Dear Parents/Carers,

This week has started out very busily with every class

in the school relocating. We now have the four junior

classrooms in the new buildings and the 3/4 and 5/6

classes in the old P/1 rooms. A huge thank you to the

parents who have helped out, to the staff for their

flexibility and the students for their efforts. It is great

to see everyone working together.

Once everything is unpacked the old rural building is

being demolished and asphalt will be laid. This will

give us another area for the students to play in. Dur-

ing the next holidays a deck is being constructed be-

tween the two new buildings. This will be covered in

and have lock up door either end. We are going to be

very pleased with the end result ensuring better facili-

ties for our students.

Enjoy your week

Walk-a-Thon – Friday, 7th May

The school will be conducting a Walk-a-thon on

Friday, 7th May. This activity coincides with Na-

tional Walk to School Day. This activity is a family

fun day and also a fundraiser to buy new tables and

chairs for our new rooms (our target is approx

$2600). We encourage parents, siblings and rela-

tives to join us at school at 11:30am on the day,

when we will walk along the bike track to the

White Hills Botanical Gardens. Upon arrival at the

gardens we will have a sausage sizzle lunch and

take part in games such as sack races, three-legged

races, etc organised by Mrs

Brunswick’s grade. We will leave the gardens at

2pm to walk back to school.

(A Sausage lunch order form is at the end of this

newsletter.)

Your child can help with our fundraising effort by

seeking donations for the Walk-a-thon. Forms can

be obtained from the office.

There will be prizes awarded to the highest fund-

raiser for each grade level.

Communicating effectively

with your children

Why not try some of the following ideas to improve the way you talk with your children. Sit shoulder to shoulder or walk with your child as you talk.

Talking face to face can be quite confrontational,

particularly for boys. Sitting or walking side by side will encourage both you and your child to talk freely.

Use open-ended questions.

It is easy to ask your child if they had a good day

or if they would like toast for breakfast; however these questions only require a yes or no answer. Try asking questions such as “What did you do to-day?” or “What would you like for breakfast?”. These types of questions encourage discussion between you and your child.

Talk with your children about what to do rather than what not to do.

It is common for us to focus on poor behaviour,

such as “don’t step in that puddle” or “stop swinging on your chair”.

Using positive language allows you to tell your

children what you would like them to do rather than what you don’t want them to do. Try rewording negative statements to positive state-ments such as “step over the puddle” or “please put the chair legs on the floor”.

In June-July 2010, students, aged 15 – 18 years, from over 15 countries will be arriving in Australia to study at local schools for 3, 5 or 10 months. Oppor-tunities exist to act as a host family in a volunteer/unpaid capacity. Hosting can be on a temporary, short or long term basis. Host families help provide our students with the chance to study and experience life in Australia. This is a great way to learn about another country and culture, establish a lifelong link to a family in an-other country and contribute to international goodwill. If your family can offer a friendly, supportive and car-ing home environment, contact us today.
