TAMIL NADU

1. The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco), Kumaraguru College of Technology, Rotary Coimbatore Galaxy, and Indian Association of Energy Management Professionals, Coimbatore chapter, have launched the Energy Ambassadors - 2019 programme.

2. Well-known documentary film-maker R.V. Ramani received the Bala Kailasam Memorial Award 2019 for his film Oh that’s Bhanu, on 95-year-old dancer Bhanumathi Rao, at the Tagore Film Centre in Chennai .

The film explores themes of memory and time via Bhanumathi, who is suffering from memory loss herself. Oh That’s Bhanu is a film that looks into the journey of Bhanumathi as a dancer and a theatre actor through the eyes of her daughters and Ms. Bhanumathi herself.

3. After getting CRZ clearance for the Adyar river eco-

restoration project a month ago, the Water Resources Department has started work on desilting a portion of the Adyar river from the Maraimalai Nagar Bridge to the estuary.

4. IIT Madras develops ambient air purifier for outdoors. ‘Cyclofine’ has a four-stage filtering system, air quality monitoring sensor.

5. The machine sucks in ambient air at a rate of 750 cubic metre per hour, filters it and sends out cleaner air.

Called the ‘Cyclofine’, it has been developed by IIT-M’s Department of Civil Engineering and EnviTran, a student start-up at the IIT-M Research Park, and removes 60% of PM10 (particulate matter of 10 microns and less).

With additional filtration, it removes 80% of PM2.5 (particulate matter of 2.5 microns and less) and 100% of PM10 from the air we breathe.

6. Three child-friendly All-Women Police Stations (AWPS) will be inaugurated in Tiruvallur district on Monday.

The first child-friendly police station in Tiruvallur will be inaugurated by Maheshwari Ravikumar, Tiruvallur Collector and P. Aravindan, Superintendent of Police, Tiruvallur on Monday morning.

There are five AWPS in the Tiruvallur district and in the first phase three police stations - Tiruvallur, Tirutani and Uthukottai - will have the child-friendly spaces. This is done jointly by the district police and International Justice Mission (IJM).

7. The Chennai Corporation has started selling manure at malls and shopping complexes. The civic body will also supply manure on the doorstep of residents who place orders through WhatsApp.

1. Gotabaya wins in presidential poll. Gotabaya Rajapaksa, opposition candidate in Sri Lanka’s presidential contest, on Sunday emerged winner securing 52.25 % of the mandate, and marking the return of the Rajapaksa family to power.

Mr. Rajapaksa beat the incumbent government’s candidate Sajith Premadasa — who got nearly 42 % of the vote share. Mr. Rajapaksa will be sworn in as Sri Lanka’s 7th executive president on Monday in the historic city of Anuradhapura, his Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP or People’s Party) said.
