stories to share with the rest of our KYC crew).

COMMODORE’S MESSAGE

Hi All,

Hope everyone is safe and well. Behind the scenes the committee

are working hard toward a normal September start to the sailing

season with the addition of social distancing processes which will

be our and the world’s new normal.

I optimistically look forward to seeing everyone back on the water.

More news to follow.

KETTERING YACHT CLUB NEWSLETTER – MAY EDITION

NEWS Seems to me that there is an ever -brightening light and a hint of fresh

air looking ahead down this somewhat claustrophobic Covid tunnel

for boaties.

The reason for this optimism is that last week I had a chat with Chris

Jones, Australian Sailing (Tassie Regional Manager) who, barring

second wave covid issues, is confident that the sailing season will get

away as per normal in September with some restricted racing

possible even earlier.

He is compiling an email to send out to clubs focusing on what we

can do during the different stages of easing, which includes being

able to overnight on boats from 15 June.

Chris has prepared a letter outlining what yacht clubs will be able to

do during stage 2 and 3 of easing which has been sent to the State

Government for approval. I look forward to circulating this missive as

soon as he sends it to clubs.

Sadly the people organising world champs like the Cadets (scheduled

to be held in Melbourne in December) are calling them off now as

international travel (possibly apart from NZ) is most likely to be off for

most of the upcoming sailing season. He also made the interesting

point about what kind of quarantining measures might still be in place

with regards to M2H and S2H when crews get here! L2H might be

the only game in town!

Given this positive information it is time to polish the boats, dust off the gear and get ready for the first races for

the 2020 – 2021 season coming soon.

PIPE OPENER Derwent Sailing Squadron, with Huon Yacht Club’s agreement, has been working with KYC Committee and

more specifically Commodore Mike and PRO Greg around us being the partner yacht club for this regatta. The

idea being that the course for the Friday night race from Hobart can be changed in length according to the

weather conditions and speed of the different racing divisions. This will be achieved by sailing around marks or

islands in and perhaps south of the Channel. The finish line will be off Kettering, no matter where the boats

have been.

The Saturday race will be a channel race and the Sunday race would head back to Hobart for a finish

somewhere in the Derwent. The Pipe Opener has traditionally been held on the second last weekend in

September.

FROM THE COMMITTEE The committee has an extensive Job Jar to wade through in order for us

to be able to crank up the 2020 2021 season. Mike B is hard at work in

the handbook and is seeking any member input before finalising it.

Please have a chat with him if you have any suggestions.

As mentioned in the last member letter, we will look to have a combined

event that will include the AGM, celebration of the 2019 – 2020 season

and the new season launch in mid-September but will need to wait a bit

longer to be able to finalise what this event will look like.

We will look to hold a club house polishing session soon so keep an eye

out for a notice about this activity!

A MEMBER’S STORY By Finlay Cooper

What in the world has Doug Jack been up in these Covid times?

Answer: Building a Tum in his tin shed; that is what!

Doug tells me that;

The Tumlaren is 8m length x 1.9 beam Weighs 1.7 tonne including a 1 tonne lead keel. They are a 1934 Knud

Reimers design.

She is being built with celery top backbone and king billy planking. She is a smaller version of a past KYC member,

Roger Aldridge’s Meander.

Why is he doing this build you may ask? I have tried to buy one for many years now and have never found one in tip top condition so there was only one thing

to do!

It is believed to be the first to be built in the world for several decades. There is a fleet of about 7 Tums that

compete in weekly races on Port Phillip Bay.(Doug promises that if you want more of a story he can go on for as

long as

you

like.)

Uncle Robin on the hard waiting for his annual coiffing

Coming along nicely!

3 KYC SPONSORS IN FOCUS STORM BAY SAILS Hello KYC Members,

We must be one of the luckiest yachting communities in the world, relatively healthy and living in a beautiful place.

It has been an interesting few months talking with those who have visited the loft. It seems everyone has been

adapting positively to these difficult times, quite apart from the depressing lack of sailing. We have become aware

of just how important it is to get out on the water.

However, quite a few members are enthusiastically maintaining their yachts and getting their sails serviced while

they can, preparing for the time we can head out into wild blue! Dylan and I have been kept busy working away on

sails and covers. We still have many new sails coming off the plotter but sail covers are certainly a common focus

for boat owners this month. I guess we have all had more time now to stand back and look at how the covers are

doing while tied up these past weeks.

Please drop into the loft or call if your sails or covers need some attention before the fast-approaching sailing

season and we will help get you sailing ready.

All the best

Russ

OYSTER COVE(ID) MARINA UPDATE The Marina, like the rest of the world, has been a very different place over the last few months.

The office has been closed since early March, with Emma working from home to keep the administrative side of

the business running. Obviously the Gym has been closed since early on in the lockdown and the café has been

operating very limited hours, serving takeaways only.

However, the boatyard has continued to be a hive of activity through the lockdown with many boaties taking the

opportunity to use their unexpected spare time working on their boats. The wide-open spaces of the boatyard

meant social distancing was not an issue.

Most importantly, Phil, John and Rupert have been making steady progress on the marina extension during the

restricted period and are now well beyond the half-way mark. Its looking fantastic as any recent visitors will have

observed. The good news is that with the restrictions beginning to ease, we will be back to “normal” operations

over the next few weeks.

MARINA OFFICE

The office will return to normal opening hours from June 1 being 9.00am – 4.30pm Monday to Friday

Anyone visiting the office is asked to observe appropriate social distancing protocols.

BOATYARD As mentioned, the boatyard has been operating normally right through and all the associated marine contractors

and trades are available for your requirements.

CHANDLERY

The Chandlery has also continued to operate throughout and will continue under their current reduced opening

hours through winter.

Opening hours are:

Mon – Fri - 9:00am – 3:00pm

Saturday - 9:00am – 1:00pm

Sunday - CLOSED

SEAWALL CAFÉ From June 1 the café will be fully operational under the new restricted

guidelines. However, this will still allow for ten patrons inside and ten

on the deck so you will have a great opportunity to once again enjoy

the delights that Paul and Steve have to offer.

The café has been re-imagined inside which will make it a cozy, safe

environment for you to enjoy a meal with family and friends through

winter.

Opening hours from June 1 are:

Wed – Thur 11:00am – 5:00pm

Friday 11:00am – 8:00pm

Saturday 8:30am – 8:00pm

Sunday 8:30am – 5:00pm

SAILTRIM FITNESS

The Gym will re-open on Monday June 15 which gives you just

enough time to be in peak physical condition for the opening of the

season. It is also time to work off those Iso-kilos you’ve put on

through constant grazing out of sheer boredom during the

lockdown.

Call Steve on 0417 141 285 to discuss your membership and

health & fitness regime requirements

R.M. MARINE

RM Marine is operating as normal from the big green shed in the boatyard. We provide quality shipwright

services including painting, varnishing, antifouling and polishing.

We also specialise in repairs, fitouts, restorations, custom builds, alterations and standing and running rigging

for both wire and aramid materials.

Give Bodge (Rod) and the team a call when working on getting your boat refreshed and ready to go as we

emerge from ISO and start the new season (on time is the hope!).
