WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS

Today the Holy Father has asked all Catholic to intercede for vo-cations. Will you make a special effort to ask the Lord for more vocations to the priesthood and religious life?

• Pray for the priests who have ministered to you throughout your life, both living and dead.

• Keep our parish Oblate priests and brother in prayer throughout the week.

• Encourage your children or grandchildren to consider a vo-cation as a priest or religious brother or sister.

• Pray a rosary for more young men and women in our dio-cese to respond to God’s call.

Prayer for vocations in the context of today - an extract from the homily of Pope Francis on Palm Sunday/World Youth Day, April 5, 2020:

“Dear friends, look at the real heroes who come to light in these days: they are not famous, rich and successful people; rather, they are those who are giving themselves in order to serve others. Feel called yourselves to put your lives on the line. Do not be afraid to devote your life to God and to others; it pays! For life is a gift we receive only when we give ourselves away, and our deepest joy comes from saying yes to love, without ifs and buts. To truly say yes to love, without ifs and buts. As Jesus did for us.”

Let’s make the Pope’s invitation a prayer:

Lord Jesus, who gave your life for us,in infinite love, without “ifs” and “buts,”touch the hearts of many young people,

in the same way that you touched the heart of Peter, Andrew, James, John,of Mary Magdalene, of Eugene de Mazenod, of Joseph Gerard, of Joseph Cebu-

la, of the young Oblate martyrs of Spain, of the young Oblate martyrs of Laos.

Through the sorrow, the loneliness, the sufferings and the deaths of many people in our world today,

show to young people the only thing that is important and lasting:not fame, nor material goods, nor success, but giving of themselves to serve others.

May they hear the call to risk their lives without fear for the welfare of others

as Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate.Allow them to discover that it is in giving that they receive, and that their

deepest joy is to respond unconditionally in love as you did for us.You who rose from the dead for our salvationand live with the Father and the Holy Spirit

now and forever. Amen. Mary Immaculate, model and guardian of our consecrated life, pray for us.

It was back in high school, which for some of us was way, way back, that I first learned about paradigms. A paradigm is a belief structure within which you think and act. A paradigm shift changes your belief structure and your perspective so you see things differently and creatively. To be truly creative, you have to think outside the box, even eliminate the box altogether. At St. Patrick we wanted to think and do and reach way outside the box. In this case, beyond the walls of the Church. Remember the iron fence?

Recently we’ve had conversations about how nice it would be to serve our guests at De Mazenod Door something different than the norm, like a nice lunch of maybe chicken ‘n chips. We had been offered a donation of chicken, but it went awry and we didn’t end up getting it, so we reached out to a friend who had recently called us to see how he could help. In past, Dave Rogerson, Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, Council 1454 at St. Eugene’s Parish, has been ever supportive, ensuring we had hams or tur-keys at Easter or Christmas, but with Covid-19 this Easter was much more subdued. After a conversation with him, just like that, it was a done deal. Dave would purchase and donate the chicken, and make cutlets for next Monday in their commercial kitchen on Queenston Rd. Thank you Dave for always supporting us!

That very same day, Kate, from Rebel’s Rock Irish Pub at 537 King St. E., also reached out to ask the same question. What could she do to help? Offering once again to fry up French fries whenever we wanted some. You’ll remember Kate. It was her and her husband Troy who stepped in at the last moment to ensure all was not lost and we had fresh cut French fries to go with our fish for the Good Friday luncheon at the Door and how well it was received. Kate also offered storage space for refrigerated and dry goods. On Tuesday when we picked up our monthly allotment from Hamilton Food Share, there were 6 cases of chicken breasts included! Was someone listening to our very thoughts and providing divine providence in making it all come together? One might think so! Thank you Jesus for always hearing our prayers, sometimes the ones we pray out loud and sometimes the ones we pray silently.

We talk often about how we are ever reaching ‘beyond the walls’ at St. Patrick, and it is beyond our walls that those in our community, be it parishioners, donors, sponsors or neighbours have wanted to become involved. Whether they’re involved with our youth ministry or with De Mazenod Door Outreach or our new hygiene/resting station within the church, they’ve made a point of saying ‘hey, I want to help you, what can I do’ and they’ve been welcomed with arms stretched wide open. They have become our friends, and our companions, because we all have, or should have the same mission, to love others as Christ loves us and we can’t do that by sitting still week after week. We have to bust out beyond those walls and grasp every single soul with their hand out in want, or stuck out offering to help, and hold onto it just as tight as we can. A church is a building used for worship, but there is so much more to ‘church’ out beyond the walls.

Catholic Education Week 2020 begins this Sunday, May 3, 2020. This is a week specially set aside to celebrate our Catholic schools and why the triple connection of home, school and parish is an important and integral part of Catholic education. This triad emphasizes for our children, the reality of our wider Catholic community that collaborates on their faith formation and education.

This year’s Catholic Education Week theme is, “Igniting Hope.” The theme for CEW 2020 was inspired by three sources:

• The recent Papal Exhortation, Christus Vivit, by Pope Francis following the 2018 Synod of Bishops on Young People, the Faith and Vocational Discernment

• The recent Ontario Bishops’ pastoral letter, Renewing the Promise (2018)• The Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations by the Institute for Catholic Edu-

cation (2011)

The CEW biblical quote is, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Romans 15:13

Our Catholic schools are, by definition, faith-based schools, firmly birthed in the gospel val-ues of Jesus Christ. This week we continue to celebrate a school system, which celebrates and defines itself on faith and mercy and embraces the message of salvation for all peoples preached by Jesus.

On Friday, May 8, 2020, Bishop Douglas Crosby, OMI will celebrate Mass in our church at 11:00 AM, which will be livestreamed on our Facebook Page and the website.

DONATIONS TO ST. PATRICK CHURCH AND DE MAZENOD DOOR OUTREACH

It seems like everyone is asking for your money these days, and for good reason. This Covid-19 pandemic has flipped the lives of everyone and everything upside down and inside out. ZOOM TRIVIA FOR ST. PATRICK CHURCHOver the past weeks we have been experiencing a brand new reality and finding ways to make the best of our new normal. We are trying to find ways to connect with friends and family and the outside world to keep a sense of norm and calm in our lives. During the pandemic I, like everyone, am missing the parts of our lives that we took for granted: a hug, gathering at Church or going out with friends and being with family.

One of my favourite past-times is going to trivia with friends. In the midst of trying to find ways to do ‘something fun’ that took into account social distancing, I was talking to my sister about hosting an online trivia back in March as a fundraiser for Food4Kids (https://www.food4kidshamilton.ca/) which is a phenomenal organi-zation that ensures our children are fed over the weekend through our great city. As with every organization during the pandemic, they have had to shift their focus and mandate to find ways to feed the children throughout the week and since their original delivery of bags of food to households wasn’t feasible during the pandemic they started to look to gift cards so out of a desire to raise money for Food4Kids I ran an online trivia through Zoom that I posted on Facebook and within 24 hours we had raised $2,040 to support the purchasing of grocery gift cards.

With the first round of trivia being a huge success and greatly surpassing the original goal of $500, I thought it would be good a second round of trivia and this time for St. Patrick’s Church & The DeMazenod Door. We all know of the amazing work that is done daily by an army of amazing people at both the Church and the DeMazenod Door but without the pews filled with people the funding needed to keep our church and the programs running is becoming increasingly difficult to find. Once again I turned to my friends, colleagues and family and asked if people would make a $5 donation to partici-pate in 4 rounds of trivia on Sunday, April 26th with the winner getting custom baked sugar cookies. I am blessed to be surrounded by incredible people who believe in the incredible work of St. Patrick’s and The De Ma-zenod Door and who are able to donate during these trying times. The goal was to raise $1000 that would be split be-tween the Church the DeMazenod Door. The trivia night kicked off with a video of Father Jarek thanking the participants and me decked out in my trivia host wig (always have to find a way to have some fun these days!). The event was a huge success with families crowded around their computers to participate in 3 rounds of trivia and a Name That Tune round. We had lots of smiles, tons of fun and couldn’t have asked for a better turn out or result! By the end of the trivia we had raised $2,465!!!

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed and played alongside in our Zoom trivia. Your generosity and kindness is appreciated by all!

SIGNS OF HOPE, LIVING THE PASCHAL MYSTERY - DYINGS AND RISINGSThese days are filled with multiple moments and events of dyings and risings; the Paschal Mystery has been so evident in our lives during this month of April. Let us continue to support each other in prayer, kindness, patience and hope.

• Our celebration of the Passion, Death, Resurrection of our Lord in such a different way.• The dying of the winter snows and cold weather, and the rising, breaking into new life of the signs of spring in God’s creation. • The pathway of journeying through this coronavirus, not knowing, being unsure of symptoms, feeling hopeless during some of the days of April when cases and deaths were on the extreme increase, when PPE materials were in short supply, to a gradual increase of a time of hope: more testing available; moving towards greater plan of testing, tracing, isolating, cases and deaths on the decline. • Dying to our preferred lifestyle for a time; rising to the realization that our sacrifice is helping preserve the health of the public, the common good of all. • Living the Paschal Mystery in the reality of our lives each day, dying and rising in so many ways, reverencing this Easter Season through electronic presence, but never dying to the real presence of Jesus through our faith, our love of God, and the ongoing celebration of the Death and Resurrection of His Son.....—including thanking God for our gift of life . . . April 22, St. Patrick Church celebrated the Easter Cathedral High School Mass online, and because it was such a special day, several of the teachers from Cathedral pitched in and purchased an additional 10 large Domino’s pizzas, adding to the 12 piping hot pizzas we receive every single Tuesday from our local Domino’s franchisee on Main St. E. With ever growing numbers, 12 large pizzas no longer carry us very far, leaving many waiting in line for a mouth watering slice, with a sandwich instead. Thank you Cathedral High School staff for always being so considerate and going the extra mile! Having heard about this, one of our parishioners, who is also an amazing supporter of De Ma-zenod Door Outreach, decided that rather than sponsor a barbeque, they would instead follow suit and donate money for us to be able to purchase an extra 15 pizzas on another Pizza Tuesday! If you can just imagine for a moment what it’s like to very rarely ever afford something so simple and ordinary as a slice of pizza, you can also imagine how it feels to be one of those not fortunate enough to get a slice on a Tuesday when you’re the one near or at the end of the line. We love this idea! We’re not just affording our guests a great treat, but also supporting a local Canadian business, who now more than ever needs that support!

This past Tuesday was our scheduled once monthly pick up at Hamilton Food Share. We were amazed and totally unprepared for the six skids of food (fresh and frozen) that we received, but knew we could call on our friends to help with storage. We are now storing both surplus and daily use items in need of freezer space at LiUNA! and storing non-perishable refrigerated as well as dry goods at Rebel’s Rock Restaurant. This truly has become a joint venture with so many businesses (both small and large) taking on the challenge with open arms and helping their commu-nity during a time of crisis.

As you or most of you are aware, we have moved out of the old St. Patrick School and into the Pastoral Centre. Thismeant that anything we had stored there had to be removed. More than a year ago when the school closed and moved to the old St. Brigid School, we stretched out a bit and were using a lot more than just the space at the Door, but like with any-thing, all good things must come to an end and we needed to find room for everything and reached out to our friends at LiUNA! and Rebel’s Rock. It has been a very busy couple of weeks, but we’re never too busy to say a huge Thank You to those who support us in so many different ways.

MOST WANTED ITEM THIS WEEK: Ziplock Sandwhich Bags

Thank you all who continue to give generously to this program.
