DECEMBER 1, 2018
“The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him ‘Emmanuel’ which means, ‘God with us’.” (Matt. 1:23)
What is the joy of Christmas? Is it in having the family together? Is it in deco-rating of Christmas tree? Is it in receiving lots of gifts? Or is it because of a holiday from school or work?
The real joy of Christmas is that God will come in Christ to save us. In Christ, the true God was truly present and in Christ, the true God was truly human. No one has ever seen God, but people saw Jesus and thus saw all of God that could be visible in a human form. In Jesus, God showed his character, he got up in our faces and hid nothing.
The Scripture says, “…today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord… (Luke 2:11).
The good news about Jesus is that he comes to all. He comes to anyone with a heart humble enough to accept him.

PASTOR ’S CORNER
When Christ was born, God became a man. He was not part man and part God. Jesus was completely human and com-pletely divine. Jesus is the perfect expression of God in human form. God revealed through his prophets that he would come to us in the person of Emmanuel, so in this way we might know that God is with us.
The Lord promises us that he will be with us to the end of the age. He said, “…do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will up-hold you with my righteous right hand.”
There is a story about a man who heard a noise in the middle of the night. He went downstairs to investigate and found a burglar emptying the silver chest. He said to the man, “Stay where you are. I want to get my wife. She has been expecting you for twenty years.”
Worry cannot be solved if we insist on borrowing the anticipated problems of tomorrow. We insist on worrying today about what may happen in the future. Most of the things we worry about never happen.
Dear friends!
God is with us. He is in control of everything. He came to us through Jesus Christ. He will be with us forever. Emmanuel!
HAVE A PEACEFUL AND BLESSED CHRISTMAS!
Blessings,
Pastor Hyun Joo Yang

ANNOUNCING—NEW WEBSITE
Early in 2018 the Trustees accepted the task of updating the Newark First UMC website. Since the end of June, Nancy Schrader, Marlene Havert, and Pastor Yang have been working with Jesse Sheckler, our consultant for this project, to accomplish this task. After many prayers for guidance and many hours spent with our computers, we are pleased to announce that in mid-November we officially launched our new and improved website.
We have done our best to include information on all of the various activities of our church. However, we know that things can be missed. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you need something to be added, changed or corrected. We will continue to do our best to keep this website up to date, informative, and relevant for our members and the community.
Please visit our new website at NewarkFirstUMC.org, the same web address as before. The more activity we have on this site, the more prominent we will appear when the community searches the web for churches in our surrounding area.
IMPORTANT: The accuracy and relevance of our Website content will take a continuous commitment from all. The committees and groups within our church should insure that they notify Nancy, Marlene, or Pastor Yang of any upcoming events, changes in meeting times, change in leaders, or additions, changes and corrections in content.
We encourage all members to submit items for publishing on the website such as photos and com-ments from recent events, or photos with related quotes for the “Inspirational Images” page found un-der “Faith Formation”. These can be emailed to Nancy Schrader, who is currently serving as the Web-site Coordinator.
Thank you to everyone who provided text, photos, etc., so we could accomplish this task.
Questions may be referred to Nancy Schrader, [email protected], phone 315-573-9273.

We have a great group of young adults. Please keep them in prayer:
Trinity Wells Josh Mercer Ben Talbot Lynzee Havert Jenna Havert Leadership: Lucina Hallagan, Jean Bendix and Kyle Houser
Adult Mentors: Donna Havert, Kyle Houser, Steve Hallagan and Eileen Godfrey
Please add these names to your prayer list – cover them with the Holy Spirit through your prayers on a daily basis. It is hard to believe that as you are reading this our confirmation classes will be finished. Confirmation Sunday is December 2 at the 10:00 am service. What a joy it has been to journey with these five young adults. Together we have:
Read the Gospel of Mark together
Studied the creeds that are part of our faith tradition
Examined what we believe and written our own statement of faith, or creed.
Eaten a lot of M&M’s
Learned about the sacraments of the United Methodist Church: Baptism and Communion.
Talked about the foundation of United Methodist beliefs as taught by John Wesley
Grown together in our faith and love of God.
As part of the confirmation service the congregation makes a promise to the confirmands: With God’s help we will proclaim the good news and live according to the example of
Christ. We will surround Trinity, Ben, Lynzee, Jenna and Josh with a community of love and
forgiveness, that they may grow in their trust of God, and be found faithful in their service to others.
We will pray for them, that they may be true disciples who walk in the way that leads to life.
Please consider writing a brief note of welcome and encouragement to these five amazing youth. Through them the Hope of the world will continue to do his work of love and peace.

Red Bird Reflections by Rod & Janie Reeder:
Our trip to Red Bird Mission was an experiment. We have done 60 some NOMADS projects that all involve working with seniors for a three weeks period of time. While we did take our camper to Red Bird and stayed in it rather than in the dorms we worked for two days, had a day off and worked for two more days and the project was over. On NOMADS projects we work four days and have three days off to see the area, do laundry and recuperate. The Wednesday off in the middle of the project was interesting.
The beauty of this mission trip was the experience of working and “teaching” and watching the young folks. Their hearts were absolutely in the project and they were willing to do whatever needed to be done with no complaints. They learned quickly and were enthusiastic about applying what they learned. We heard very few complaints about being bored or tired. This considering the fact that it was hot and the humidity was high and it rained a bunch.
All in all, it was a rewarding experience in which we got to work with and get better acquainted with sev-eral of our church members and youth. A huge thank you to Carolyn Leach for being our team leader and coordinator, she did a wonderful job of herding us in the same general direction.
