Nearly 70 years ago, on November 1, 1936, World-Wide Communion Day was born. In the winter of 1935, a group of ministers met to study the spiritual needs and possibilities of the church during the dark days of the Great Depression. In the Lord's Supperthey saw a great opportunity to unite Christians in dedication to Christ.

In 1937, the date of World-Wide Communion Sunday was changed to the first Sunday in October, where it has remained.

On World Communion Sunday, Christians around the world unite in Christ through the Church Universal, responding to Christ's invitation,

'This do in remembrance of me.'

World Communion Sunday is also Peacemaking Offering Sunday for the PCUSA. This Special Offering brings Christ’s Peace to a suffering world through local mission and global mission to support free medical clinics for the needy, minority education, and ministries to care for victims of domestic violence, such as our own RC Victim’s Assistance where 25% of our offering will be given.

Please use the Peacemaking Offering Envelope in the pews on Oct. 6th for our Dedication of the Peacemaking Offering.

October 6th

Women’s Book Club for OctoberSunday, October 27th at 6 p.m.In the Sanctuary ParlorLisa Bare, Discussion Leader

Our next book will be A Girl Named Zippy by Haven Kimmel. Sign up for your loaner book at the Mission Boardand join in an evening of informal discussion. The book: When Haven Kimmel was born in 1965,Mooreland, Indiana, was a sleepy little hamlet of three hundred people. Nicknamed "Zippy" for the way she wouldbolt around the house, this small girl was possessed of big eyes and even bigger ears. In this witty and lovingly told memoir, Kimmel takes readers back to a time when small-town America was caught in the amber of the innocent postwar period–people helped their neighbors, went to church on Sunday, and kept barnyard animals in their backyards. Laced with fine storytelling, sharp wit, dead-on observations, and moments of sheer joy, Haven Kimmel's straight-shooting portrait of her childhood gives us a heroine who is wonderfully sweet and sly as she navigates the quirky adult world that surrounds Zippy. Please bring a pitch-in snack, perhaps something you enjoyed eating as a child. And, Lisa requests that everyone (if possible) bring a picture of yourself when you were little (baby to 6th grade), BUT don’t show your photo to anyone before hand—for a friendly little Guess Who Competition! We Give Thanks for the Baptism of

Offering a Meal and a Space for Families

to gather in times of sorrow is an act of love our congregation’s Bereavement Meal Ministry

believes is essential. Every few years we need to restructure this ministry so that it continues to be a gift of compass- sion without becoming burdensome for a few. This autumn, a new format involves more volunteers in serving on a rotating basis.

We give thanks to those who will share these responsibilities!

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

Adult Sunday School ClassGood Neighbor Fund

—a local mission for our neighborhood & congregation—

Recently, we were asked if there was a way to give tothose in our neighborhood in need of help at difficult timesin their lives. Yes, our church, through the Adult Sunday School Class, gives a weekly offering specifically to help familieswithin our church and within our neighborhood.

During the last six and one-half years, members have contributed $8300 to local needs that have helped families who live within a three-block radius of the church, as well as those active within our church family, with medical expenses, medicines, children’s school supplies, transportation needs, utilities and rent. Little is said about the good work that comes through this generosity since the Adult Class gives this offering confidentially. Yet, that has confined the opportunity for others to give locally.

So, for those not part of the Adult Class who desire to give to this Good Neighbor Fund, please know that there is a way to give towards this local mission. Simply label your check or monetary gift in an envelope marked “Adult Class.” Our Financial Secretary will record this designated gift for its specific use in helping our neighbors.

Then Jesus asked, “Which one of these three people was a real neighbor to the man who was beaten up by robbers?” The teacher answered, “The one who treated him kindly.” Jesus said, “Go and do the same!” Luke 10:37
