ROTARY YOUTH PROGRAM OF ENRICHMENT A team of four amazing Year 9 students have been selected to attend the RYPEN leadership camp in February 2018. RYPEN (Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment) is a youth leadership conference for young people. The conference is a weekend long camp designed at developing young people’s potential through a mixture of lecture style sessions and adventure-based learning. Daniel, Eva, Alice and Zac were selected for their leadership potential and as part of the application process. They presented themselves at interview with representatives from Terrigal Rotary.

On Thursday 23rd November, the students, their parents and year advisor, Mr Grant Ward, attended an evening at Breakers Country Club to meet local Rotarians and enjoy a meal. Introduced by Youth Director, Robyn Ratcliff, students presented themselves to the members and explained what they hoped to get out of the RYPEN program. These incredible ambassadors for the school presented themselves beautifully and showed great maturity in the way that they interacted with the Terrigal Rotary community. The students will return to Breakers in the new year to report on their experiences at RYPEN.

Terrigal High School would like to thank Terrigal Rotary for their ongoing support of young people. Grant Ward, HSIE.

LIBRARY NEWS It is that time of year again when we need to make sure that all library books are returned. If you have any library or English books at home can you please return them as soon as possible.

There is no more borrowing from the library for the remainder of 2017.

I’d also like to congratulate the junior students who successfully completed the Premier’s Reading Challenge this year and remind students that books they are currently reading can count towards next year’s challenge.

Thank you to the majority of senior students who treated the library in a respectful manner whilst using the senior study. Please remember to see me if you need any academic or research support. I’m happy to organise a time during your study periods so that we can work together. I’d also like to encourage you to join our local public library and the State Library of NSW as they have wonderful, reliable sources of information to support your learning.

YEAR 9 CAMP Last week some of the Year 9 students went to a camp for three days. We took part in many different activities. The first night we spent in cabins, the second night we camped outside in tents. Camping outside gave many of us a new experience and taught us new things. We set up our own tents, cooked our own dinners and collected wood for a campfire. We completed activities such as the tri jump and the giant swing that encouraged many people to test their limits and conquer their fears.

This camp was a really great experience that allowed us to try new things and bond with our year group. Thank you to the teachers that organised this trip, we really appreciate it.

Year 9 Camp students Jemma Burgess-Robinson and Petria Symington.

WHITE RIBBON DAY

In recognition of White Ribbon Day, 25th November, Terrigal High School Staff wore White T-Shirts on Thursday 23rd and Friday 24th November to recognise and ‘break the silence’ on domestic violence.

Free community events on the Central Coast raised awareness and demonstrated support for ending violence against women in all facets of our society.

As part of White Ribbon Day, the Skillion in Terrigal displayed a large, white number forty-three to recognise the number of women killed in Australia so far in 2017, two of whom were Central Coast locals. Thank you to the Terrigal High School SRC who made 200 White Ribbons.

If you require information, advice or assistance, please call the Domestic Violence Line 1800 656 463. Students are encouraged to talk to their Teachers, Year Advisor’s, School Counsellor’s and Principal.

DANCE INTERN We have been very lucky to have Rowena Sheumack from the University of New South Wales completing her final year Practicum in Masters of Secondary Teaching Dance and Drama. Mrs Sheumack has been teaching the drama students Duo logs for stage and film and Musical Theatre to the Dancers. Mrs Y Walker.

DANCE It has been another very busy term for the Dancers at Terrigal High School and as always, I have been impressed by so much creative talent and enthusiasm in Dance. YEAR 12 HSC DANCE Inspired by the Year 12 2017 Dancers achieving 5 HSC Call back nominations the Year 12 2018 students have been working extremely hard on their new Performance works. We have been very lucky to have Emily Joliff return to give them a few extra tips for the Practical HSC examinations. HSC Dance Year 12 class 2018 DANCE ENSEMBLE The newly formed THS Dance Ensemble performed at Evening of the Stars alongside all our other very talented CAPA performers. It has been a long term wish of mine to see our student choreographer’s works highlighted on the stage and Kyra Johnson’s “Swalla” Hip Hop piece was a true testament to the creative composition flair of our students. Kyra is a very clever young lady! Our Ensemble will now begin a contemporary piece choreographed by Year 10 students that will be performed at the Gosford Eisteddfod early next year. BRENT STREET THEATRE We have been very lucky to again secure tickets and a class lesson at the prestigious Brent Street Theatre owned by ex-student Lucas Newland on Tuesday December 12th. Could the students that have been selected to attend this excursion please ensure the permission slip and payment is handed in to the office ASAP. Mrs Walker.
