New version of the Canadian Common CV now available The new Canadian Common CV (CCV) application is now available CCV Data Migration: The majority of data (approximately 90%) has been migrated from the old to the new CCV. You are advised to inspect each section and field of your CV to make sure that your data was properly migrated. Any missing or wrongly formatted data will have to be corrected. Contributions can no longer be attached as a file to the CCV and will have to be entered as structured data. Please allow for some time to capture this information. You will be able to connect to the new CCV using the same username and password as the previous version. However, when you connect to the new CCV for the first time, you will be asked to capture reminder questions and answers before you can access your CV data.

Informing Research Choices: Indicators and Judgment The Council of Canadian Academies has released the final report from its Expert Panel on Informing Research Choices. The report, commissioned by NSERC, looks at how to develop evidence-based research policy and funding decisions.

Nova Scotia Researchers and Businesses Hook Up at the ILO Food Connector Event, Hosted by Centre for Women in Business and Mount Saint Vincent University In an energized event that resembled speed dating, six growing Nova Scotia businesses met with researchers from the Applied Human Nutrition program at Mount Saint Vincent University (The Mount), all vying for the perfect business-research match-up. “Businesses are not always aware of the opportunities they have through universities to test products or strategies – we’d like to change that,” says Gina Funicelli, Director of The Mount’s Industry Liaison Office (ILO). ILO Administrator Tanya Moxley used a stopwatch to time the three-minute pitches as local businesses wooed researchers with their growth and innovation potential. Businesses also promoted current products and services, from Nova Scotia cranberry juice to dietary consultation. Researchers from The Mount, Acadia, SMU, and Holland College also showcased their services, projects and ideas.

"Ethics Rupture: An Invitational Summit about Alternatives to Research-Ethics Review" St. Thomas University and the University of New Brunswick 25-28 October 2012

Many scholars in the social sciences and humanities have noted the inadequacy of the current formal system of research-ethics review to fairly offer ethical consideration in light of their research needs. The formal system of ethics review has placed the social sciences (and some of the humanities research) in a precarious situation. The bio- medical conceptions of research on which the system relies is not up to the task to give discipline-appropriate advice to other fields. The time has come to convene an international summit to find alternative means to underscore the ethical approaches in social- science and humanities research. Alternative means would also stem the tide of the homogenization of the social sciences and the humanities and the pauperization of their methodologies brought on today by research-ethics regimes. The Summit is a convocation of some 30 outstanding thinkers from a half-dozen countries who have substantially contributed to debates on these issues and who already have thought and written about viable alternatives. Because supporters of the prevailing formal research- ethics regimes are already given much air-time on official agendas, listservs, and policy conferences, the Summit aims at creating an environment that where thinkers can freely express new ideas. In early August 2012, I shall post the URL of the Summit, offering program and registration details. Dr. Insel will speak about the recent technological progress in neuroscience that is transforming the central dogma of biology by revealing (a) DNA contains many unsuspected forms of variation, (b) RNA has many forms and functions, and (c) human development needs to be understood within a microbial ecosystem. 7th Annual Qualitative Lecture and Workshop September 28th & 29th 2012 St. Thomas University Hosted by STU’s Atlantic Centre for Qualitative Research and Analysis

The 2012 keynote speaker and workshop presenter is Dr. Claudia Malacrida from University of Lethbridge, Lethbridge, Alberta. Dr. Malacrida’s lecture is entitled: Motherhood in the cross-hairs: The social and moral regulation of women's mothering. Her workshop will discuss Minding the Gaps: Feminist Discursive Ethnography. Foreign language Film Conference V: Rights and Representations November 1-4, 2012 University of Alabama at Birmingham The theme of this fifth edition of Foreign Language Film Conference Rights and Representations is not in the vein of Said's "Orientalism." The theme of the conference wants to express the representations of rights within. The fight between the Irish and the English, the Palestinian and the Israeli, the French and the Algerian, are the struggle of two nationalisms. Whereas the conference is interested in the fight within the same country, where two groups share the same culture, the same constitution, the same language, in short where the opponent is not an "other" but the "same," similar to what happened in the USA in the 60s with the struggle for Civil Rights, in Western Europe in the 80s (Red Brigades, etc.), or in South America around the same time, or the massacres perpetuated by the Khmers Rouges in Cambodia in the 70s, or the quasi civil war in Algeria between the army and the FIS in the 90s, or the recent spring time of the peoples. In essence this struggle goes beyond the protection of the voice of minority dear to a Western legal tradition; it goes to the core of the democracies. Contact: Serge Bokobza or Rosemary Peters

The Journal of New Brunswick Studies/Revue d’études sur le Nouveau-Brunswick invites submissions from the scholarly community for our next issue, and for all subsequent issues. Articles based on original research from all disciplinary backgrounds are welcome. Articles must either focus on New Brunswick, or consider New Brunswick in a comparative framework, with New Brunswick as the main focus of the comparison. The deadline for the next issue is 15 March 2013. This is a call for scholarly articles, creative fiction and non-fiction, essays, poems and book reviews that explore this theme of 'Performing Lives'. We invite work that engages with the idea of performance both in a literal, embodied sense - for example in the theatre, in performance art, in reality TV, and on film - but also in a more metaphorical, literary sense such as in memoir, autobiography, biography, and multimodal forms such as online and graphic lives. For creative writing submissions, we particularly welcome polished pieces that address these questions in forms including creative non-fiction, prose fiction and poetry (for further guidelines, refer to “What we're looking for”.

UNB Library Services

A notification system has been developed through the Libraries whereby individual faculty members can register for a "New Purchases Notification Service." Please use the same user name and password that you use to log-in to Novell for this service. Once you have logged in to the service, you may click on those subjects areas (Such as "Criminology monographs" or "History monographs"), that you wish to track. Every two weeks you will receive an e-mail listing all the new books that have arrived at the library for the subject areas that you have selected. You may also track the books that departments have ordered.

NBSPRN has agreed to cover the 2012-2013 fee for access to the Statistics Canada service on the 4th floor of the Harriet Irving Library at UNB for St. Thomas researchers. This site is a valuable resource for

STU faculty. It contains vast amounts of unaggregated data in a variety of fields. It is well worth a visit, even if your needs for statistics are cursory. Contact their director XX for more information.
