College.

In my role as Contributing Editor to the College Yearbook, I find the articles and reports from our insiders and members of the student leadership team insightful, inspiring and thoroughly worth a read!

Following the final two events for Year 12s this week – the Graduation Liturgy and the Graduation dinner, it is fitting to share some thoughts written by the students. These appear in full below; only extracts have been published in the College Yearbook due to required word limit.

Best wishes for a successful and rewarding future.

I would just say to future students to get involved and to not let an opportunity slip by because Marymount gives us the chance to make memories that last a lifetime, especially in your senior year. In fantastic public speaking news, Year 7 student Charlotte Threlfall and Year 10 student Jackson lake have both been invited to represent Queensland in the national Finals of the un Youth Voice Public Speaking Competition!

Both students have worked incredibly hard to proceed through preliminary, semi-final and state final rounds. Not only have their ideas on some very complex issues impressed the judges, but their articulation of those ideas has showed exemplary advocacy skills. This is the third consecutive year in which Marymount has sent students to nationals for this competition. Well done, Jackson and Charlotte! These students will be seeking substantial financial support over the next few months to fund their trip, as they have to cover accommodation and food for the week. Please keep an eye out for their fundraising efforts, and show them your support wherever you can.

Janie-Marie BurgesslSC Teacher Aide | Debating Coordinator

Last weekend i went to the uN Youth Public Speaking State Finals, and I had a blast.

I met other boys and girls from all over Queensland, and I learnt a lot about public speaking. During the workshops I developed teamwork skills and learnt many things about others and myself. Although it was a great weekend, the National finals will be even better. In April of 2018, my new friends and I will be competing at the national final hosted in Brisbane, and I’m very excited. I am beyond grateful for this opportunity and I am sure it will provide me with many others in the future.

Charlotte ThrelfallYear 7

The un Youth Voice Public Speaking Competition gave students all across Australia an opportunity to consider a societal problem that they most likely haven’t considered before, and then propose a solution through public speaking.

There was a multitude of topics to consider, which ranged from ‘How would you improve young people's understanding of Australian history?’ to ‘How do we decrease the impact of illicit drugs in Australian communities?’ The competition allowed me to conceive an idea and then articulate the idea creatively in front of an audience, which is a great learning opportunity. From a boost in confidence and self esteem to pondering problems in our world today, students were able to truly open their eyes and be a voice in an encouraging environment. With nationals just around the corner in April 2018, I am getting excited. Public speaking is a great experience and I would recommend it for all.

NCSS SuMMER SCHooL

Congratulations to Matilda Teitzel on gaining entry to the national Computer Science School at the university of Sydney!

Students are able to apply for the Summer School, run each year in January. NCSS is an intensive week of computer programming, web design and industry visits to Google, Altassan and WiseTech Global, while staying on campus in Sydney. They are mentored by current university students and professors during the camp.

Only a few students each year are accepted from Queensland for the NSW event, which is an enormous achievement for Matilda - especially as this is the second year that she will be attending!

We wish her well this January as she flies down to NCSS, and hope she doesn’t forget us when she’s a high-end software engineer. Congratulations!!

Terri-Anne has had a fantastic year on the sporting fields, representing her school, district, region and state with great passion and commitment. She will now get the chance to add her country to that list, as she has recently been selected to play in the Australian Youth Girls 7s Team for their tour of NZ for the World School 7s. Congratulations to you on your selection Terri-Anne, it must be a very exciting time for you.

Sports Cabinet

For many years, the team sporting successes of Marymount College have been recognised and celebrated through the display of our trophies and medals in the windows at reception and in the Sport Cabinet, just to the left in the entry foyer of the Doyle Centre.

In a shared effort through Mrs Karen Harrison, Mr Jason Hamilton, Mr Aaron Turner and myself, we have now converted the Sports Cabinet into a celebration of individuals, as well as teams. As you can see in the image, next to the existing trophies, photographs have been added of students from our college who have represented Queensland or Australia through sport, and as impressive as this may be, we know there are some more out there.

I think this is a great way to celebrate the wonderful achievements of these athletes, and I

hope it may now prove to be motivational for our future stars. Next time you are passing through the Doyle Centre, please stop and take a minute to look and read the plaques, so you can become aware of how well Marymount College students are performing on the big stage.

YoGA• Whenisournextassignmentdue?• Howmanyweeksuntilourexam?• ShallIeverseetheendofthispileofmarking? We often become so engrossed in the busyness of life, that we forget to take time out to breathe and be still. There is always somewhere to be, and something we convince ourselves we should be doing. But there is truth in the adage, ‘you can’t pour from an empty cup’. Rest and self-care are so important, and we must be kind to ourselves first. We must replenish our bodies, our minds and our souls, so that we can effectively serve others. One of the best ways we can do this is by practising yoga. A group of staff and students are fortunate enough to participate in a yoga class this term as part of our recreational sport program. Every Thursday afternoon, we remove our shoes and our worries, and become fully present in the moment. We have particularly focused on developing synchronicity of breathing and movement, not only to increase our flexibility, but also to achieve a peaceful body and mind. We have also become quite nifty at

some rather challenging yoga poses!
