Hexamatic - the fully automaticand compact preparation system

    The new Hexamatic oers extreme

    versatility, with specimen holders or

xed specimens as well as specimen

    mover plates or individual specimen

    preparation.

    The automatic preparation o Hexa-

matic makes it ideal or high volume

preparation o similar materials. Witha possible nine preparation steps, the

total automation is also perect or the

    preparation o a range o materials that

    require dierent preparation methods.

Thus, Hexamatic is the premier choiceeither i you need automated prepara-

tion o many dierent materials or high

Scentis VI introduces strong new eatures such as:

    Combining Images

Image tiling - align and stitch images together on a single canvas or panoramic-like

views or or linking together multiple images taken in a sequence.

    Extended Depth of Field (EDF)

This eature allows you to derive a single image rom a series o images that are

ocused on dierent depths along the Z-plane.

    Calibration scale bar

Let Scentis add a calibration scale bar and time/date stamp automatically each time

    you capture an image.

    Manual measurement

Excellent new productivity-enhancing eatures or manual measurement which you

can combine with Scentis auto snap eature to make measuring an easy job.

Scentis VIThe new generation o our image inormatics sotware, Scentis (Struers Central Inormation System), is called

Scentis VI and has been completely redesigned with a strong emphasis on user-riendliness.

Non-Destructive Preparation: New MicroscopesStruers complete range o portable equipment or non-destructive preparation has been urther strengthened with two new

high perormance products: the battery-powered, portable microscopes PSM-5 and PSM-10. For these microscopes, accessories

such as a camera and camera connection kit, additional lenses, magnetic crosstable, measuring eyepiece, plate micrometer and a

tripod base or curved suraces are also available.

A complete range of non-destructive preparation

    equipment

Many applications demand a materialographic preparation and

examination without damaging the subject o inspection.

Struers manuactures a complete range o highly reliable,

battery-powered portable equipment and consumables or

    materialographic non-destructive preparation: rom grind-

ing through mechanical and electrolytic polishing/etching to

microscopes and accessories. These tools are supplemented

by replication products or in-the-lab testing.

    New microscopes

Our new microscopes, PSM-5 and PSM-10, are speciallycrated or eld use and are ideal or examination o prepared

suraces provided either by our electrolytic polishing and

etching machine MoviPol-5 or by our grinding and polishing

    machine TransPol-5.

The PSM-5 provides up to 400x magnication and the PSM-10

    provides up to 600x magnication.

DiaDuo-2DiaDuo-2 makes it easier to prepare materialographic specimens. The diamond suspension and the necessary amount o cooling

lubricant are combined into one product. You will thereore always apply the correct amount o diamonds, ensuring cost-eective-

ness in many routine materialographic preparations.

    DiaDuo-2 has the following features:

    Two-in-one suspension with lubricant

    Water-based - no solvents

    Contains monocrystalline diamonds or routine

    examinations

Stable ormulation that does not settle

    Easy to clean ater preparation

    Colour-coded

Can be used in automatic dosing systems and in

    drip lubricators

Alternative use of a Struers product

    Introduction

Copenhagen Recycling Centre has initiated a

project to assess the risk o pollutants being

leached rom soil and waste. Leaching rom

dierent types o soil and waste is moni-

    tored using large-scale, zero-tension eld

lysimeters. The leachate rom the lysimeters

is analysed or pollutants such as heavy

metals and a number o hydrocarbons.

    The watertight setup

The lysimeters are designed and constructed

as circular wells with a diameter o 2 m and

    a depth o 1.8 m (Figure 1). The leachate leaves the lysimeter

through a pipe and is led into a container. Here the leachate

runs through a ve-litre glass bottle lled with argon to ensure

inert redox conditions. Ater the leachate has passed the bot tle,

it is collected in a vessel connected to a server which logs the

weight regularly to monitor the amount o water.

As a part o the test setup, a special shel or hanging o the

bottle was developed. A crucial factor is that this system is

    completely watertight.

To this end dierent materials were discussed and tested and

ater some trial and error, a setup using Struers EpoFix as the

primary sealant turned out to be successul.

    The Solution: Struers EpoFix

EpoFix, which is normally used in small amounts to mount

small specimens or materialographic preparation, is or the

purpose o this application used in larger scale to x the lid to

the inside o the PVC block.

ApplicationStruers application knowledge represents a cornerstone in our daily work - wherever it is, inside or outside the

company. We oer a wide range o tools to share our knowledge, rom on-line courses to group courses and seminars.

A PVC block with a suitable hole was placed on a fat plate withdouble adhesive tape between the plate and the PVC block. The

lid was then placed at the centre o the hole and EpoFix was

    poured into the remaining space.

This nal shel system consists o a PVC plastic shel and a

    PVC plastic block (Figure 3).

The xture or the bottle to the PVC block is made by embed-

ding the lid or the bottle in the plastic block. The lid is embed-

ded in a hole in the PVC block where it is placed and epoxy is

    cast around it (Figure 4).

Ater hardening o the epoxy, the PVC block with the integratedbottle lid was ready to be mounted in the experimental setup.

The epoxy provides a watertight and ast xation o the lid to

    the PVC block.
