Coming in 2017… Now that 2017 is in full swing and 2016 is firmly behind us, what have we learned about what the rest of the year has in store? From new diesel vehicle models, settlements and lawsuits, as well as a change in administration and focus in the United States, 2017 could be an exciting year in the diesel industry.

18 26 Midwest Fuel Nikola Unveils Its Ground-Breaking Class 8 TruckLike many of its contemporaries,

Midwest Fuel Injection has its origins in the Oldsmobile 5.7L diesel engine. But the company founder, Geret Seidel, can also trace his diesel roots back to Robert Bosch Corporation in Stuttgart, Germany.

At the beginning of December, Nikola publicly unveiled its new Nikola One truck releasing more details of the product and how it will be brought to market. The truck showcased features US Express, one of the leading trucking companies.

Case: 2008 Ford 6.4L Fuel in the Oil

December 22

We have a 2008 Ford 6.4L F550 Service Body Truck in for fuel in the oil. We’ve read about this issue, but have not yet experienced it. Assuming it was an injector leaking, we’ve pulled the 8 injectors and had our component shop test them. The test showed all injectors were good with no leakage. Prior to pulling the injectors we added dye to the fuel filter and found dye everywhere under both valve covers. We did not do much of any observation with IDS prior to pulling the injectors, so we are installing the re-sealed injectors now and will run the engine and check short term fuel trims. This is the 3rd engine in the truck. There are only 14000 miles on this Ford engine that was replaced under warranty by a dealer. The engine idles a lot. Customer noted that the truck shut down while driving last week and would not re-start, but had to be hauled in. Customer also noted the engine had not regen’d in awhile which the driver thought was odd. Once back to the customer’s shop, they noted the oil level. They drained the oil and installed new oil and a filter and the truck started. They ran the truck approx.. 30 miles and the oil level went up a ¼ to ½’ on the dipstick. Then the truck was brought to us. Being the injectors are all good, is it possible we have a pump leaking? Or an issue with fuel being injected in excessive amounts to burn out the emission system?Any thoughts would be appreciated.

December 22

After installing the injectors I would perform a cold compression check, pending results, warm up to op temp then check SFTs and see if any cylinders are out of spec. Also a hot compression check. If everything checks out, it would not surprise me if the pump seal is leaking. I have not personally experienced it with a direct Ford reman, but have heard it can be common.

December 22

He is right, however how many engine hrs are on the vehicle also noting as you said that the truck has had 3 engines what is the total hrs? Cats DOC and DPF could be partly clogged or mostly. What does the DPF pressure look like under load, when was the last regen completed, etc? Also, yes it is possible for the high pressure pump to be leaking. Have seen it before but has to be removed and test benched to see usually.

December 27

We have the 6.4L engine back up and running. We’ve checked cold and warm compression, with IDS, all ok. Short term fuel trims show 8 or less. One cylinder (#2) was at 8. We’ve noticed this engine starts quite hard since installing the injectors. We’ve ran the engine with the valve covers off with the dye in the fuel and cannot pin point any fuel leaks. Any more thoughts would be appreciated.

December 27

The IDS Relative Compression check is highly unreliable on the 6.4. I usually just use it to pin point a completely dead cylinder. A manual compression test or leakdown is best. Keep in mind these engines can compensate for an almost completely dead cylinder with just a slight shimmy @ idle. If you dyed the fuel and see nothing from the rails, tubes, seats, or injector bodies, the next step could be getting to the HPFP and checking out the seals via a bench test as Matt stated earlier.

December 27

The question is how much fuel are you getting in the oil these engines use post injection for the regen system so it is normal to get some fuel dilution in the oil if this truck idles a lot and is trying to do a regen but is unable to complete it could be sensing fuel into the cylinders and since it is done on the exhaust stroke it is bypassing the rings and mixing with the oil.

Case: 2008 Ford 6.4L Fuel in the Oil (continued)

December 27

I guess I may have missed the post on bench testing the HPFP.

We just completed a compression test. All cylinders showed 380 PSI except cylinder #2 that was at 320 PSI.

December 27

We just repaired one with the same symptoms. The customer complaint – engine miss fire. Checked the oil level and it was a couple of gallons over full, diesel in oil. Ford test – drain crank case and don’t reinstall oil plug and let sit overnight. Next morning cycle key several times to cycle the supply pump and look for fuel leaking out of drain pan, no leaks. Refilled the crank case and pulled the valve covers. With the oil level at the normal level the engine miss fire/shimmy went away. With the valve covers off we ran the High Pressure Fuel System Test, we found no leaks. Replaced the high pressure pump.

our ADS Officers and Board of Directors recently met for our winter meeting in Las Vegas prior to the start of Heavy Duty Aftermarket Week (HDAW). On the first day of meetings,

the officers along with ADS staff, held our 2017 Convention Planning meeting. The following day the full board and ADS staff held our semi-annual board meeting. The purpose of these meetings is to review, discuss and develop our plans of action for the upcoming year.

At our convention planning meeting we went over all the survey results and comments from the last convention.

Direction from our attending members was very clear this year. The first thing was to go back to a three day tradeshow! We had a lot of input from a good number of our members that attend and displayed at the convention. We need to go back to having the tradeshow three days and that is what we are going to do for 2017!

The next item was what type of seminars do our members like best? Again it was loud and clear our members want more technical information and more panel discussions. So to meet that need, our plan for this year’s convention is to start with a full-day class on the subject of Duramax engines. This class will be held during the day on Tuesday, August 8th, with the Get-Acquainted Reception that night. This class will be FREE to all members with a full paid convention registration. So please try to take advantage of this by attending yourself or maybe bring one of your drive-in service technicians to the Convention with you this year. We will also be having technical presentations by Bosch and an on-engine presentation on the latest Power Stroke engine along with other presentations (yet to be determined). We will have a technical presentation on

DPF systems that will go into all areas of discussion about the function, trouble shooting, and repair of these systems.

We will again have private session meetings with the major turbocharger manufacturers Cummins Turbo Technology, Borg Warner and Garrett. This year your Turbocharger Committee will also have a booth at the Convention and will display turbocharger failures as well as how to diagnose common failures.

Our Latin American Regional Meeting and Exhibits will be held in Cancun, Mexico this year from May 14-18, 2017. Last year’s Latin American meeting was held in Medellin, Colombia and set a record for attendance and exhibits and we hope to surpass that number this year. This event is open to all members to attend and while the seminars are in Spanish, attendees are from a variety of Spanish speaking countries.

This year’s ADS International Convention & Tradeshow will be held August 8-11, 2017, returning to the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada a favorite location for ADS members. Our 2018 ADS International Convention & Tradeshow will be held at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego California. This has always been a great place for our convention and we are excited to be going back to San Diego.

As you have read here, we are listening to our members and making changes that are important to you. Once again, a reminder

From the Executive Director

David FehlingADS Executive Director

s you all know, our Association has now been in existence and operation for over 60 years, most of those years have been filled with pride, achievements,

successes, accomplishments and many milestones.

Over the past couple of years, the Association has been challenged with a variety of changing situations within our industry and by some of our association members. Our Board has accepted those challenges as something we can learn from and overcome. Some of these challenges will require us to have perseverance, determination and resiliency. We want to support all ADS members through these times to achieve and succeed into the future.

I am devoted to our association, I care deeply about the impact that the industry is having on the Association and what it means for all of us, and I am committed to help it thrive, as I have been in the past, present and into the future! While I am proud of our achievements as mentioned previously, thanks to our Members, Board and Executive Committee volunteers, it will take even more effort and commitment and ALL of your support to take us into the future. The Association needs a stable source of funding that supports our operations and future growth. Over the past 24 years that I have been with ADS we have always acted with fiscal integrity and balanced budgets. Circumstances over the last couple of years which have translated into a lack of support for the Association as well as a deficiency of funding is forcing us to review the future of ADS.

At the recent Board Meeting the Board was asked to look at our strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and barriers while focusing on

what is important to support the Association of Diesel Specialists!

As we build on these opportunities, we will continue its more than 60 year successful history, it will take continuous creativity, the dedication, financial support and commitment of all, and I am pleased to say that the Officers, Board Members and Staff are up to the challenge for the continued long term benefits offered to ALL members and for our Association.

I want to thank all of our ADS Members in advance for your membership and participation in our various member benefits. I encourage you to please use the feedback form on the ADS web page to let us know what is important to YOU as an ADS Member.

Forerunners Forum

Looking Forward to 2017

fter endless rounds of small talk at family gatherings and eating your weight at holiday meals and parties, it is finally time to get back to work

and start planning for 2017! With steady growth in diesels sales, affordable diesel fuel at the pump, and consumer confidence reaching its highest point since 2008, there are plenty of encouraging signs that this year will be as busy as ever. To be prepared, here are a few suggestions to stay ahead of the curve.

Improve on your mistakes of 2016 - Take some time to sit down and review 2016 closely. What did your company do well? What went wrong and how can you fix that in 2017? For instance, if last summer was particularly slow, figure out the steps you can take now to prevent or prepare for slower months ahead.

Set lofty goals and write them down on paper - Whether you are developing monthly, quarterly, or yearly goals, write them down and keep them visible. Having attainable landmarks clearly established can help you stay focused and motivated. Then develop step-by-step plans on how to achieve them. It isn’t enough to cross your fingers and hope that growth and success falls in your lap. A little proactivity never hurts.

Communicate with your team - You can’t do it all by yourself, so remember to keep your team in the loop. Scheduling frequent meetings regarding current and future projects with your staff and allowing them to voice their input will result in a more motivated workforce. Not only will they take more pride in their work, but it will also encourage them to prove that your

confidence in them is warranted. Their ambition and willingness to take on bigger roles might help energize you on a daily basis too.

Get some face time with your customers – While advancements in emails and social media have been instrumental in the world of communication, important information can still fall through the cracks. Tone of voice, emotion, and sarcasm are just a few of the things that are not properly conveyed through these platforms. Meeting with your customers or vendors in person not only helps build and strengthen your relationships with them, but it also allows you to brainstorm in an uninterrupted environment. Your collaboration is sure to increase over the course of the year even after one in-person meeting.

These are just a few of the things that you can do to stay on track for a successful 2017. There are many fresh ideas out there, so it is important to find a balance between old and new methods. It is easy to stick with what works because that is what has gotten you here, but consider adding something new to the company. You may see that these productivity hacks could be the catalyst you need for continued growth this upcoming year!

Light Duty Vehicles

At the beginning of January, Allen Schaffer with the Diesel Technology Forum said in a press release, “Much has been said and predicted about the viability of diesel in passenger cars, trucks and SUVs in the U.S. in the wake of the ‘dieselgate’ emissions scandal. Diesel sales started 2016 at their lowest point - 0.43 percent of all vehicle sales in January, according to Hybrid Cars.com data – and some analysts issued dire projections about diesel’s future here.

“However, by the end of 2016 the diesel ‘take rate’ almost doubled to 0.81 percent in December. Cumulatively, 115,337 diesels were sold in the U.S. in 2016, and this does not include many of the domestic heavy-duty diesel pickup truck sales where diesel has over 10 percent of the market share.

“Even with the loss of 13 VW Group of America vehicles from the U.S. market, as well as delays in government product certifications for other manufacturers, 2016 diesel sales have regained about 20 percent of VW’s previous diesel market share.

“It is to be expected that with fewer choices and lower fuel prices, the sales of fuel-efficient clean diesels might decline, but what we’re seeing is that consumers have not lost confidence in diesel.

“SUVs and light trucks largely carried the U.S. diesel market in 2016 in addition to smaller numbers of luxury cars and SUVs diesel options.

“In the last 18 months, our public opinion research has continued to reinforce the idea that Americans’ continue to keep an open mind about potential clean diesel vehicle purchases - even in

the wake of the recent emissions scandal. The 2016 sales trends validate those perceptions.

“On the eve of the 2017 North American International Auto Show, we remain optimistic about the momentum for diesels in the coming years. In 2017, we anticipate new product launches to boost the market, ranging from the Chevrolet’s Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel, Cruze Hatchback Clean Turbo Diesel and Equinox Clean Turbo Diesel, to the highly-anticipated Mazda SKYACTIV-D CX-5 diesel SUV.

“These are in addition to other automakers who have made recent moves to expand the U.S. diesel market like GMC, Mercedes, Ford, Ram, Jeep, Land Rover, Jaguar and Nissan.

“With tighter fuel efficiency standards coming into play in the U.S. along with growing demand for greener choices, we have no doubt that the new and established diesels will play a major role in the expanding growth of clean diesel technology in the domestic market.

“The new generation of clean diesel passenger vehicles with proven real world fuel efficiency offer about 30 percent better fuel efficiency than comparable gasoline vehicles. These vehicles are clean with low CO2 emissions, they provide great performance, and they are renewable fuel ready. Because of all this, we are extremely optimistic about the future of diesel passenger vehicles in the U.S.”

Just a few days later at the Detroit Auto Show, Ford and GM also announced the addition of new diesels in their light duty vehicles. The new 2018 Ford F-150 will feature a 3.0L diesel option, the first time ever offered in this product line and the new 2018 GMC Terrain will have a 1.6L turbo-diesel engine option. These new additions are aimed to take advantage of the popularity of the Ford F series and the growing market share of SUVs.

In addition of these two announced at the auto show, Chevy also has the Cruze diesel in both sedan and hatchback for this year and, Mazda will have the CX-5, as well as the options already in the market. The forecast for diesel vehicle sales is looking up.

Settlements & Lawsuits

It looks like the VW incident in the US may be drawing to a close. With the final settlements reached and a course of action now planned, maybe this low point in the light duty diesel story can now be put in the past. Now the job of reassuring consumers is in the forefront. Even with the buybacks of VW cars in the US starting the news stories are still running as the investigations go higher up the chain of command and other car companies are being investigated around the world.

Luckily consumer confidence in diesel vehicles is still high. According to Mr. Schaffer, “In the last 18 months, our public opinion research has reinforced the idea that Americans’ continue to keep an open mind to consider diesel options even in the wake of the VW emissions crisis. The 2016 diesel sales trends validate those consumer perceptions, and these announcements today reinforce leading manufacturer commitments to the diesel powertrain.

“Diesels continue to be popular in the light-duty pickup truck market and SUV market and automakers are continuing to add new options in this sector, because diesel engines offer a no-compromise option to achieve proven higher fuel

“With tighter fuel efficiency standards coming into play in

the U.S. along with growing demand for greener choices, we have no doubt that the new and

established diesels will play a major role in the expanding

growth of clean diesel technology in the domestic market.”

economy and lower CO2 emissions without sacrifice to performance or vehicle utility. Beyond the lower CO2 emissions, superb performance and efficiency, an added feature is the ability to use blends of low-carbon renewable high-quality biodiesel fuels now available in a growing number of locations. Because of all this, we are extremely optimistic about the future of diesel vehicles in the U.S.”

Other Factors

There are also other factors coming into play creating changes in the industry. According to a recent presentation by Mike Rayne at APRA, the industry itself is becoming more consolidated, new distribution models are coming into play, the aftermarket is growing, and new and emerging markets are becoming larger shares of the industry.

Dieter Becker, Global Chair of Automotive for KPMG, stated in the Global Automotive Executive Survey 2017,

“… there are tremendous challenges ahead in terms of geopolitical turmoil and regional shifts. Recent political and economic disruptions have shown that we cannot take for granted that the world map will look the same even in just a few years’ time. Everything seems to be about speed in today’s world: but how about slowing down, taking time to breath, re-thinking business models, discovering new core competencies that enable tapping into spheres which are way beyond the home turf, to think of efficient use of resources, to question measuring market sales in

units vs. measuring overall customer profitability, and eventually deciding for a future roadmap that enables capturing of the opportunities the ‘next’ dimension is bringing with it.”

Included in that same report Automotive Executives have contradictory feelings over the future of diesel. “More than every second executive believes that diesel will be the first traditional powertrain technology to vanish from manufacturers’ portfolios. This is quite alarming for several manufacturers and regions considering their expected diesel penetration rates for 2023, such as Indian manufacturers with an overall diesel share of more than 60%.

“From a pure mindset perspective, there are certainly hard times to come. But diesel is not easy to erase from the market due to typical applications such as long distance heavy truck engines. Diesel will still be a viable option in many application scenarios and markets bearing in mind long distances, rural areas and fewer emerging countries. Besides, for applications like medium and heavy trucks, there might not be any short-term alternative.”

So ask yourself, how will this affect my business and am I ready to act on these global changes locally? Now is the time to think of the effects of the policies and changes made by governments and large corporations in order to position your business to succeed in 2017.

Yup! The misfire from my experience comes from a pre-ignition from the crankcase vapor/fuel/oil mixture entering the intake system due to crankcase over full. I believe this is when the truck should throw a code for crank case overfull when the MAF reading is off due to the un-metered fuel entering engine through the CCV tube, and doing most damage to #2(think intake design flaw).

ike many of its contemporaries, Midwest Fuel Injection has its origins in the Oldsmobile 5.7L diesel engine. But the company

founder, Geret Seidel, can also trace his diesel roots back to Robert Bosch Corporation in Stuttgart, Germany. Geret started working for Bosch in Germany and was then moved to Chicago to take on the role of National Service Manager for the Bosch diesel team. Sensing a need to better service the diesel market in the Chicagoland area, Geret and his son, Ben Seidel, first opened their doors in 1981 to service the Stanadyne 5.7L pump, but the Bosch brand made an indelible mark.

In 1984, Midwest Fuel Injection became a member of ADS. “ADS was and continues to be critically important in too many aspects of our business to count,” said Ben Seidel. “The networking and exchange of ideas with members is what helps you grow both personally and professionally,” Paul Thoms added. “All of the members of ADS have contributed to our success in one way or another. We continually learn from and rely on each other,” said Thoms.

In 1985, a combination of low gas prices and perpetual Oldsmobile performance issues confirmed for Geret and Ben the need to diversify. They began to place a high priority on product training with two goals in mind, provide customers with a complete line of high quality diesel products and a viable alternative to the OE. High quality and product diversification, along with keeping abreast of the latest diesel fuel injection technologies have become hallmarks of Midwest Fuel Injection and have fueled their growth from the beginning.

Geret Seidel continued to lead the company through 2005 at which time Ben Seidel became President. Soon after, the company relocated to their current headquarters in Bolingbrook, IL. From their start in Orland Park, Ben’s focus remained very much aligned with Geret’s with one difference, Ben’s focus on expansion. Standardizing proven remanufacturing processes and bringing best practices

and economies of scale to future locations throughout the United States was a major focus for Ben Seidel. Midwest Fuel Injection continues to be committed to the highest customer service. “We’ll do anything to get the product to the customer when they need it.” said Service Manager Kevin Schmidt.

Specifically during Ben Seidel’s tenure as President/CEO;

• In 2005 Action Truck Parts was formed in partnership with Acme Truck Brake, allowing the company to expand its footprint into Heavy Duty and class 8 vehicles.

• Also in 2005 Diesel Service Center was formed to service the diesel drive-in business and expand the company’s diesel expertise.

In a year when dealers in the U.S. and Canada face a large downturn in truck sales, Mexico is a world apart. As of November the market for Class 4-8 vehicles was up 18.5%, and Daimler Trucks NA accounted for 36% of it – up 7.8% over last year. But Stefan Kurschner, president and CEO of Daimler Vehiculos Comerciales Mexico, says there’s room for more. The year-to-date sales of 30,190 Class 4-8 trucks – 26,890 of which were Class 8 models – is still a fraction of what the country should require, he said, suggesting the market could handle double those volumes. The average age for a truck in Mexico is also 17.8 years; more than 150,000 vehicles on the road today are over 20 years old. There are economic challenges, though. Mexico’s GDP will grow by just over 2% this year. And the peso continues to struggle in the face of low oil prices.

Daimler is offsetting the currency challenge by setting prices in pesos, unlike other manufacturers in the market, and guaranteeing the prices for six months at a time. Prices had been set in U.S. dollars until as recently as 2015, leaving dealers to account for shifting exchange rates in quotes and when filing taxes.

But there are other challenges ahead. Mexico is also preparing to move from EPA ‘04 emissions standards to EPA 2013 technology. The draft rules were unveiled only weeks ago, but could take hold as early as 2018. And there is still work to do before that happens. Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel, widely available in Canada and the U.S. where it’s required to enable the use of modern diesel aftertreatment technology, is not available everywhere in Mexico. Local governments also set up their own emission-related rules, Kurschner said. Some larger cities have restricted truck access in a bid to tackle pollution.

A boom in electric vehicles made by companies like Tesla Motors Inc. could erode as much as 10% of global gasoline demand by 2035, according to the oil industry consultant Wood Mackenzie Ltd. While battery-powered cars and trucks today represent less than 1% of total vehicle sales, they are expected to take off after 2025 as governments move to tackle pollution and costs fall, the Houston-based analyst said. By 2035 so-called EVs may remove 1 million to 2 million barrels a day of oil demand from the market - in the range of the production cut OPEC and its allies agreed to in order to end a three-year crude surplus. Nikola reveals class 8 hydrogen-electric truck Wood Mackenzie’s view echoes the International Energy Agency, which last month forecast global gasoline demand has all but peaked because of more efficient cars and the spread of EVs.

The agency expects total oil demand to keep growing for decades, driven by shipping, trucking, aviation and petrochemical industries. Bloomberg New Energy Finance forecasts that EVs will displace about 8 million barrels a day of demand by 2035.

That will rise to 13 million barrels a day by 2040, which amounts of about 14% of estimated crude oil demand in 2016, the London-based researcher said. Electric cars are displacing about 50,000 barrels a day of demand now, Wood Mackenzie said.

On Dec. 2, Athens, Greece, Madrid, Spain, Mexico City and Paris pledged to phase out diesel vehicles by 2025, a move that could further stimulate demand for EVs that have zero tailpipe emissions..

Electric Vehicles May Take a Sizeable Bite from Oil Use

The 2018 F-150 will offer optional diesel power for the first time since the introduction of the model in 1975, as Ford will offer a turbo-diesel V-6 engine and updated versions of the gasoline-powered V-6, turbo V-6, and V-8, Ford announced ahead of the Detroit auto show. In a bid to improve fuel efficiency, Ford will pair a 3.0L Power Stroke diesel with a 10-sp. automatic transmission.

Ford will also offer a new standard 3.3L V-6 engine with direct injection that replaces the 3.5L V-6 that powers the 2017 model. It is expected to offer the same 282 HP and 253 lb.-ft. of torque as the outgoing engine. A second-generation 2.7L EcoBoost engine will replace the 3.5L EcoBoost. It features advanced dual port and direct injection technology, reduced internal friction and improved robustness to offer improved levels of output, efficiency, quality and durability, according to Ford.

The 5.0L V-8 also sees improvements in 2018, as the naturally aspirated engine features significant upgrades for increased power and torque. The trio of gasoline engines will also be paired with the 10-speed automatic transmission. The 2018 F-150 go on sale in the fall.

Tier 4 Final For Marine Two-CycleProgress Rail announced that its EMD 710 Series Model E 23B Tier 4 marine engine has received U.S. EPA Tier 4 final certification, making it the only two-cycle engine of its kind to achieve this distinction for the marine market. The announcement was made at the International Workboat Show in New Orleans, Louisiana. The EMD 710 engine is available in 8-, 12, 16 and 20-cylinder configurations with ratings ranging from 200 to 5000 hp. The EMD 710 Series 12-cylinder marine engine has the same footprint as the previous product, which the company said addressed customers’ strict specifications to not increase the size of the vessel. The system incorporates SCR technology to produce fewer emissions while operating at the highest efficiency, Progress Rail said. The company said it anticipates delivering the first pair of engines to a customer by the end of the year. The certification also provides the company with the opportunity to bid for multiple ferry and tugboat projects, Progress Rail said.

The Cost of Volkswagen’s Diesel Scandal Hits $18B Volkswagen AG has agreed to pay almost $1.6B to settle claims in a Canadian court alleging that VW made “false and misleading” environmental claims related to its diesel-engine emissions in marketing materials. This latest settlement brings the total cost of VW’s global diesel-emissions cheating scandal to over $18B -- and there is almost certainly more to come.

The Canadian government’s Competition Bureau announced that the Canadian units of Volkswagen’s VW and Audi brands had agreed to settle a class action suit by offering to buy back and pay restitution to about 105,000 Canadian owners of vehicles with 2.0L diesel engines. VW’s payments could total as much as 2.1B Canadian dollars ($1.57B). As part of the settlement agreement, which is pending approval by the courts, VW also agreed to pay a fine of CA$15M ($11.2M) to the bureau. The Competition Bureau said that its investigation into models equipped with a 3.0L V6 version of VW’s diesel engine is ongoing. VW is said to be close to a settlement in the US related to those engines, which were fitted to certain VW, Audi, and Porsche models.

So far, VW has set aside about 18B euros ($18.8B) to cover the costs of the diesel-emissions cheating scandal. But much of that is already accounted for. For shareholders and investors, the big questions are where does this end, and will VW be able to afford it?

26 SPRING 2017

t the beginning of December, Nikola publicly unveiled its new Nikola One truck releasing more details of the product and how it

will be brought to market. The truck showcased features US Express, one of the leading trucking companies.

The Nikola One utilizes a fully electric drivetrain powered by high-density lithium batteries that will be supplied with on-the-go energy by a hydrogen fuel cell with a range of 800 - 1,200 miles. Maximum HP is stated to be over 1000 with torque up to 2000 ft.-lbs., which would make the truck the most powerful Class 8 truck on the road with torque comparable to the highest power diesel engines available today. Further, Nikola claims best in class fuel economy achieved with zero emissions.

These are dramatic claims with potential to upset the diesel engine’s dominance in over the road trucking. But there are big hurdles of hydrogen fuel availability, service and parts support and customer reaction to all new technologies to be resolved.

Strategic partnership with RyderNikola’s plan involves vehicle leasing for 72 months with unlimited hydrogen fuel with sales, warranty and scheduled maintenance exclusively provided through Ryder’s distribution system of over 800 service centers in the US. Thompson Machinery, a major Caterpillar distributor and investor in Nikola, will offer support in Tennessee and Mississippi.

The lease plan will have an anticipated monthly payment of $5,000 to $7,000

per month depending on options spec’d which includes unlimited miles, unlimited hydrogen fuel, and all warranty and scheduled maintenance. After 72 months, or one million miles, the user can trade in the vehicle for a new Nikola One at no additional cost. Customers will have the choice of purchasing or leasing vehicles.

National Hydrogen Fueling InfrastructureFor hydrogen fuel availability, Nikola promises 364 US fueling stations with the first operational hydrogen stations coming on-stream in late 2019. Fuel will be produced from renewable sources like solar-powered electrolysis and be transported in cryogenic tanks from Worthington Industries.

Nikola trucks will be fueled with liquid hydrogen with a 100- kilogram capacity using 5,000-psi tank cylinders mounted behind the cab – the tank cylinders will also be supplied by Worthington. Driving range with the 100-kilogram capacity is claimed at 800 to 1200 miles.

Nikola is in the process of developing multiple 100-megawatt solar farms to create hydrogen from electrolysis. Nikola will convert solar energy to hydrogen on-site using only energy and water, making it the only fuel that is zero emission from production to consumption. The liquid hydrogen will be transported to hydrogen stations by a fleet of Nikola One trucks.

ADS believes that the use of clean diesel will improve the sustainability of consumers, businesses and communities by reducing the environmental and societal cost of their activities.

ADS does not condone the use of devices made to intentionally contravene emission controls for use in equipment or vehicles used on a regular basis. ADS believes that intentionally bypassing or altering emission controls in the name of performance enhancement undermines individual and group efforts to promote the use of clean diesel as a viable alternative power plant for the future.
