Geography Bee Winners Congratulations to Regan Crowe, 5th grade, the winner of the school Geography Bee, which was held here last Wednesday! The 1st runner up was Acadia Calderwood, 6th grade with Dacey Holland in 6th grade coming in as the 2nd runner up. Other classroom winners who also participated were Michael Simmons, Nathan McDonald & Colby Mank- 4th grade, Bryan Gordon and Jacob Overlock – 5th grade and Maia Miller-6th grade. Congratulations to all who participated!

We are pleased to announce that Children’s Stage Adventures will be conducting a theatre residency at Union Elementary School the week of February 6-10! They will be producing an original musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s Midsummer Dream. The PTC is funding this program. Parents and family members can help defray costs by sponsoring an ad in the playbill. Another notice is attached to this newsletter about how to sponsor the program with an ad or donation. Auditions will be held on Monday, February 6th @ 9:00 AM. The final production will be held here @ UES at 7:00 PM. Admission to the event will be $2 for students, $4 for adults or $10 for a family. Students will receive a letter tomorrow explaining more about the residency and time commitments associated with receiving a role.

Jump for Heart-message from Miss Humphrey Union Elementary School will be starting their Jump for Heart fundraiser on Wednesday, 2/1/12. Students in all grades will have two weeks to collect money for the fundraiser. I appreciate you support during this physical education unit, as it is important for our students to recognize heart and health problems. Money will be collected on Wednesday, 2/15/12. Notice for 6th Grade Parents Please send in any pictures of your child or groups of children in the 6th grade (when they were in grades K-6) for us to use in our memory book. Pitching Clinics @ MVHS Medomak Valley Head Softball coach Richard Vannah is hosting pitching clinics on Sunday afternoons at MVHS through Feb 19, from 2-3 PM. Pitchers MUST bring a catcher!!!! There will be no cost for the clinics. This is only open to girls in grades 3-8. DJO Memorial 3 on 3 Youth Baskteball Tournament The Medomak Valley boys youth basketball program will be hosting a 3 on 3 basketball tournament in memory of Dustin J. Osier on Saturday Feb.4th and Sunday Feb. 5th(if needed). The tournament will be held at Miller School in Waldoboro. Teams may consist of 3 or 4 players, depending on whether or not the team wants a sub. Boys and girls in grades 3 through 8 are invited to participate. Teams will compete at the following levels: 3rd/4th, 5th/6th, and 7th/8th. The entry fee for each team will be $15.00 with all proceeds going to the Dustin Osier Scholarship fund. Memorial t-shirts and concessions will be available for purchase. An admission fee of $2/adults and $1/students will apply. Champion tees will be awarded to the winning team at each level. February Vacation Camp is back at Tanglewood! Two-day programs for children 6 - 13, Tuesday, February 21st - Friday, February 24th, 9 am - 2 p.m. (optional after care until 4 p.m.) Come learn to be a wildlife tracker, discover secrets to staying warm in the snow, building winter shelters and how plants & animals survive the winter. Annual “Hooked on Fishing” Event The Mike Sabins Memorial Youth Fish & Game Association will hold a “Hooked on Fishing” ice fishing event sponsored by Inland Fisheries and Wildlife on Saturday, February 25th on Seven Tree Pond at Ayer Park, Route #235 in Union from 10 am – 2 pm. Instruction, equipment, and refreshments will be provided. There is no fee to attend. Please plan to come and have some family fun in the Maine outdoors. Severe storm cancellation date will be Sunday, February 26th. FMI: call Scot & Mary Sabins at 785-4076. SEATS STILL AVAILABLE FOR CELTICS TRIP The Waldoboro Recreation Department still has seats available for a bus trip to see the Boston Celtics take on the Washington Wizards on Sunday, March 25th, 2011. Game time is scheduled for 6:00pm. Cost is $89 per person and includes transportation to/from the Banknorth Garden via motorcoach and admission to the game. The bus will depart the Waldoboro VFW parking lot at 12:00pm and stop at Fanuiel Hall Marketplace prior to the game. Tickets will be sold on a first come, first serve basis. A $50 per person deposit is required at time of registration. Balance of payment is due no later than Feb 10th to hold seat. Cancellations after that date are subject to a $5 per person processing fee. Daisy Lee featured to sing National Anthem/ Warren Community School Cheerleaders-K-2 & 3-6 to perform.

The Special Olympian Athletes, the Coastal Navigators, will be hosting The HARLEM ROCKETS comedy basketball show on Wednesday March 7th at 7:00pm at Medomak Valley High School. This fundraiser not only helps the athletes raise funds for the summer Olympic games, but will bring a great family event to students and their community. Tickets for the event are available at the following locations: Moody's Diner in Waldoboro, Townline Video Plus, Lincoln's Country Store in Warren, Union Common Market, HAV II, Penobscot Bay YMCA, Coastal Opportunities in Camden, and at the following schools, Warren Community, Medomak Valley, Friendship Village and CHRHS- contact Tessa Carroll. We would like to thank all for providing these ticket locations. (Advance tickets: $8.00 students/$10.00 Adults, at the door, $10.00 students/$12.00 Adults) Extra special updates are two young and talented groups performing. One is our featured singer Daisy Lee of Friendship. Daisy will sing the National Anthem at the Harlem Rockets game on Wednesday March 7th at Medomak Valley High School. Daisy Lee is a student at Friendship Village School. She is a singer and songwriter and has performed at coffee houses and nursing homes entertaining people of all ages. A second addition to the event is the Warren Community School Cheerleaders, the Panthers. The Panthers will perform their cheer leading routine at intermission. We are truly excited and grateful to have both groups attend the Harlem Rockets fundraiser game. If you have any questions about this event please feel free to call Marie Lufkin at 236-6008. Boys’ Night Out February Session of 2012

The CONNECTIONS program invites BOYS in Knox County and Lincolnville in grades 3, 4, and 5 and their dads, step-dads, uncles, grandfathers, or other significant males in their lives to attend three sessions for FOOD, FACTS and FUN.

Location: Penobscot Bay “Y”, 116 Union St., Rockport Thursdays: February 2, 9, 16, 2012

The focus of the program is to have FUN and provide information about issues such as not using tobacco or other substances, anti-bullying, increased physical activity, promote good nutrition, and bonding between parent and child. Each evening starts with a “Getting to Know You” activity, followed by a light healthy meal and a short discussion on making healthy choices. The remainder of the evening is spent playing games and activities that everyone can participate in equally.
