This is the 18th article in the series Khalsa Mero Roop Hai Khaas (Who is a Khalsa?),started in Apr 2008. In our previous articles, we discussed some of the virtues of the

Khalsa. This article continues the discussion of other virtues.

A Sikh has no ill will towards anyoneHe is humble and kind to all

    Jaswant Singh

Everyone begs for ones own good. But a Sikh also asks for the good of all. He hates noone, and bears no ill will towards anyone. He beholds the same Divine light in everyone.Truly speaking, a God-conscious being never labels anyone negatively. He reasons,Who should I call good or bad, since all beings are yours, O God?

A Sikh learns this message from the Gurus word - that the omnipresent Creator is allembracing. He always reminds himself that no one is his enemy, and he is no one'sopponent. All are his friends and he is everyones friend.

He is spiritually enlightened that it is the same universal Creator who has created allmortal beings. From the single light the entire universe has welled up. So who is good, and who is bad? The creation dwells in the Creator, and the Creator manifests throughthe creation, totally pervading and permeating all places. It is like the clay which is thesame, but the divine Potter has fashioned it in various ways. There can be nothingwrong with the pots as there is nothing wrong with the Potter. The Potter abides in allHis pots. Everything is made by Him.

The Gurbani further states that a Guru-oriented person attains the divine wisdom andlooks upon pleasure and pain as alike. He leads an immaculate life, free of any

vengeance and shares its teachings with friends and enemies alike.

A Sikh is aware that the one whose heart is filled with jealousy of others never comes toany good. One of the contributors of Guru Granth Sahib, Baba Fareed advises,Respond to evil with goodness; do not fill your mind with anger. Your body shall notsuffer from any mental illness, and you shall obtain everything.

The image of the Divine in the Sikh Scripture is described as the merciful giver, compassionate to all. The Gurus word reveals to a Sikh that the Lord gives sanctuary toall beings. Enlightened by these divine teachings, a Sikh leads a pious and virtuous life. His prayers and actions include the welfare of all humanity. He is kind to all beings. Hishumility shows generosity and compassion to one and all. Instead of seeing himself assuperior and others inferior, he remains modest and sees the rest of the world as good.

VESAK H I DAY CEL EB RATI ON

The Central Sikh Gurdwara Board embarked upon the celebration of Vesakhi on a grand

scale. The festivities continued for more than a week commencing from 9 April 2011. Vesakhi

holds great importance for the Sikhs. This day is commonly known for the establishment of

Khalsa Panth. The Mighty Khalsa team put in their best efforts in organizing the Vesakhi

Funfair at CST on 17 April 2011. Apart from Gurbani recital, a number of other stalls were

established to cater to children of different age groups for instilling and imbibing in them the

values of Sikh Culture, tradition and heritage. Along with the colorful festivities, Guru Ka langar

was also served to the Sadh-sangat. It was indeed a sterling effort in the right direction and

will go a long way in binding our generations to the Sikh faith.

Searching Shabads by keywordsMaan Sarovar is an index of Shabads in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji which are

elated to different words, terms, feelings etc. For example if you want to find a

shabad related to word a us q q (praise), just go to heading a us q q and you will find

shabads related to this word along with the page number in Sri Guru Granth

    Sahib.

Maan Sarovar is compiled by Dr. Kulwant Singh, Academy of Sikh Studies USA.

Dr. Kulwant Singh is a retired ophthalmologist and also a Sikh Studies Scholar and

writer of many books on Sikhism.

    Of fer i ng a Rumal a - i s i t a must ?Message f r om t he Cent r al Si k h Gur dw ar a Boar d

We all have profound love and deep devotion for our Guru - Guru Granth Sahib Ji. One of the ways a Sikhexpresses his love and devotion is by offering a Rumala, mostly at the conclusion of a prayer.

Is it compulsory to offer a Rumala every time we solemnize a function in a Gurdwara or at home? The Sikh Codeof Conduct states:

On the conclusion of the reading, offering of draperies, fly-whisk and awning, having regard to therequirements of the Guru Granth Sahib, and of other things, for Panthic causes should be made to the bestof means.

So our offerings must have regards to the requirements of Guruji or must be for Panthic causes. The large numberof Rumalas being offered far exceeds the requirements of Guru Ji and these offerings do not serve any Panthiccause. Instead these offerings create the difficulty of storing them with respect and disposing them with reverence.

Premium space that can be used for the benefit of the Sangat in Gurdwaras is taken up to store them. Over time, they start deteriorating. They cannot be used for other purposes. We cannot cremate them with due respect as openburning in Singapore is illegal.

The Board urges the Sangat to avoid offering Rumalas as far as possible and instead offer cash donations thatwould be channelled to bring more programs to spread, strengthen and promote Sikhism.

In our lifetime, we as people are sometimes graced with the

presence of an excellent and inspiring teacher. These people

end up shaping our lives for the better because of their highenthusiasm and passion for teaching, and we deeply admire

them for that. They act as inspirational role models, have a

high Emotional Quotient (EQ) to empathise and motivate their

students, and instill inside us values, knowledge, hopes and

dreams. Once they've been taught to us, we are changed for

    the rest of our lives.

More than a year ago, the

    Central Sikh Gurdwara Board

received an email from a post-

    doctoral research fellow in

    biomedical optics at Harvard

    Medical School and

Massachusetts General Hospital (Boston, US). Steve Lee

wrote I am turning to you in the hope that, through the close-

knit network in the Sikh community, it would be possible to find

Mr Balbir Singh, who was my teacher at Mountbatten Primary

School. I would like to get in touch with him so that I can

personally convey my deepest gratitude for his excellence inteaching more than twenty years ago, that sowed the seeds for

my current inspiration in scientific research. I first got interested

in science from Mr.Balbir Singh and still remember one of his

lessons on how fish survive during the winter due to the unique freezing point of water. Apart

from science, I gained early insight into life lessons. I remember how he brought in one of Mother

Teresa's helpers right into class. This particular lesson taught me how humility and giving is an

important virtue to maintain for life. His passion in teaching has furnished me with the right

motivation to learn to better oneself!

It is only with such a caring and motivated teacher that I learnt to push the borders of learning:

doing research. I am grateful for his teaching although it only lasted for one year. More

importantly, I am very happy to have been able to personally give him my very best thanks, after

2 years of search, upon completion of my PhD degree

Good on you, Mr.Balbir Singh Ji. We are proud of you!

P.S: Though retired from teaching, Mr Balbir Singh still works as an Educational Consultant with

an international school in Surabaya, Indonesia.

    TRIBUTE TO A BELOVED TEACHER
